Canadian world figure skating champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps will not compete in the Olympic team event in Italy due to a training injury sustained by Stellato-Dudek in Quebec, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Monday. The COC stated that Stellato-Dudek's condition will be monitored daily to determine whether she can compete in the individual pairs event with Deschamps.

If reports are true that she and Max are still in Canada, then this must be a pretty serious injury.

I'm mentally steeling myself for the worst news, while hoping for the very best.
On the other hand, if it's a back or leg joint injury, sitting in a plane for hours could make it worse. Better to let inflammation or whatever die down with some therapy and then fly to Italy later. (No knowledge, just seeing one possible scenario.)

And they wouldn't have travelled before yesterday anyway.

Reports are that Deanna was injured in practice Friday, just a few days before they were supposed to fly out, and is currently off the ice. Max is doing on-ice training by himself. They will decide by the 9th/10th of February if they will be able to compete in the individual event. Lauren/Ethier are ready to go as backups if needed. It must be really serious to keep Deanna off the ice, she is such a fighter and so determined.

Here's an article from Radio Canada, they talked to Slipchuk. From what I understand they hope things will develop fast enough for them to compete, and that they gave Deanna and Max a few days off to come to terms with the situation, so that might partly explain why she hasn't been on the ice.

Skate Canada’s medical team will make that call.

I'm worried that she fell on her head doing the back flip and has a concussion or something. I keep thinking if it was a leg injury or dislocated shoulder they would have said that. But keeping it vague and saying training "accident" does not sound good.

If they don't make it for the individual, I hope they give Kelly and Loucas time to get there, acclimatize and train properly .

Skate Canada’s medical team will make that call.
On my local TV news, the correspondent emphasized that "it will not be the athletes' decision", that it would be a decision by a doctor or doctors. So in spite of Deanna's well-known drive and determination, she won't be allowed to insist on skating against medical advice.

I totally get it. But I also suspect there's a bit of Lindsay Vonn mindset going on, too.

Lindsay is planning to ski on an injured ACL. And, dang, that's dangerous, but I think she realizes it's her last chance at the Olympics. I don't know if the US Ski Team has the gumption/ability to pull her against her will. Similarly, I don't think if there is ANY possible way, even if against doctors' recommendations, Deanna feels like she can do it, they'll be able to stop her.

If it's a case of life-threatening or severe permanent injury, then sure, I'm on the docs' side. If it's a case of something like "you could be out for the season" or even "this could end your competitive career" then in a case like Deanna, I think it should be HER call. I've said it before. Father Time is undefeated. This is, whether anyone is ready to admit it or not, almost certainly Deanna's only shot at being an Olympian.

it totally depends on the kind of injury. there are protocols in place about returning to the ice after some injuries.

I don't think Vonn will end up completing her downhill race. A torn ACL, at the speed they go, I think she will be out after the warm-up downhill. It will be too much for the knee and she will know it when she's on the hill. Just my opinion of course. She said she's been on her skis already but yeah... I am doubtful.

Some details : Deanna and Max : there was a talk that they may skip the team event or at least only do one of the programs already. So Lia and Trennt were already tuned in.

In any case, pairs are on Feb 15. Skate Canada will make the decision around the 9-11. So there is a bit of time.

It is sad and concerning that Deanna is injured (and Lindsay too) comparing the two despite both eing over 40 is hard. Their injuries are different and their events are different with different physical needs. A torn ACL sounds horrible but depending on what is required people have competed with torn ACL - I doubt you could do it in skating due to the need for flexibility and ability to take a pounding jumping and landing. I really feel for Canada. it seems things are stancked against them. Deanna and Max have an illness filled year. The dream of olympic gold seems all but lost even before the ijury/accident. Likewise the bronze seems slipping away each moment. But you hoped this resilient, hard orking and tough lady would at least get to skate in the Olympics. I hope no matter what happens we see her at worlds. Trennt and lia are lovely people and they have taken advantage of Deanna and Mx's health issues (Deanna very sick at nats) and good for them. Objectively they have struggled and never reached what many thought was a higher potential. In 2022 it looked like the trajectory was up and good for this Canadian squad. But they have regressed a bit to the point that they did poorly enough for Canada to lose a spot (2) now instead of 3. I do feel for Canada in general. Truth is Trennt and Lia aren't as strong and there slim medal hope in team seems to be gone now. With Deanna and Max injured an individual medal seems further away. Then there is the sad story fo Piper and paul. I like and respect that aren't using the gay card or the cancer card. But this team tends to be the bridesmaid team (2nd or 4th) . they really have skated well enough to be third from what we have seen but the judges have "dumped" them it seems unfairly for Fear and gibson and the italians are getting a lot of traction with Europenas doing so well (helped by the brits slipping up)) and of course the olympics are in Italy. Canada is most likely coming home medalless in skating. but I hope they can have a few moments even if it is Deanna skating in her 100,000 us dress in the individual event.

I would think that downhill skiing is the last sport I would like to compete with a torn ACL. Of course, skating is also out of the question but I doubt the nature of Deanna's injury is a torn anything...

I didn't have Max and Deanna as medal winners in pairs nor Canada as a medal winner of the team event. I don't think the injury will change the medal table for Canada but it certainly is heartbreaking considering Deanna and Max's story.

Like many pairs teams, they are struggling with consistency. At the same time, to me, it's normal. Lia was skating singles until a few years ago. I think their progress is admirable. I think they are really aiming to be relevant for medals in the next cycle. So for me, this is amazing progress and experience for them. They too have struggled with illness and injury. I don't know of many athletes able to compete with a shingles flare-up. Trennt did just that in Finlandia. I know people have been bed-ridden for days with shingles, if not weeks.
But they have regressed a bit to the point that they did poorly enough for Canada to lose a spot (2) now instead of 3.
Bad luck happens. Korea only has two spots in women... and even then, their team doesn't have their most recent world medalist... injuries.. bad luck.. it's just sport.

We will see what happens with Piper and Paul. I remain hopeful.

I do feel for Deanna and Max and they were very classy at Canadian Nationals when they lost their championship to Lia and Trennt. However, I think Lia and Trennt's showing at Nationals was strong and shows improvement. Trennt is a powerful lifter and Lia has a lovely, engaging presence on the ice and both have lovely musicality with wonderful transitions. Their Gladiator LP was terrific. If Lia and Trennt can control their jumps and land their throws, I think they definitely have top 8 possibilities-maybe not podium considering the Germans, Japanese and Georgians- but not far behind.
