Skaters Competing in 2 Disciplines at the National (Canadian) Level

Hey everyone,

I'm not sure this kind of thread belongs here, but here I go anyway...

In past years, skaters such as Jessica Dubé & Bryce Davison, and Vanessa Crone & Paul Poirier, have competed in their respective displines of pairs and ice dance, but also as singles.
Bryce withdrew from the challenge last year because of lack of practice time (because Jessica for one wasn't injured), so to not see him on the list thsi year isn't too surprising.
Jessica is not listed in the Quebec Sectionals, not even under the list of skaters who have byes, so does that mean she won't be competing in singles at Nationals?
Amanda Velenosi (from the pair with Mark Fernandez) has withdrawn from the Quebec Sectionals as well, and, given that she was second in juniors last year, I find it surprising that she won't attempt to qualify as a senior, after all these years.
Vanessa and Paul are listed as having withdrawn (V / P) as well. I doubt either would have a bye since they competed last weekend (so about a week ago), and Paul would have to qualify as a senior for the first time, and Vanessa was in the teens placement-wise last year at Nationals, so I doubt she has a bye.

I don't know the policies about qualifying for the Challenge, but I thought that skaters has to get through sectionals in some way (by placing) or another (by bye) to advance. Seeing all these skaters not competing in singles this year has me wondering whether something has been changed -- I thought competition byes only applied to skaters who had a competition in the same discipline at the same time as a qualifying competition.

It does for the most part but if a skater has an international at the same time or a week before/after the qualifying competition ( sectionals , challenge) , that skater would have a competition bye. They have a leeway for a week before/after as an allowance must be made for travel time and changing time zones.

Crone/Poirier were doing Skate Canada ( the week before central Ontario sectionals ) and Trophée Eric Bompard Cachemire ( the week after the sectional). Since Crone/Poirier could still potentially make the GP final in dance, there was no way SC would have them compete their singles so that they would do competitions 3 weeks in a row. It would definitely hamper their preparations for France.

Paul does not have to compete in sectionals in singles anyway due to a JGP bye in singles. He does have to compete at the challenge though unless Crone/Poirier somehow make it to the GP final in dance. At the senior level all skaters who have a JGP assignment get a direct bye to the challenge. Likewise Crone would have to do the challenge in junior ladies. She probably got a competition conflict bye from sectionals.

BTW, Asher Hill will go directly to nationals in junior men since he has the dance JGPF the week after the challenge. He did compete in sectionals in central Ontario finishing 2nd there.

Last year, Jessica Dube had a competition conflict for Quebec sectionals in senior ladies but had to compete at the challenge.

It looks like Velenosi will not compete singles this year. I understand for she had injury problems this summer ( hence not showing up in summer competitions) so I can see why she skipped competing in ladies this year. Most likely that and that her JGP pairs results were disappointing this year considering they made the JGP final in pairs last year.. BTW Velenosi finished 3rd in junior ladies at the last nationals. She is competing pairs at Cup of Russia. She really has no competition conflicts at all.

Ah okay, that clears things up, nadster. I was under the impression that competition conflict byes were only for a same discpline, ie. competing in pairs on the GP ==> not having to do sectionals in pairs a week before or after. It makes perfect sense, though, not to have Paul and Vanessa do 3 competitions in 3 weeks for 2 different disciplines! (though their side-by-side axels were :agree: in their gala program! How many ice-dancers have ever done side-by-side jumps? and their spins are really cool, too. Okay, obsession over!)
