Older but interesting article on adult figure skating

One of my favorite figure skating memories -- as a spectator! -- was one time I had an opportunity to attend the U.S. Adult Championships, held in Ann Arbor that year. Of course these were the cream of the crop, including some former upper level competitive skaters, but I was blown away both with the skills put on display at this basically recreational event, and especially with the originality and effort put into program composition.

One impression I came away with was that the men were all serious and artistic, while the ladies excelled at fun and flirty. I later found out that this was because the two sessions that I happened to attend were the men's serious and artistic category and the ladies' fun and flirty competition. :)

I was a competitor there - sadly I was ill and hurt that year.

I'm not sure exactly what the categories were called in 2009, but "fun and flirty" was definitely not the official name or a requirement
Maybe it was "light entertainment" at that time?

More recently, Showcase categories have been separated into Emotional Performance, Choreographic Artistry (for higher skill levels only), and Lyrical Pop, Character Performance, and Comedic Impressions. The latter three are often combined in adult competitions even though they have different requirements. Anyway, that's the category fun and flirty programs would fit into.
Showcase events are no longer separated by gender.
