Sonja Henie Trophy Junior Ladies: Results

Varvara finished 8th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 80.78. This meant that she dropped to 7th position overall, with a score of 126.44.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Sonja Henie Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Maria Olszewska Memorial.

Looking at the Protocols, it is not pretty. She had a very rough first three elements; then an issue with one of the elements in the middle; and then a very rough couple of elements near the end.

The Protocols don't rell us what happened with the opening Triple Loop. But it got the third biggest GOE hit, at -1.96; as well as -4 from four Judges; and -2 from Judge 2. Then she didn't have a clear edge and fell on the second element, the Triple Flip. This resulted in the biggest GE hit of the programme, at -2.65; and -5 from all five Judges.

The third element was supposed to be a Triple Loop with annother jump attached onto the end of it. However, she landed it on the quarter and fell. And because she had already done a Triple Loop on its own, it was called as a repeated element. It got the second biggest GOE ht of the programme, at -2.45; and -5 from all five Judges.

The Change Foot Combination Spin that she did next went well. But then she did a Triple Toe-Double Axel-Double Axel in sequence. And the final Double Axel was under-rotated. It got the fourth biggest GOE hit, at -0.98; along with -3 from two Judges; and -2 from three Judges.

The next two elements went well. But then her Choreographic Sequence was invalidated for some reason. And then something went wrong with her Triple Salchow-Double Toe. It got -0.72 in GOE; as well as -2 from three Judges; and -2 from two Judges.

But she finished the programme on a high, with her best element of the programme, the Layback Spin. It got the highest GOE of the programme, at -0.72; and the best Judges marks, with two +1's; and three +2's.

Varvara was fortunate that her programme had the second highest Base Value of the field. Only she and Natasa JERMOLICKA (LAT), who finished 3rd in the FS, had programmes with Base Values higher than 50. And as a result, even though so many things went wrong for Varvara, she still managed to have the fifth highest TES of the entire field. Only the skaters making up the Top 4 had higher TES's than Varvara.

Varvara finished the Free Skate 0.50 points behind 7th position, Adéla VALLOVÁ (CZE), and 5.33 points ahead of 9th position, Sarah JOHANSSON (SWE).

Overall, Varvara finished 1.14 points behind 6th position, Vallová, and 1.56 points ahead of 8th position, Evelina STAVICKYTĖ (LTU). The three of them are the bottom three skaters in a group of 4 skaters covered by 3.25 points, stretching up to Jelizaveta DERECINA (LAT) in 5th position, 1.69 points ahead of Varvara.

It just goes to show how important it is to have a programme with a high Base Value. If you have a good skate, all well and good. If you don't have a good skate, the high Base Value can save you from finishing way down the order. And the latter scenario is what happened with Varvara in Oslo.

Of course, we would prefer for Varvara to have a good skate. And hopefully she will the next time she is in action.

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

Black Sea Ice Cup Junior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Varvara finished 10th out of 25 in the SP, with a score of 44.78.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Black Sea Ice Cup.

Looking at the Protocols, Varvara had a rocky start to her programme. Her opening element was a Triple Salchow-Triple Toe combination, but the Triple Toe was under-rotated and she fell. It got the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.15; and -5 from all five Judges. THis was followed by a Triple Flip that was landed on the quarter. It gor the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.59; as well as -4 from Judge 1; -3 from three Judges; and -2 from Judge 2.

The fourth element, the Double Axel, was the onnly other element that got negative numbers beside it, but there is no indication as to why. It got the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.99; and -3 from all five Judges.

But everything else went well, with GOE ranging from +0.26 for the Step Sequence, to +0.36 for the Layback Spin. All the Judges marks for these four elements ranged from 0 to +2.

Varvara is currently 0.11 points behind 9th position, Krista GEORGIEVA (BUL), and 2.13 points ahead of 11th position, Ana ŠĆEPANOVIĆ (SRB). Varvara is the bottom skater of a group of 8 skaters covered by 4.50 points, stretching up to Lia LYUBENOVA (BUL) in 3rd position.

Although she is currently in 10th, if Varvara has a good Free Skate, she does have a chance of getting onto the podium. Barring something dramatic, the Gold Medal has already been decided. But if things go Varvara's way, the Silver and Bronze Medals could both be within reach.

So, let's hope she does have a good Free Skate, and maximises her chances of moving up.

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

The Junior Ladies FS is due to start tomorrow at 08:30:00 EEST (05:30:00 GMT / 06:30:00 BST / 09:30:00 MSK). So 9 hours from now.

Varvara will be the 16th skater to start. So, first skater to go in Group 4.

The Group 4 Warm-Up is due to start at 10:39:30 EEST (07:39:30 GMT / 08:39:30 BST / 11:39:30 MSK). So 11h 9m from now.

Varvara is due to start at 10:46:00 EEST (07:46:00 GMT / 08:46:00 BST / 11:46:00 MSK). So 11h 16m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Black Sea Ice Cup Junior Ladies: Results

Varvara finished 3rd out of 25 in the FS, with a score of 97.16. This meant that she climbed to 3rd position overall, with a score of 141.94.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Black Sea Ice Cup, as I was watching the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix from Suzuka.

Looking at the Protocols, Varvara had issues with three elements. The first element, the Triple Loop, was landed on the quarter. It got the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.45; as well as -5 from four Judges; and -4 from Judge 2. The second element, the Triple Flip had the wrong edge. It got the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.85; along with -3 from Judge 5; -2 from three Judges; and -1 frpm Judge 2.

The sixth element, the Triple Lutz, was also landed on the quarter. It got the biggest GOE hit of the programme; at -2.95; as well as -5 from four Judges; and -4 from Judge 2. (Yes, those were the exact same Judge marks as the Triple Loop got!)

Everything else went well. The GOE ranged from 0 (for the Triple Salchow-Double Toe; and the Choreographic Step Sequence) to +0.65 (for the Triple Loop-Double Axel-Double Axel done in sequence). Apart from a couple of -1's from Judge 3 (funnily enough, for the two elements that I just mentioned for getting neutral GOE), there were no more negative Judges marks. They all ranged from 0 to +2.

Before I go any further, I should point out something now - Varvara's programme had the highest Base Value of the entire field. And as a result, despite having big negative GOE on three elements and small positive GOE on the remaining elements, she had the second highest TES of the entire field.

Varvara finished the Free Skate 0.02 points behind 2nd position, Leona GEBARA (SWE), and 3.91 points ahead of 4th position, Giulia BARUCCHI (ITA).

Overall, Varvara finished 7.16 points behind 2nd position, Gebara, and 0.39 points ahead of 4th position, Barucchi.

I was watching the Sky's post-race show when the last couple of groups were skating, so I was able to keep an eye on the livescoring page. And I couldn't believe it when Varvara went into the lead by 17.46 points in the FS, and by 19.59 points overall, both over Ana ŠĆEPANOVIĆ (SRB). And as each skater that came after Varvara sloted in behind until we got the the final two.

I've said this about Varvara before, and I will say it again. It just shows how important it can be to have a programme with a high Base Value. The last time I said it, Varvara had had a disaster skate. This time, it was a much better skate. To the extent that she was only a whisker off finishing second in the Free Skate.

The only other skater that had a Free Skate programme with a Base Value in the 50's was the winner, Elina GOIDINA (EST). Her programme's Base Value was 1.36 lower than Varvara's, but she only had issues with one element, and so finished with a much higher TES than Varvara. But that didn't matter, as nobody was gong to catch her anyway after the lead she had from the Short Programme.

The important thing is that, after being in 10th position after the SP, Varvara was able to climb up the order as far as the last step of the podium. She did the most she could do.

And in the process, she achieved a new Absolute Personal Best score for the Free Skate.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

After what Varvara did in Kranevo, I am really looking forward to Nationals. Earlier in the season, I would have said Vasilisa was the odds-on favourite. But now, it is looking like we could have a very exciting battle between the two young Muscovites. I can't wait to find out what happens!

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

I was waiting until Varvara posted about it herself, but Marilena was not the only member of the Cypriot team to be training with the great man.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DLZfVgoIyqz/?img_index=5

(Sorry, I don't know how to embed an Instagram album in a way that something other than the first photo in the album gets displayed).

As I explained in the post in Marilena's thread, their coach, Andrei Lutai, was coached by Mishin.

What an opportunity for a young skater to have!

It's the 12th of the 12th. Which can only mean one thing. It's Varvara's birthday!!!

:cheer: HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY VARVARA!!! :cheer:

I hope you are having an enjoyable day and that the coming year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice.

It is just over two years since I first came across this little blonde haired jumping bean. But, what a journey she has had in the past few years. Before the start of the 2022-23 Season, she had never competed outside of Moscow. But then she started training in Bulgaria and representing Cyprus. And she has been a regular on the international circuit ever since.

Over the two seasons befoee this, she finished in the Top 10, if not the Top 5, in nearly all the competitions she competed in. There were only two comeptitions where she didn't - her second ever international competition, and her Junior GP debut.

She was due to get two Junior GP slots this season, but unfortunately has not competed at all yet (as far as I know, anyway. The Bulgarian Fed has changed their website, and I don't know where to find the results pages for domestic competitions any more). I can only assume that she is injured.

Hopefully we will see her back in action soon. Because I for one miss her.

In the meantime, I hope she has a great birthday.

I think I've just discovered why we haven't seen Varvara so far this season. I think she's switching countries. 😲 She will be back in action today at the Bulgarian Championships, in Sofia. But not as a guest skater like in previous years. She's in the full competition.

The Junior Ladies SP is due to start at 18:50:00 EET (16:50:00 GMT / 19:50:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Varvara will be the 12th skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 3 (and second skater to go after the resurfacing).

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 20:08:00 EET (18:08:00 GMT / 21:08:00 MSK). So 11h 18m from now.

Varvara is due to start at 20:19:30 EET (18:19:30 GMT / 21:19:30 MSK). So 11h 29m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Bulgarian Championships Junior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Varvara finished 1st out of 15 in the SP, with a score of 58.54.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch LIVE, as I was concentrating on the Russian Championships. However, I did pause the livestream and watch back later on.

Here is the sort of comment that I would have written about the Warm-Up for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

Well, it wasn't hard to spot Varvara. All the other girls in the group were a lot taller than her!

Not long into the Warm-Up, she came flying into shot, doing a lovely series of jumps.

A while later, she did another series of jumps. But, we only partially saw it, because of other skaters getting in the way.

Shortly afterwards, she came by close to the camera doing some choreography, and went out of shot. And when she came back into shot about 10 seconds later, she did a beautiful jump.

After coming in and out of shot a few times, she came back in and did a beautiful jump that was just about still in camera shot. After a while, the same thing happened again, but this time the jump was only partially within shot.

It took a while for her to come out of the corner, and when she did she had taken off her jacket to reveal an absolutely gorgeous blue dress.

Shortly afterwards, she came back into shot, but not by much, and started doing a spin. But unfortuantely, she drifted out of shot during it. And then she came back in and did a lovely flying sit spin in the middle of the shot.

Oh, I didn't notice the 1 minute warning, because they then all left the ice.

CaroLiza_fan

And here is the sort of comment that I would have written about her programme for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

Oh, I like this music.

Beautiful combination jump to start the elements,.

Beautiful individual jump, and then beautiful spin,

Beautiful jump then spin.

I don't need to comment on anything more. BEcause everything was beautiful.

Everything about that programme was beautiful.

She goes into the lead.

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols, there is not a single negative number to be seen. The GOE ranged from +0.11 for the second element, the Double Axel, to +1.00 for the opening element, the Tripel Salchow-Tripel Toe. All the Judges marks were in the 0 to +3 range. (It shlould be noted that Judge 5 was consistently giving higher marks than the other Judges).

The total Base Value of the programme, total Technical Elements Score, and total Programme Components Score were all significantly higher for Varvara than they were for anybody else in the field.

Varvara is currently 8.36 points ahead of 2nd position, Milena VELCHEVA (Ice Dance DS), and 8.37 points ahead of 3rd position, Lia LYUBENOVA (Elit).

Velcheva is at the head of a group of 3 skaters covered by 0.99 points, stretching down to Krista GEORGIEVA (Elit) in 4th position, 9.35 points behind Varvara.

Varvara has also completely destroyed her previous Absolute PB for the SP, achieved at this very rink at the 2024 Denkova-Staviski Cup, by 7.80 points! :jaw:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Well, barring disasters, it looks like Varvara is going to be the new Bulgarian Junior Ladies Champion at her first attempt as a full entry rather than as a guest skater. So, she can concentrate on having a good Free Skate to try to achieve new Absolute PB's in the FS and overall as well.

So, let's hope she does just that!

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

The Junior Ladies FS at is due to start at 18:25:00 EET (16:25:00 GMT). So 10 hours from now.

Varvara will be the 15th and final skater to start. So, fifth and final skater to go in Group .

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:50:00 EET (17:50:00 GMT). So 11h 25m from now.

Varvara is due to start at 20:20:30 EET (18:20:30 GMT). So 11h 55m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Varvara finished 1st out of 15 in the FS, with a score of 100.39. This meant that she remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 158.93.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch LIVE, as I was concentrating on the Russian Championships. However, I did pause the livestream and watch back later on.

Here is the sort of comment that I would have written about the Warm-Up for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

Mmmm. Chiara was easy enough to spot at the start of the Warm-Up, because I have seen her FS already this season. But Varvara was trickier, because I don't know what her costume looks like, and there were two tiny girls in this group. But, when one of them came close to the camera, I realised that she had dark hair. So Varvara was the other one.

Right at the start, Chiara claimed a spot right in the middle of the rink to do some spinning. When she headed off, VArvara came into shot doing some jumping drills.

Varvara came in and out of shot a few times. But, we didn't see her doing any elements.

Then we saw Chiara come into shot, taking off her jacket to reveal the familiar red dress that we had so far only seen sticking out from under her jacket.

For the next while, they each came in and out of shot, but we didn't see them do any elements. Then Varvara came in and did a beautiful jump right at the edge of the shot. And then Chiara came in and did a beautiful jump in the same spot. Although, Chiara's landing was slightly out of shot.

Then Chiara came around and did another jump in the same spot. Meanwhile Varvara came towards the camera, and we got a good look at her close up head on. Just after this, Chiara went past the camera close up.

When they both came back into shot, I was worried there was going to be a collision between them. But, they were far enough away from each other for it not to happen. Chiara did a lovely jump, while Varvara changed direction and headed towards the camera before going out of shot. And then Chiara went past the camera again close up.

Chiara then came back into shot and did a lovely jump in the corner where she and Varvara and been doing jumps earlier. And then Varvara went past her. Chiara circled round and went out of shot near where she had done the jump, I assume to talk to her coach.

Meanwhile, Varara came back into shot and did a beautiful jump in the other corner, the one in the middle of the camera shot. This was the start of a sequence of jumps.

Well, that was the last we saw either of them doing any elements, because the Warm-Up then ended.

And now it is time for Chiara to do her Free Skate.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST CHIARA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is the sort of comment that I would have written about her programme for the competition thread if I had been watching LIVE:

Now that she is not wearing her jacket, we can see that Varvara is also wearing a red dress. But it turns black at the very end to blend in with her black tights.

Oooh, Varvara was doing lot of practicing jumps in the gap between the previous skater leaving the ice and her being intoduced. You would think most skaters would do smaller things before doing their programme. But, she is a little jumping bean, after all.

Mmmmm. I don't think this is my kind of music.

Interesting choreography at the start.

Beautiful sequence of jumps, until the third one where she jsut about landed it. Audience are appreciating it.

Next junp beautiful.

And so was next,. And the layback spin,.

Beautiful combiantion jump.

Ach, fell on next jump.

Made up for it on the next combination. Amd tje spin.

Now it's like she's just doing jumps for fun! And spins too!

I know I haven't seen everybody, but I would be highly surprised if she doesn't win the FS by a country mile! Even with the mistakes.

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols,

Varvara finished the Free Skate 1.68 points ahead of 2nd position, Lia LYUBENOVA (Elit), and 7.32 points ahead of 3rd position, Krista GEORGIEVA (Elit).

Overall, Varvara finished 10.05 points ahead of 2nd position, Lyubenova, and 16.67 points ahead of 3rd position, Georgieva.

And like the SP, these were new Absolute PB scores!!!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

You know, seeing the results, I can understand now why the Denkova-Staviski club would have wanted Varvara to switch to representing Bulgaria. Because their other skaters finished in 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th positions overall. The club had a skater that was capable of beating the Elit club's skaters, but she was representing Cyprus. So, they decided to bring her into play for next season onwards.

As a fan of the Cypriot team, I was really looking forward to seeing Varvara, Vasilisa and Olivia in the same field. Three very strong skaters, pushing each other onwards. However, there was no guarantee that they would be able to do enough to earn slots for all of them in the years going forward. And Varvara's team realised that there would be a better chance of making sure Varvara got the slots if she represented her club's country.

I hope it works. Because all three girls deserve to get slots.

Anyway, let us celebrate Varvara becoming Bulgarian Junior Ladies Champion.

:cheer: WELL DONE VARVARA!!! :cheer:

Erm, I think I made a boo-boo.

On Sunday, the Entries / Results page for the Sofia Trophy was put up. And when I was looking through it on Monday morning, I spotted that Varvara was entered in Advanced Novices (yes, you read that correctly, Advanced Novices). Knowing that she is under embargo until 6th April 2026, I questioned whether this was allowed.

Here is how the discussion in the event thread went:

When I went to make out the reminder post for this thread this morning, I discovered that the Time Schedule PDF had been amended yesterday, and Varvara (who had been due to be the penultimate skater to go in the SP) was now down as a withdrawal. Here is what I posted in the event thread:

I should have kept my trap shut. But, I frequently get confused over the intricacies of the rules, and was curious to know if there was something in them that I didn't know about.

If this is my fault, I am so sorry Varvara!
