Samarin gears up for Russian Nationals

Russia’s Alexander Samarin claimed a bronze medal in what was his debut on the senior Grand Prix at Skate Canada International in Regina, and finished fourth in his second event at Internationaux de France in Grenoble. The Muscovite is one of the candidates for the Russian Olympic team.

“We have to polish the second part of the free skating,” coach Sokolovskaya said. “In the first half, we tried quad Lutz-triple toe, quad Lutz and quad toe in Shanghai. Now we are working on the technique in the second half, and obviously we’ll put in maximum work for the second mark, the presentation. If he skates the program without difficult elements, then he shows really a lot of progress (in the presentation).”

Will he be able to up the ante at Russian nats? What are your thoughts?

The two Russian spots (I believe there are two...) will likely go to Kolyada and Voronov. Samarin could supplant Voronov if he skates clean, but Voronov's surprise win at NHK, third place at SA, and entry into the GPF (and add to the fact that this will likely be his last season) are all nudges in favor of Voronov being selected. Now maybe - a very tentative maybe - Samarin could be a surprise selection in the team event. He's just going to have to prove that he can land the quads at Russian Nationals.

I'm a new fan, and i wish him well.

However, he cannot be part of the team event if he is not part of the Russian men's team.

The only time a substitution like that would be allowed in the team event is if a qualifying country was not represented in one of the disciplines.

For example: Japan qualified for the team event. However, they did not qualify a pair for the pairs event. So, they may have a non-qualifying pair skate in the team event only - but that pair may not skate in the pairs event.

Team USA qualified for the team event. One pair also qualified for the pairs event. That pair MUST skate in the team event. There may be no substitutions.

Oh - I've just learned that Japan is likely to have a pair in the pairs event because the NK pair will not be allowed to compete. But you get the idea anyway.

There are indeed two spots and I've got my fingers and toes crossed Sergei can get one! He's awesome and totally deserves in it! Despite my huge love for Plushy, Sergei probably should have been the one to go to Sochi after Maxim Kovtun did so badly at Euros.

i think he might beat Voronov if clean, he have much more difficult layout with 2 4Lz, also 4T and his 4T, 4Lz and 3A are more consistent compared when he was in junior. The only chance Voronov go to Oly if Samarin beat him in nats is if he medal in GPF which is unlikely.

Voronov's SB is almost 18 points higher than Samarin. And he is more consistent. And it's unclear if anyone goes to the Olympics. If they don't go then you can pretend like Samarin won the spot.

Russia will wait until after Europeans to make a choice right? All 3 guys will compete there. I think Samarin has a very good chance of going to the Olympics over Voronov, because he has room for growth, whereas Voronov has hit his ceiling (although he still needs to land the second quad of his program completely clean, that continues to elude him).
