The First Skate | Jul 5, 2025

More than 200,000 archive streaming tickets were bought within the first 24 hours (and counting of course) !!!! :rock: :rock: :rock: :clap: :clap: :clap:

And that's for an 1-hour long show celebrating the opening of a local rink, with only 4 pro skaters participating, performing 1 individual program each, plus a group of local amateurs in group numbers, partly with the pros.
And remember - this is a paid stream!
Amazing!!!!
:clap::clap::clap::clap:
I bought my ticket, it was so so easy which given my unabashed Luddite tendencies is a plus :)

Apparently there is an online challenge to post your country's flag under the Sendai City announcement of the streaming with the simple message that you bought the ticket so that they know from how many countries people are buying and watching :)
There is also a poster who volunteered to bring together all the flags/countries when the purchase period is over. :rock:

Country count update:
24 countries counted already, and there are several days still to go. Plus Japan, of course!! :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap:
And plus Australia, not in yet while we all know that TallyT.... :)
I wonder, though, how many represented countries will not make it to the list as surely not everyone of those hundreds of thousands will go to check and / or post....

I watched it :laugh3: :love: :laugh3: (no VPN needed to watch) and it was simple and lovely, woth all the skaters, even the local kiddies, getting time and attention, obviously Yuzu (and Akiko) were the biggest names and they were all obviously happy and having fun.

(and Yuzu did an encore of LMEY in his delicate Haru yo koi costume, I have a total weakness for when he rocks out with a power piece in one if his ethereal outfits... don't know why but I do.

No VPN needed indeed (I think a VPN is necessary to register, but not to watch), as in fact the provider had announced.
I believe that we're not alone with this weakness for Yuzuru Hanyu's rock encores with a "sweet" costume, given the success of fan videos showing them!
Here's the 2020 All-Japan National Championship Gala (Medallists on Ice), with Haru yo! Koi, followed with a Let Me Entertain You Encore (the same program as in The First Skate, but I find that his interpretation of Haru yo! Koi has changed since he's becoming Professional):

Edit: This fan has translated the lyrics of the part of the Finale when Yuzuru Hanyu was skating:

I watched yesterday, too, and not just once, it is such a happy stream! Yuzuru was a highlight of the show, of course, and you can hear for yourself what some Kenshi Yonezu fan attending their first ice show out of curiosity summarized as: "the atmosphere was warm and happy from the very start but with Hanyu appearance on the ice it became truly electric, resembling a rock concert!' (quoting from memory) :love2:
Having said that, I loved the whole show! Akiko was gentle and beautiful as always, a most elegant and serene skater she is. Rika was youthful and energetic, and I loooved Riverdance by Takeshi Honda, with Russian splits, steps and spins all truly impressive, especially at his noble age of 40+. He was great! It made me acutely aware of what men's figure skating was just a while ago, and what it seems to be missing these days, with full attention for jumps only. It is also kind of sad for, unlike the giants of the past, the current champions may have literally nothing to show for it when age finally takes their quads away.
Still, I was very very happy for the talented and passionate juniors and amateurs from Ice Rink Sendai. It was literally palpable that it was such a thrill for them to share the ice with those legends, and in front of their families and friends, to make it even more exciting! They also got an unprecedented exposure with the stream and its global popularity - with hundreds of thousands of tickets sold, they may claim now to have had a bigger audience than many of "proper" shows and competitions :rock:

BTW, the country count update has the number of countries that viewers bought stream tickets from pushed up to 40+ by now.
The stream can be bought to August 14, you just need to remember to set up an account with the provider before your purchase (you can just sign up with your Google account, which makes it very easy), for which you need a VPN, and then you need to be logged in to this account to watch (again, Google account will do the trick for you), but no VPN needed anymore. International cards work alright.

Overall, a very happy and warm show, with friendly and almost family-like atmosphere, and everyone visibly performing happy and in great moods!
Like everyone before me, I loved both HYK as the main dish, and the rock hit LMEY performed as an encore in the ethereal pink HYK costume :jump:

The First Skate will be visible on Zaiko for a pay, from August 8th to 14th, tickets being for sale from August 2d:

A good news for international fans of the skaters (or supporters of the rink) is that the process to buy the tickets and watch the show seems rather straightforward; and the 3% fee (plus exchange rate depending on the banks) on payments with international cards seem very reasonable, particularly on a 1000¥ ticket price. This poster advises not to forget to test the compatibility and shows how in their tutorial:

I would like to add something regarding the ticket price. There are handling fees, streaming fees, and another fee (for payment), so the total is 1384¥. To this, must be added the international bank card charge for those paying with an international bank card, and the exchange rates depending on the mode of payment. This is still very reasonable in my opinion, but I think it had to be said, and to some it can make an important difference. I hope that given these fees, the whole 1,000¥ bare ticket goes entirely to the organisers of the event!

The viewing period is ending on August 14, at 23:59 JST which is today in Japan!
Just a friendly reminder for those who still want to watch / rewatch it as it might be the last chance to see it!

Oh wonderful!! :laugh3: :rock: :laugh3: :hap10::laugh3:

It seems The First Skate was in fact the last time to see Yuzuru live until next year. He just made an announcement today he's taking time off - well deserved and much needed - until Spring.
