Plagiarism in Mrazkova/Mrazek's RD

It has come to my attention that the AI-generated portion of Mrazkova/Mrazek's RD, "One Two," has lyrics that are directly plagarized from "You Get What You Give" by the New Radicals. I learned about this via this blog post that was reposted to another site. As much as I dislike the tone used in the blog, there is a legitimate concern here; whichever AI was used for this song clearly copied the lyrics from the New Radicals' song and pasted them in different parts of its new song. You may compare the lyrics used in the first part of the Mrazeks' rhythm dance music (VPN may be required) with the New Radicals' lyrics yourself.

For the record, I really love Mrazkova/Mrazek and want to see them win medals-- but not like this. Not when an actual human hasn't been credited for plagiarized lyrics on an AI-generated song. AI tends to just regurgitate information without providing anything truly new or insightful, and they really should have done their due diligence to ensure that the song's lyrics were unique. This is also disappointing considering that they have gotten in trouble for copyright issues before-- I really hope they change the first part of their rhythm dance as soon as possible.

Now I know some of you on here know a thing or two about music and copyright law, so I would love to hear what you guys have to say about this. AI-generated lyrics that are too similar to what an artist created are something an artist can potentially sue over, correct?

Has anyone reached out directly to Mrazkova/Mrazek team to warn them regarding this instead of posting on blogs or forums or making fan edits naming and shaming them as plagiarists? Because if anyone is concerned, that should be the first thing being done.
...Honestly, that's a good idea, and I hadn't considered trying to find their contact information before. I am someone who is genuinely concerned for them, but I thought that by posting this, maybe, just maybe, they as well as their fans would be more aware of the issues that they could face?

English is not their first language, and those are lyrics from a song by an American band who only released one full album before they disbanded. I'm not sure why the first response from people is glee and desire that they will get sued, instead of warning them.

Nobody wrote if the somebody from Kate & Daniel's team was informed.
So I sent the message with link on this Thread to Matteo Zanni and lady from PR of Czech Figure Skating Federation.

I hope everything will be OK.

I just don't understand why the ISU even allows this. It was AI generated in 2025, 25 years after the 90s ended. "In the style of" should never be permitted if it's not originally done in the particular decade that the ice dance ISU is mandating that year . Just my two cents. That includes covers of songs done in the 90s but that were originally written in a different decade like American Woman written by Canadians (The Guess Who) and released in 1970. The song is clearly from the 1970s. Even though Lenny Kravitz made it famous in the 90s, the vibe, lyrics, context, characteristics, is still from the 70s.

Using genAI for figure skating competitions gives a ridiculously hgh risk of copyright issues.

The ISU should not have allowed it in their guidance. And they have done so explicitly: "Music created via AI in the “Style of the 1990s” is also permitted", which was almost bound to lead to skaters thinking, "that's new and modern, let's try it..."

I think if you're going to use AI music you should probably do a quick Google search of the lyrics first. Could save a lot of future trouble.

The tone of that blog post is really off. They seem to be rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of two young people being sued (or the possible consequences of a lawsuit on the sport/streaming if they use it at the Olympics). I hope the kind people who've tried to contact the team manage to get through.

I wonder if AC/DC was so costly that they didn't have the money for another price of music?

I don't like the ISU's insistence on using expensive/difficult to licence pop music. It's one thing if skaters opt to do that, but expecting it just isn't fair when many skaters are financially squeezed already. And suggesting the use of AI as a way of getting round it (possibly putting skaters at risk of expensive lawsuits) is so irresponsible.

How about using older/classical music for a theme next year? What about a ballet themed rhythm dance, for example? A genre of music? Pieces based around a particular instrument even?

Heh, this is the reason I say no every time a journalist asks me if they can use AI for generating articles. Chances for the LLM to output to be exactly the same as something that was already published are too big and the case would be too hard to defend. And it isn't a secret what I think about ISU legal team, the fact they didn't stop the AI music rule only adds to my bitterness towards them.

I actually recognized the lyrics in real time and assumed watching their program that it was deliberate, as in, there was some kind of deal to be able to use them. It's a pretty distinct song (and much better in the original). I even wondered why they'd use such a horrible version, lol. "Wake up kids, we've got the dreamer's disease"....

Assuming they don't have such a deal, they have a problem to solve pdq. They are scheduled for Skate America. I don't think it's wise to use this again, and since it's rhythm dance, they can't just revert to an old programme.

Thank you for doing it. AI generation is allowed by the rules, so from the POV of the ISU, they are in the right. However, song copyright law is insane, it forbids any quoting verbatim from the text, but there must be some sampling rules since there are a lot of remixes, so it could be simply a matter of going to that other band and getting permission to use the line as a remix/sample.

Isn't that what AI does? You ask it a question and it searches around for groups of words that various human writers have associated with the words in the question. You say, make a song. It makes a song as much like the songs it is fed as possible.

The problem is, it dipped into a song by someone else verbatim which they didn’t ask for. Generative AI is supposed to do things in style of, not copy word for word. In copyright for books, you can only quote the title of a song and the performer, but reuse of any line, let alone a verse is not permitted in the text. There are some different rules around sampling from one artist to another, and hopefully they can solve it through that channel or maybe they can run a reword to the same music, but AI did them a disservice here, clearly plagiarising the exact line from a song they didn't have rights for. Iirc, it is a 4-chrods sequence until the plagiarism called in music al notes, but in text/quote, songs are protected with iron walls.

I hope ISU stops pushing recent decades, because with AI in play, things can get messy. There are plagiarism checkers that you can run any text through to see if it is fully original.

This is much more complicated - strating with simple question was the fact that word are same just a coincidence? Other funny question is was it legal to feed the model with these songs and other materials? Another thing is if a copyright for AI work exists and who should be its holder. AI isn't working like human brain, there is nothing to compare and it is impossible to use the concept of inspiration that will excuse many cases of works being similar. And this is barely touching the problems with AI and law. Ethics are different topic.

What I personally find despicable here is that the ISU is actively promoting the use of AI-generated "music" in skating.

Aside for whatever copyright issue it may cause, it's the principle of the matter, encouraging generative AI to take over any artistic field (not just music but also painting, writing and whatever it may be) is choosing to push over human creativity, craftsmanship and talent for some AI-generated product that exploits the work of actual artists and replaces them.

As with so many other things, in my view, the ISU is the one who is most to blame here. And I must say, I'm even surprised at how they can keep getting yet more and more disappointing, and piling-up misdecisions upon misdecisions :palmf::censored: There sure must be some unknown talent there. Though to be fair, I find it sad as well that skaters and choreographers, who are supposed to be artists themselves, would disregard other artists and choose to work with AI-generated "music" ☹️

Thank you so much. You have no idea how grateful I am that you sent the links to people who can help. 🙏
