Sasha's Movie -- First Review

There are lots of pictures of Sasha in her skating days, hanging around with the male skaters, pairs or ice dancers, but never with her direct competitors.
She used to hang out with Naomi Nari Nam all the time and I've seen lots of pics of the two of them together. They were competing against each other at the time.

Yeah but they were training partners. And that was before either of them had made it really big on the senior national stage.

What does any of that have to do with it? The original poster said that you never see any pictures of her with direct competitors, and at the time Naomi was her direct competitor.

well, but what I really find laughable is you finding my criticism unwarranted because I'm not an actor, not your rhetorical question if it indeed was one.
I'm with you, I find the whole thing laughable. Glad you agree with me.

Most people would never have seen pictures of her with Naomi because no one knew who she was back then. I know the first time I saw Sasha was when she won silver at Nationals, in 2000. That was also Naomi's second and last Nationals (as a Single), as she suffered a hip injury and had to have surgery.

Sasha had made her mark, but Naomi was gone.

I actually respect Cohen for never sucking up to Michelle. It's disingenuous to pretend to adore the very skater you are trying to beat.

In fact, Hughes is a lot worse than Cohen in this department. She admitted having once admired Michelle and being starstruck to see her, but then taking down all the Michelle Kwan posters in her room afterwards. Geez, that sounded mean. She shouldn't have said that. Somehow, Sarah Hughes always ends up being the master of backhanded compliments. "I used to adooooooore Michelle but I took down her posters cause I've gotten over my admiration for her." Gee, thanks, Sarah!

Sarah said that she took the posters down because her coach and parents told her to do so since Michelle was now her direct competitor.(or something to that effect)

I don't think many skaters hang out with other skaters unless they train together. Sasha seemed to get along with the cast of COI.

DUH, the COI cast members who are female Singles skaters are mostly PROS and they are not her direct competitors in eligible skating. And just because they are in a picture with her doesn't mean she is friends with them.

I do know she is friendly with Johnny Weir and Tanith and Belbin, who are obviously not direct competitors.

Commercial

Just saw the Smuckers commercial she made for Kurt Browning's Gotta Skate. Um, yeah, kind of wooden. And that's basically just reading lines, not really acting. So I can't really see her as the next big thing... but, heck, she might be able to make a living.

Tara, as an OGM winner, was MUCH better known than Sasha, and she's had little success as an actor, after trying since her win in 1998. Tara last acting credit was a guest appearance on "Malcolm in the Middle" a year ago. She had 2 TV guest appearances in 2005 ("What's New, Scooby Doo" and "Still Standing") and two in 2003.

Tara's movie 'roles' seem to have been consigned to the cutting room floor.

Sasha's had some better initial success than Tara, but then Sasha is quite a bit prettier than Tara. But when it comes to acting, they're pretty much on the same level. :ohwell:

I have heard that Tara is doing OK with voice-overs and things. I think Tara's acting career may have been adversely affected by the kind of publicity she got after her win -- not merely stressing her golds (Nat, World as well as OGM) but the youngest ever at all three levels. With all the emphasis on her youth, she would be considered as a "kid" -- and she can't do that any more.

Sasha, at least, has been allowed to grow up -- that she was young-looking enough for a high-schooler in this film won't keep people thinking of her as a kid.

That makes sense. I doubt Dustin Pedroia, American League Rookie of the Year, has Jeter posters up on his wall ;)

It seems even the voiceovers have dried up.

Tara is 25 now and no longer looks like a kid. If you go to this fan website, you will see lots of newer pictures of her, and it looks as if she has had plastic surgery---cheek and chin implants, a brow lift, silicone injections in her lips.

The face recognition is now gone, along with the name recognition.

huh? Those pictures showed her with Jenny Kirk and Fumie Suguri both who were her direct competitors.

Exactly. And wasn't it at Worlds a few years ago that Sasha gave Fumie a pair of tights to wear for her skate, because Fumie had miss placed hers? That doesn't say they were best buds, but I can't see her giving someone tights so that they can skate (compete against her) if she didn't like that person or didn't want to be "friends" with anyone she was competing against. Anyway, this whole debate is silly. Sasha doesn't HAVE to be friends with any of her skating competitors. When she was competing she was there to compete not to be best friends with everyone she skated against.

Actually Fumie gave Sasha her tights at 2002 Olympics. Sasha got a long with her competitors (At least Jenny and Fumie.) and has been friends with other skaters. I do agree the debate is silly.
