These performances are wonderful. A skate like Medvedeva's (green costumre) in post 14 above makes me realize how much more figure skating could be with just a little change in emphasis.

Post 141?

makes me realize how much more figure skating could be with just a little change in emphasis.
More artistic, less athletic.

Competitive skating as sport is never going to go in the direction of that program.

There can be other venues for artistic skating. Shows for sure, which is what this thread is about.

Possibly competitions focused on artistic skating where difficult (or any) jumps, difficult spins, difficult step sequences, etc., are either not allowed or not rewarded, so that other qualities can be emphasized.

That would be a big change in emphasis -- it would be a completely different kind of competition. Which might find popularity, although not necessarily among the same fans who are most interested in athletic competition.

When you watch Stepanova skate, you realise how gifted Tatiana Voloshozhar and Evgenia Tarasova are. She has a lovely soft touch Alexandra, but she cannot change gears and her butt is always sticking out. It just looks like Bukin is always doing the heavy lifting. I am hopeful that Zhulin can help with her technique and we'll see some great programs tomorrow. I always thought if you could merge the qualities of S/B and S/K you'd have an impressive team.
