I was thinking of something, the score difference between Jeffrey, Brian and Johnny feels quite big. 13.94 between Jeffrey and Brian, 9.38 between Brian and Johnny which makes a total score difference of 23.32 on the podium! For me it feels quite huge, but how common/rare is this?

I did a quick browse on the ISU website:

Plushenko won his gold in the 2006 Olys by 27 points, but Lambiel and Buttle were pretty close with the silver/bronze. Of course, the LP there was a disaster for most fo the contenders.

In 2005 Europeans, Plushenko/Joubert were only a few points apart but Stefan Lindemann was miles behind for the bronze.

Lambiel won 2005 Worlds by 17 points over Buttle, who was about 5.5 points ahead of Evan Lysacek. The 3-6 guys there were only 4 points apart, probably because they all skated badly.

I stopped at that. BTW, in 2005 Worlds there was a qualifying round, so more opportunity for gaps between the skaters.

Thanks Buttercup!
Interesting! 27 points, wow, that's a lot! But Evgeni played on his own back then.

I was surprised at the big gap between Buttle and Joubert this year (in fact, watching on TV, I thought Joubert won).

The closest podium was last year.

2007 Worlds

Joubert 240.85
Takahashi 237.95
Lambiel 233.35

Otherwise, it seems to be a mixed bag.

2006 Worlds

Lambiel 274.22
Joubert 270.83
Lysecek 255.22

2006 Olympics

Plushenko 258.33
Lambiel 231.21
Buttle 227.59

2005 Worlds

Lambiel 262.46
Buttle 245.69
Lysacek 239.29

 That's what happens when one forget about the QR.
I was breaking my brain trying to figure out what Stephane did on 2006 to win with that score especially because I had Brian's 2007 FS in my head.

One of the reasons for a big difference this year was the fact that Jeff was the only one to skate 2 clean solid programs. Johnnie was 2 in the short but 5th in the long. Brian was 6th in the short and 2nd in the long. Kevin who came 3rd in the long was way back in 9th after the short. Even under the old system Jeff would have won by a margin 1.5 to 5.0 and 6.0! The only difference is under the old system Kevin would have ended up in 4th with 7.5 points.
