I just want 3 spots at this point![]()
I didn't hear either Ashley or Gracie making excuses for their mistakes. Will they be able to right the ship for the free skate? We don't know, but one thing we can be pretty sure of is that if they don't move up, it won't be for lack of trying.

I can't imagine the meltdowns that would occur if the 3 spots comes down to Polina's incorrect flip
I don't think Gracie made any excuses but from what I have been reading she seems to be giving her usual "everything's fine and okay" statements that everyone finds annoying
On the other hand she does seem a bit delusional if the quote attributed to her in the ladies SP thread is true. She said something like she wasn't spooked out about skating after seeing Liza's score because in the past she got close to that mark without a 3A. She must have mistaken 77 for 67 because she never got near 77 in the SP so it was a pretty stupid remark![]()
It would seem odd to me to come down on her for that flip (when she's the only one to actually show up at this competition, at least so far) and ignore the eggs laid by Gold and Wagner, the freaking National Champ.
Whatever...
The difference is Polina is making a conscience choice to do something stupid. The others just made stupid mistakes, not stupid decisions.
Actually, I think she should be kicking herself for not replacing the flip with a loop.
:What does that have to do with anything? It still shouldn't come down to Polina's flip.
It also should not come down to one person either, but if we are going to pick one, I picking the one that used poor judgment. She is the one that could have made a different choice that would likely have made a difference. If nerves are going to get Gracie and Ashley, they are just as likely to strike if they did a 3T+3T. Polina knows she gets dinged for her flip, she just refuses to change.
This is why skating needs a Marta Karolyi. She would tell Polina to change the jump and, if Polina knew what was good for her, she would. Marta doesn't mess around.
Well that makes no sense. If either Gracie or Ashley had skated up to their ability it would not have matter if Polina did the loop because they would have leap-frogged over her and nothing less than a 3A would have gotten her in that final group. So no, the others don't get a pass because of nerves.
I want to laugh and cry when I think about this, but I remember Sasha Cohen being criticized roundly long ago for failing to deliver cleanly. As someone who roots for the US to do well, what I wouldn't give to have someone like Sasha nowadays.
