Random observations throughout the Olympics

I just got back from my convention a couple of days ago. I won't be able to comment on the men's LP or on any Ice Dance until the Olympics are over and I can watch the DVR. I also missed Olympic Ice during that time.
More random observations so far:
Maybe she's off fighting crime somewhere
Italian Ice has quietly disappeared from Olympic Ice. Personally, I think it was Sylvia Fontana.
Maybe if they put their 2 bronze medals and 2 silver medals together, they can have a shared gold
Irina Slutskaya and Michelle Kwan have long been friendly rivals, so after what happened Thursday, I think they need to call each other up and go out and paint the town red together. They can commiserate on having a matching sets of Olympic medals.
Oh, wait, it's not quite a matching set
Don't forget, Irina does have an Olympic gold medal. It's that substitute she received back in Russia in 2002 because she felt she had actually won. So she's got one up on Michelle in that regard. Erm.....sort of.
Hormone overload
There are an awful lot of good-looking figure skaters. Where's my calendar, dammit? Figure skating should be able to do aything curling can do. (Idleracer, that's for you.)
Will they let her back into the country?
I can see it now: T&M, N&K, Plush and Irina are all in a big room decorated for a royal bash. A banner on one wall declares (in Russian, of course) "Congratulations to Russia on the sweep!" Everyone is staring at Irina with arms folded, and Totmianina says, "You just had to ruin it, didn't you?"
And then Plush sagely tries to calm her down, saying, "Look, if her name had been Tatiana, too, she obviously would have won!"
"Oh, so it's her mother's fault for not giving her the right name?"
And then Irina yells, "Keep my mother out of this!" and things just go downhill from there. Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze quietly walk in and have some cake and punch, ignoring the argument entirely.
The downside of belonging to a powerful country
After Miki's skate, the NBC announcers were saying, "She'll be back." Um....no, she won't. When your country has more outstanding female skaters than it can shake a stick at, they can toss you aside if you fail at the over-the-hill age of 18 and move on to someone else. As the Olympic selection process showed, there's not a lot of forgiveness for Japanese female skaters.

A few things I liked about this year's Olympics
1. That the podium for the Ladies was comprised of women, not teenagers. How many years since we've seen that?
2. The true diversity that comes about through excellence, not quotas. Look at the emergence of the Asian skaters! Since I'm Asian by injection, I couldn't be happier. Figure skating has become a world sport, not just Americans VS the Russians.
3. That there wasn't a Russian sweep. No offense to Irina, but I was getting a little tired of hearing about it.
A few disappointments
1. That neither Irina and Sasha had a good skate. They are both capable of so much more. Not to take anything away from Shizuka, but I always want everyone to skate their best.
2. Marie France and Patrice's unfortuneate crash and withdraw. I believe with everything in me that they had a program that could've shaken up the finish. I hope to see them at Worlds.
3. I'm still mad that there wasn't enough Italian music played at the Opening Ceremony.

I'll comment on the future looking bright point...
A couple of years ago I thought our women's field was so deep we wouldn't know what to do...then suddenly in one year all the "hopefuls" like Nikodina, Kirk, AP, NNN, they were gone. It was dissapointing.

Yeah, I haven't seen any of the ice dance competition yet, but I was really sad to learn that the Somewhere in Time program that I fell in love with wasn't performed. The world who only tunes into skating once every four years will never know what they missed.
In gymnastics, I believe, you can pick up where you left off if you fall off the beam or the bars, but you get a large deduction. I felt the Chinese team should have received a substantial deduction after their fall (maybe they did).......42

In the Olympic Memories on Ice DVD, you can hear him say that very faintly during Robin Cousins' 1980 long program.
For some reason, that statement used to make my family laugh out loud. Every time.
