Varvara finished 8th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 80.78. This meant that she dropped to 7th position overall, with a score of 126.44.
Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Sonja Henie Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Maria Olszewska Memorial.
Looking at the Protocols, it is not pretty. She had a very rough first three elements; then an issue with one of the elements in the middle; and then a very rough couple of elements near the end.
The Protocols don't rell us what happened with the opening Triple Loop. But it got the third biggest GOE hit, at -1.96; as well as -4 from four Judges; and -2 from Judge 2. Then she didn't have a clear edge and fell on the second element, the Triple Flip. This resulted in the biggest GE hit of the programme, at -2.65; and -5 from all five Judges.
The third element was supposed to be a Triple Loop with annother jump attached onto the end of it. However, she landed it on the quarter and fell. And because she had already done a Triple Loop on its own, it was called as a repeated element. It got the second biggest GOE ht of the programme, at -2.45; and -5 from all five Judges.
The Change Foot Combination Spin that she did next went well. But then she did a Triple Toe-Double Axel-Double Axel in sequence. And the final Double Axel was under-rotated. It got the fourth biggest GOE hit, at -0.98; along with -3 from two Judges; and -2 from three Judges.
The next two elements went well. But then her Choreographic Sequence was invalidated for some reason. And then something went wrong with her Triple Salchow-Double Toe. It got -0.72 in GOE; as well as -2 from three Judges; and -2 from two Judges.
But she finished the programme on a high, with her best element of the programme, the Layback Spin. It got the highest GOE of the programme, at -0.72; and the best Judges marks, with two +1's; and three +2's.
Varvara was fortunate that her programme had the second highest Base Value of the field. Only she and Natasa JERMOLICKA (LAT), who finished 3rd in the FS, had programmes with Base Values higher than 50. And as a result, even though so many things went wrong for Varvara, she still managed to have the fifth highest TES of the entire field. Only the skaters making up the Top 4 had higher TES's than Varvara.
Varvara finished the Free Skate 0.50 points behind 7th position, Adéla VALLOVÁ (CZE), and 5.33 points ahead of 9th position, Sarah JOHANSSON (SWE).
Overall, Varvara finished 1.14 points behind 6th position, Vallová, and 1.56 points ahead of 8th position, Evelina STAVICKYTĖ (LTU). The three of them are the bottom three skaters in a group of 4 skaters covered by 3.25 points, stretching up to Jelizaveta DERECINA (LAT) in 5th position, 1.69 points ahead of Varvara.
It just goes to show how important it is to have a programme with a high Base Value. If you have a good skate, all well and good. If you don't have a good skate, the high Base Value can save you from finishing way down the order. And the latter scenario is what happened with Varvara in Oslo.
Of course, we would prefer for Varvara to have a good skate. And hopefully she will the next time she is in action.
WELL DONE VARVARA!!!
