Over-Booting - How bad is it really?

Okay...well just wondering because mine don't hurt. They are rated for doubles and triples but I only do singles. So I'm not sure what is bad about them.

I’m talking about major overboot like if you wore my custom boots that are rated for triples and quads. But even at a lower stage you have issues depending on your height, weight etc. overbooting does and has caused issues with people in the past, and permanent damage at that. Feel free to do what you want but if you do overboot and injure yourself it’s on you. Have a good day.

If I could get away with cheaper (less supportive) boots, I would definitely not be using boots with an 85 firmness rating, when I know I am not ever going to do a triple jump. The only reason I get such stiff boots is to accommodate the damage left by a past injury and surgeries. People need to be realistic about their needs and their plans, not just go by what websites say or comparing to what other skaters have. The best suggestions come from a combination of a coach who knows your skating/skating plans, and a highly experienced boot fitter.

I'm torn between getting the Jackson JS1992 Marquis and the Jackson JS1592 Mystique.

The Marquis are listed for:

USFSA Basic 5-8
ISI Beta, Gamma, Delta, Freestyle Test 1,2
Skate Canada Canskate Stages 4,5

The Mystique are listed for:

USFSABasic 1-5
ISIPre-alpha, Alpha
Skate Canada Canskate Stages 1-3
The Marquis is rated stiffness level 10
The Mystique is rated stiffness level 15

This is a very slight difference. Going for the Mystique will not be "over booting". Stiffness ratings go 0-100.

That said, I'm fairly certain the Marquis is only available in black. So if you're female and want to buck the system and get the Marquis then go for it. But if you're female and want to stick with white skates then you really only have the choice of getting the Mystique. And if you're male, well then you get to choose :) Generally they say boys/men need a slightly higher level stiffness because of higher average body weight and also because boys/men tend to jump more and higher. So.... all that, if I were you I would get the Mystique, period.

This. I'd even say the mystique is rather under than overbooting (for adults, of course); my first ever pair of figure skates were mystiques and I, then a complete beginner weighing about 125 lbs, managed to completely break them down in two months. I then got the Risport RF lights with a stiffness of 45 (I think?) and those lasted me for a year or so until I had all my singles except axel. In December I got the RF3 Pro which are rated 65-ish and I think I could even have gotten a stiffer boot. As other posters have said, it's really best to discuss with a coach and/or professional fitter what skate is the best choice for you.

In addition to the excellent advice you’ve already been given here, I would just stress how important it is to have a correct fit in addition to the correct support. It’s very possible to prematurely break down boots that are plenty stiff enough, but because of incorrect fit, pressure is placed on the wrong areas of the boot.
