Good Luck to her! Could she just be going to get spots for next year's team? I am thinking perhaps she was talked into going by her federation. How many spots would Russia be likely to get with her or without her? Who would they have to fill them?

She is not on the entry list at the Worlds site so how can she go?

I have great respect for Irina, and I'm sure I will enjoy watching her contribution to the competition if she does compete at worlds. But I also would have prefered that she not attend and just retire for two reasons.... A. I really want to see some new faces on the podium and B. I want her to start touring in heavy rotation on either COI or SOI and I think she deserves a rest and some time with the family before that starts up.

Many posters here were adamant about breaking the rules for Mao. Many posters here were upset that Kwan got a bei because it seemed to break the rules. Now we have another top skater who may be breaking the rules by entering a competition after the deadline.
While I like the idea of Mao skating; of Kwan skating; and yes, I like the idea of Irina skating. Let's see what happens to her entry.

There is difference from Mao. If Mao's federation diddn't back her up, there is no way ISU will initiate the exception for Mao ($peedy said JF had to make request first. He'd like to see Mao competing at Turino - kicking the ball back to JF who has been infavore of age rule each time they voted.). But in this case as long as RF back Irina up, there is exception rule in ISU they can quote.Joesitz said:

Color me skeptical. If I understand the process and facts on the ground correctly (this is by no means a given, please correct me if I'm mistaken) the deadline for submission of team rosters has passed and she wasn't on it., even as 'zapas' (funny word to me, makes the alternate sound like a spare tire).
Piseev may have clout, but I imagine the US federation would have a thing (or three or four) to say about post-deadline team roster changes. IIRC in 98 the withdrawal of a certain OGM after the deadline meant the US had a vacant spot it couldn't fill because the deadline for new submissions had passed. Federations I assume have long memories about this kind of thing.
On the other hand, if it can be done within the rules (as opposed to backroom deals and hissy fits), then why not? I'm less a fan of her COP skating than of her 6.0 skating but she's a great (and defending) champion and loves to compete. I'm not sure about what kind monetary rewards and/or needs are involved but her presence will make the championships more interesting.
And I completely agree that her going is not by itself going to keep new faces off the podium, those new faces who want medals will just have to try that much harder.

I don't think Irina will win at worlds. She lost the momentum at GPF and the bronze at Olympics will definitely impact her marks. It could be almost like Michelle in 2002 (bronze at Oly; silver at worlds, and let someone else win her first world title). I am surprised that she wants to compete. Good luck to her.

Maybe she doesn't want to leave the skating world with her final skate not up to par. Maybe she just wants to make a statement - she had a bad skate but can and has done better all season.
Irena has been beaten before so if someone can step up to the plate and beat her again, then good for them but I don't blame Irena for giving it one last shot. What other Russian can take her place no matter how badly she skates.

Well, if she skates great she will win. This is not fourth Gold from Russian, most likely the only gold from Russian at this worlds. If she skates great there is no political reason from panel to keep her off the gold. Heck, if she really out skates the rest of the field, even this is the 4th medals from Russian, there is no politics can keep her off the gold. Politics, cultural influence, nationality in play only when the competetion is relative close.curious said:exactly. I think Irina will be mad at herself for her skate at the olympics and come to worlds skating 100% better. I don't think she has had all the media obiligations that some of the other skaters have had and hopefully she has been able to train and get ready. I would not want her to end her career with the skate she had at the olympics.
