Original Dance

Yessss !
At last, judges are true to themselves and put diplomacy aside  . Big Hooray for them.
The first three teams on the podium in whatever order. They all rule !!!

G/P ahead of the Kerrs is pathetic (and F/S too). :( The Kerrs OD was awesome! But they were undermarked as usual. I'm convinced the judges don't want to let them move up.

It's interesting, Tanith and Ben in 4th - I guess they got their gift at the Olympics and now they're sacrifical lambs for the older teams that are retiring. :P Not like I mind, Tanith and Ben have loads of issues to work out with their skating before they become world champ material.

I stopped following dance some years ago and now treat it like most people treat all of skating - I tune into the olympics and that's it (partly because I'm always convinced that this will be the last time it's included). So, take this with several salt shakers, but the only pair I enjoy watching is the French team. I just so didn't get N/K or B/A or G/G that it wasn't funny. (I also thoroughly enjoyed the Italian drama queen staredown and was hoping they'd start ***** slapping and pulling hair, but felt really guilty about that).

My big problem with dance is I don't understand why they need three sections, especially I don't understand the need for the OD and FD since I can't tell any difference between them. The only part I might get into (ie learn to understand how the hell it's judged) are the CD's but those are almost never broadcast.

The final results will be:

1)Delobel/Schoenfelder
2)Dubreuil/Lauzon
3)Denkova/Stayvinski
4)Belbin/Agosto

Tanith and Belbin were given a bit of a gift with their silver at the Olympics where they did not skate their best yet the judges scored them as if they had skated their best. I would not be at all surprised if how they are judged her is a bit of backlash from some of the complaints about that. Their silver in Turin was not nearly as bad or big a gift as the Ukranians bronze but it was a bit of a gift nonetheless. The French will be given gold if they skate their best since the judges realize they were robbed totally in Turin, and will be anxious to give some payback. The Canadians could win gold as well though since they skate last.

I agree with your prediction in the ice dancing Slutskayafan.
I have a feeling that the USA team in all of the discplines
may not even stand on the podium this year. I am keeping
my fingers crossed. As long as the scores are fair (?)
may the best skaters medal.

D/L have the perfect draw. They can absolutely bring the house down with a good skate in front of the home-town crowd. I'm holding my breath. Very exciting.

I've seen a number of comments about B/A suddenly descending the rankings, but I actually felt the judges were prepared to place them lower at the Olympics, but with all the falls and B/A one of the few teams to skate clean through all three phases, they slipped into silver. Just my general feeling about the competition. So I'm not too surprised with where they are now. I certainly am not counting them off the podium yet, though. The scores are tight.

LOL! Agreed.

I'm not abig B/A fan simply because I jsut don't get the fuss about them. They need to work out lots of problems. Most of ice dance now isn't dance. It's just become more pairs-esque with the BTH lifts and stuff. I can only think of a few teams that really DANCE...and um, I can count them on one hand. B/A certainly are not among those who do.

I don't think the CDs were judged very fairly, but that's just me.

awwww Lanie... I don't think Melissa and Denis being 9th is garbage at all... they are amazingly talented athletes and dancers :)

I hope nerves don't get to D&L. Knowing you can win a title has got to be nerve-racking, and they have to wait for everyone else to skate. I really want them to do well.

So do I. I love them and I feel as though they were always overlooked all through their competitive years. I feel as they are one of the few dance teams these days that actually DANCE.

I agree, I think the top 3 teams at the moment and D/V are the few who can blend difficult technical ability into a story and a dance. Can't really say that about N/K or G/G at all. There's no mystery why those teams can bring down the house and inspire the audience when N/K and G/G never really have.

Well, well, well. What interesting overall results. Say one thing for COP, it's stopped this 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3, 4-4-4, stuff that'd been going on in Dance for entirely too long. Who'd've ever thought even a couple of years ago that the most interesting competitions at the Olys and Worlds, from a standpoint of PURE COMPETITION, would be in Dance??

Go Bulgaria!!

I wouldn't be so optimistic. My point is the notation system was not the root of the problem. Judgment was and still is. Right now, all the pressure is released and the judges are "wild and free" (and B/A are getting backlashed after having been pushed so hard at the Olympics). But the russian factor will be back very soon. Tanith and Benjamin who have benefited of a certain "russian factor" will maybe have to taste the silver for a certain amount of time, when the russians have a "front" couple (maybe as soon as the next season). And maybe, we'll come back to 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3 or more probably to 4-1-1 1-2-2 3-3-3 and the same results at the end of each competition.

But this championship is a nice fresh air after such a boring and frustrating period. In Lyon, the public booed the judges. In this championship, except few weird things, they should be acclaimed. Pure competition is only for this year in Calgary. Let's enjoy the moment because I wouldn't bet on the future.

Great news. I just looked at the start order, 5 dance teams will be in the Final group. D/V will have a chance to challenge for a medal, appropriate since the top 5 are sooo close.

AWESOME for Melissa and Denis! I hope they can hold tight to 9th, or maybe even move up another spot! Their Romeo and Juliet FD is absolutely gorgeous when skated well, so who knows what will happen?

I think you're right.

I'd love to see Denkova and Staviyski win Worlds this year. They've been constantly undermarked throughout their career and they should've won Worlds in 2004.

Why three phases

Ah, it's because of that thang that everyone complains about, where they don't think ice dancing looks like dancing. The Compulsary phase makes all the competitors prove that they can dance, that the basis of their original and free dances is rooted in the hours they spent learning to dance. You can't learn those high level dances and not be influenced.

The basis of the OD is to make all the competitors prove that they can dance to a particular style of music. With all the competitors using the same rhythms, it proves that they actually listen and choreograph to the music (unlike some single skaters and pairs skaters who figure out trick, stroke, stroke, trick, stroke, stroke, spin, whatever, big finish.... then edit in music that sort of fits it).

And the free dance allows them to take all the skills they demonstrated in the Compulsary and the OD and show them to their best advantage.

Ice dancing rules.
