With all due respect, these championships were marred by two things (not even getting into the fire-sale 6.0's, dubious time charges or placements).

1. The camera work sucked. As in terrible. As in distracting and annoying and leading me into blind rage.

First rule of figure skating camera work (show us the feet!) Second rule of figure skating (show us the rest of the skater) like Fred Astaire dancing, the optimal shot is the whole person. Too often in spins, they cut into strange semi-close-ups that a) made it hard to judge the positions b) made it impossible to judge how well the spin was centered. I'm all for close-ups of skates in instant replay, but not during the skate itself.

Also, at times they would reduced the size of the skater performing to show us some meaningless backstage picture. If they want to show Arakawa watching Kwan's skate, fine, do it after Kwan has finished, and not in the middle of her footwork sequence.

2. I'm beginning to think that German sporting security is an oxymoron. It was pure _luck_ that the Canadian freak who was able to sabotage security and have nothing at all between him and Kwan was a spyware wh*re and not a deranged terrorist or maniac intent on hurting Kwan, pure luck. I think female atheltes should start a boycott of events in Germany until German officials start taking their obligations to keep them safe seriously.

I wanted to like these championships but I'm having a hard time.

I'm sorry that you were one of the lucky ones who got coverage on a daily basis.

Yes while watching the skating coverage on TV, I have to agree in saying that some of the angles/shots were done at the wrong times. Definitly different but I am at least glad that we did recieved the coverage we did throughout the week.

The weird camera angles and shrinking of the picture were driving me mad too. Especially during a spin where the camera would do a closeup of the foot or the arm, so you can't even see the skater's position!

I found the camera angles horrid on the CBC coverage but surprisingly much better on the ABC/ESPN coverage. I never thought I would say ABC did a better job! So kudos for CBC showing every night coverage and more skaters!

The security was a joke--good thing he was simply an idiot and didn't have any intent to harm. Also it was good that he did this before Michelle and not another skater because she was able to successfully block it out where others would have melted.

The 6.0 fest was absurd--but that has nothing to do with Germany. These were incredibly well skated Worlds all-around, so aside from the oddities I had a thrilling week!

I have watched the whole event live though the week, I hated the camera angels, they also had some really bad sound techs working there. What was up with that, sometimes they cut in some strange music when the skaters skated their programs.

The security was a joke! How did he get the skates pass the security? Shouldn't they know better?

But overall the week was great, except for some poor judging here and there.

Actually CBC did the best job. I watched the coverage every night. It was great. The skaters were shown from head to foot and I enjoyed Barb and Paul and the CBC television crew. Aside, from the "clown" as they dubbed him at CBC - they get a 6.0 from me. Well done CBC!

I enjoyed the CBC coverage a lot. It was much better than CTV would have done. However, the skaters were not always shown from head to toe. We were getting German camera feeds that zoomed in during spins, etc, ruining the look of the spin positions. It was the same way back in Munich during the 1991 Worlds. Obviously German TV crews need to learn how to film figure skating properly.

I agree with Eliza that the 6.0's have absolutely nothing to do with Germany.

I haven't seen any of the World's coverage, because I don't have cable yet.... but I know what you're talking about. German TV only covers European Championships (some of it, at least), Worlds and formerly the Nations Cup. And some of Daniel Weiss' shows that he does like once a year. So they have no way to really learn it, and I know it is abhorrent.

BUT what I have to disagree with is the phrasing here....it is not "Germany" but "the German TV station that is responsible for" whatever it was. It's not Germany as a whole...that sounds kind of weird to me honestly. :(

I must have been watching a different CBC coverage from you - the CBC camera crew was great. They pretty much showed the entire competition - which CTV never has. As for the dance, they did show the OSP and the long programs - of course, the set pattern dances are never covered - it would be like trying to cover the figures discipline in the past. Too many dancers and dances to cover - to little time. I am sure the CBC would cover the entire dance competition if they could. Anyway, I think they did a great job. Thanks CBC!
