State of the U.S. Men's Figure Skating for 2014-15

Jeremy is retooling his technique at almost 30? Let's face it he's not competitive jumpwise compared to the top guys and at his age he's not going to suddenly elevate his jumping. And then of course there is his lack of competitive nerves and being oblivious to when he bombs. I'll never forget last season at SC when he bombed and in the K&C he seemed okay with skating terribly and made excuses for why he skated like he did. Yuka had a look like she was just waiting for the season to be over so Jeremy would retire.

... I hope we can find a recording how his full interview so we can hear his full quote, in context, with vocal inflections.

You are right that Jason is getting more attention, in someways even I would say too much even (there is a clip of Max's skate at worlds where the commentators are talking about Jason not being there for instance. . . I found that unnecessary) so i sorta wish that the skaters would not play into the same game. Jason did not need to be mentioned. If his point is about giving others attention over himself. . . don't bloody give them attention himself! If he feels he is deserving of the attention. . . than give himself the attention.

IceNetwork usually does eventually post audio of the media calls, so I think we probably will have the opportunity to listen with our own ears. :)

If so, we'll have a chance also to hear the context of the quote. It's possible that a reporter asked Jeremy a question about competing against Jason at Skate America. OTOH, possible that Jeremy himself was the first to bring up Jason's name.

What I remember about Jeremy's early years was all the silly faces and inane things he did in the Kiss & Cry. Apparently a coach finally put a stop to that but it left me feeling he was childish and not fully invested in his skating. Thankfully he's matured! I don't particularly find him a good interview....and I think many in the public have not warmed up to him as a result. Between that and his up and down inconsistent performances, he just has never created the excitement that some of the other men have. Yes Jason is getting a lot of attention but let's be honest - his Riverdance did more for the sport than anything probably since Michelle Kwan. People who are not diehard fans knew about it, searched for it on YouTube, were talking about it. And he has an infectious personality!!! I don't think he's getting too much attention...........BUT..............if he doesn't have a good season that attention will go to someone else!

And thank you for pointing out the obvious that so many of us can so easily forget.

Seriously thank you, I agree with you, this was not intended with sarcasm.

It seems to me Jeremy is always trying to stay positive and to psych himself up. Sometimes he tries too hard, with misplaced attention. In this case, he talks about his personal experiences which gives me a glimpse of his mindset but I don't get the feeling he is disparaging anyone. That Evan, Johnny, and now Jason all receive a lot more attention than he does is a fact. He is motivating himself to win the SA. I hope he does well on the ice there.

Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy. Do you know what response you are inviting?

This is what I do not understand. Jeremy wants respect, and indeed, has earned national titles and placed highly at worlds.

But skating alone does not earn respect. And what he says ... I would like to hear the context of why he mentioned Jason, but all you ever hear out of Jason (particularly at international comps) is how I want to skate my best for the U S of A. Jeremy just can't mean this the way it sounded, can he?

I don't see what's wrong with skating for oneself. It is a great way to focus and get the best result, which is then good for all those who support them and those they represent. Skating is a very solitary affair, with all the training and especially on competition ice. It will certainly not do any skater any good to put too much on themselves or to hear what everybody has to say.

And the he bounced back at worlds an it's mainly thanks to him that US got three spot back since Aaron under-performed (I would say that that was his worst competition of the year) and was quite helped by the weak field to hang on to that 8th place

Max's only fault at Worlds was that he tried too hard. And did you see his reaction? He was furious - with himself. He wouldn't accept any praise of his skate, he won't even accept any congratulations over the three spots. No excuses. No flippant comments. He knew exactly who was to blame for his position at Worlds.

And certainly no, "it's a positive step, it's just a warmup!" or middle-fingers to fans.

Jeremy never did middle finger fans-or even reporters. He said he wanted to do that in a specific circumstance.(and he asked permission first) Again- Jeremy haters take things out of context to run him down.

He's a terrible interview-and not socially adept-he often seems to repeat things his sports psych has told him- but he has been our best man over the last few years-he has gotten or kept 3 slots for men and he's been our highest male placement at worlds.

Anything we say now doesn't really matter- the season will speak for itself soon enough. The odds are against Jeremy. He's a determined fighter though.

He has won 4 golds at nationals (Johnny, 3; Evan, 2) and competed there 8 times compared to 10 times for Lysacek and 9 times for Weir. Abbott, I believe, never has finished lower than 4th, while both Evan and Weir have.

Actually very consistent- not that anyone gives him credit for that. He's also medaled on the GP at least once every year (except his first).

And all the guys at this level try their hardest-

I don't see what's wrong with skating for oneself.

Here is what is wrong with Jeremy saying "This season is different from any other because it's 'just for me'". It rubs it in our face that last season, too, was "just for me" -- or at least that was the impression that he gave when he scuttled the chances of his team at the Olympics and then seemed to blow it off with a comment about how flubbing his performance was actually (somehow or other) "good for him" as an individual.

Still, I agree with what you are saying. It is not an awful crime to be maladroit in interviews. Let him skate.

Is there going to be a link to these teleconferences? I'd love to hear what Jeremy (and presumably Jason and Gracie) will say about their programs and their progress ahead of Skate America.

As I said above, usually some lag time elapses before the audio of each skater's media call shows up on icenetwork (on its video ;) page).

Thx, Stitch. :)

And at the Olympics Abbot had a great comeback in the free... I don't like Jeremy as a person, too often he acts like a spoiled child, and even as a skater I found him way too overvalued, still the truth it's that for years he has been the best U.S . had to offer and even last season his results leading up to the Olympics were the best between the US competitor: there were only two skater that had a better grand prix season then him and he bested both of them in nationals, so who should have been sent instead of him? The only skater who' results were as good as Abbott's was Jason and he was sent... the only skater that could have a case in his favor against Jeremy thanks to a stronger season that far was Adam but he performed abysmally at national... why should they've sent Max when the two times the two competed together last season before Olympics Abbot has both times come out on top?

2013 Nationals: Aaron 1st, Abbott 3rd (and he sulked pretty bad about that.)

2013-2014 season

Max: 1st SLC, 3rd SkAm, 7th NHK, 3rd Nationals

Jeremy: 6th SkCan, 3rd NHK, 1st Nationals

Please point out how Jeremy's results were "so much" better than Max's. In fact, they were pretty identical. Except that Max doesn't have a reputation as a total utter headcase.

I WANTED Jeremy to kick the behind of the Olympics and skate really well. I REALLY WANTED THAT. Because then I could be happy that at least Max missed out and it was worth it. But no, he did exactly what I find so frustrating about him and worse, he acted like he didn't care, blamed everyone other than himself, and generally carried on like an immature brat. He was nearly ten whole years older than his teammate and he acted at least ten whole years younger.

While both results are quite mediocre will you admit that before the Olympics Aaron and Abbott competed two times and both times Abbot came out on top? So my point still stands: why should they have passed over the national champion while his competitor had worst results?

And here we're not talking about attitude, because obviously Max is a way more pleasant guy than Abbot, but unfortunately beeing a good guy wasn't a requirement for those two spot...

No. Abbott and Aaron went head to head THREE times (the Abbott fans won't admit it, but they did). It was 2-1, hardly conclusive. Abbott also lost during the season to Brown (Brown's FS score was higher at Nationals) and Farris (who finished 5th at SkCan).

And quite simply, the USFSA should have had the balls to say "No, sorry, we don't trust you." But given the uproar over their correct decision in the ladies', it was impossible they would do it for the men.

I'm talking in the Olympic season because if we count the other season than it's a 3-1 for Abbot (Don't forget 2012 nationals...). But you haven't answered my question: what had Max over Jeremy to be sent to sochi?

Results that were similar. A quad that is consistent. A never-say-die attitude that guaranteed there would be no rolling over and dying from him. No long history of consistently blowing big events.

While results were similar we've just agreed that in direct confrontations Jeremy had an edge, nothing to say about his willfulness, but that's no guarantee of good results, Max has surely a stronger quad but he has much lower pcs, and last point it's not like Max had such a great career: before his impressive 2013 performance he never showed great results nor good promises...

Anyway I think it's best that we stop here since none of us will be able to convince the other... I just wanted to clear a thing: I started this discussion with you because I find ridiculous this protracted bashing of Abbot for how he shouldn't have been sent and how he's such an headcase etc. exactly as last year I found ridiculous the bashing on Max and how he wasn't good enough or how he didn't deserve his spot on the world team...
