Just when I have a good cow story to tell you, you switch your avatar over to Madelyn. Anyway,
Did you read about the steer that busted out of a Detroit slaughterhouse last month and made a dash for freedom? The 1800 pound animal ran around all over downtown for two hours until the animal control people finally were able to bring him down with a tranquilizer gun.
When the story hit the news there was a big hew and cry and a grassroots fundraising effort to save him and give him a nice home on a farm somewhere. But evidently the slaughterpouse owner was so mad at all the damage the steer has caused, breaking down a wall, etc., that he refused to sell. Meanwhile the animal control people wouldn't give the steer back to the slaughterhouse because of public opinion, so this went on for about three weeks. They even had a contest to name him.
Finally the slaughterhouse owner cooled down a little and the fundraisers got up enough money both to buy the animal and to pay for the damages he caused. In was just in the paper a week or so ago that he was now happily grazing away at one of those farms that let children come and see the animals.
