This at least makes me laugh, as a German comedian made fun of it. That kind of Italian songs was very popular in Germany at the time and the sketch became famous.
In the USSR, for certain reasons, only Italians and Germans were allowed to perform for a long time, because there were communists in the government. Therefore, our parents' love for pop music of these countries is inexorable, and we adopted a lot from them.
In general, I liked today's disco, I expected the worst. The best couples held the bar, and we have great robot children to Kraftwerk!

My favs:
Rumak/Goncharov - following a bit of an off season, they're back with a vengeance
Fefelova/Valov - young and spirited - fab performance
Shinkarenko/Mikhailov - this could develop into something real good, costume a bit too vampire than tap dancing
Shcherbakova/Goncharov - very much rounded already
Kolomenskaya/Frolov - can do with a bit more tweaking

I thought it would be much worse, but it turned out to be a nice party, infused with the spirit of the 80s and the coaches' memories of their youth. And I also thought that the 80's were a time of invincible youth, kids are very sensitive to these rhythms and enjoy them (mostly).

Oh, in that case we shall celebrate it in her memory! 💙
Thank you!
It's not just her, my coworkers and I do all our New Year's Eve parties to 80's Italian music. It's something special, light, cheerful. It also brings back memories of my colleagues' youth.

I know and I totally get that. I probably would have been the same.

I didn't like disco stuff and lovey-dovey feelgood Italian songs, I went for the music that criticised Western standards and societies...
However, I liked listening to Gianna Nanini and went to an Alice concert. And yes, Adriano Celentano was already my mum's fav and we grew up liking him too. So, all's not lost.
But as far as Modern Talking is concerned, I wouldn't even begin to tell you what we thought of them...

You just didn't see the generation of 15 year old Russian girls who were insanely fanatical about this band. To get to their concert in St. Petersburg, you had to queue for kilometers. Besides, my ex-boyfriend was a big fan of this band as well, although he liked Sandra better, of course.
I mean, we have a very reverent attitude towards this band in our country. We generally like very weird music from the '80s. You know, we have an event like 80s disco, 90s disco where they invite European stars to sing for their aging fans. Many of these strange bands have fans left only in Russia, they are happy to come and get a warm welcome. These days things have likely changed due to all the well-known facts, but a couple of years ago it was just like that.

Totally agree. 🤗
That's why the music that reflects a generation's spirit makes you always feel invincible and makes you feel exactly what you felt when you heard a particular song for the first time/in a particular situation, not just in the 80s.
I can only speak for myself, but music over the centuries has always shaped youth culture in wonderful ways, influenced social policies and of course still does and always will.

That's fine by me, as it is understandable in the context. However, there are people in Germany to go exactly to the same kind of events. Of course, people have different tastes in music, everywhere.

Don't mind me, I'm just arrogant enough to believe that some music is not as good as others - in the end it's all down to personal taste and your circumstances in life that makes you click with certain music. I just turn into my younger self again when I hear tunes that will never ever appear on my playlist or played at my birthday.

Yeah, that's how it works. We may like or not like music, we may see bad taste, but if it brings us back to our youth, none of that matters. I know exactly what you mean.

This is the discipline I'm looking forward to the most for test skates, can't wait to catch up :D

By the way, do we know yet of anybody using KINO? They were active precisely from 1981-90... 😅

Saw first 8 so far, and I liked Rybakova/Makhnonosov and Grigorieva/Artyushenko. Was also happy to hear the old Italian tunes heh

I don't really see how a dancing pair can dance to songs by the band KINO. However, I watch a lot of regional junior competitions and there is a lot of Russian music. Regional juniors are much freer in their choice of music. If, for example, you can skate to the music of Nautilus Pomipilius, why not KINO?

I suggest waiting for the adult test skates, I suspect there will be Russian music there, and not just from the ice dancers.

Hmm, well (just in case any choreographers are reading this thread looking for ideas), I think something like Aluminium Cucumbers would work well for a cute young team :D

I'm very glad Euro disco was respected for what it is: terribly cheesy kitsch, but super fun and very 80s (at least for me, although I didn't really live through those years it's a big association). 😁
