For all dog owners on this forum, please be warned about a new strain of kennel cough. All of my dogs are vaccinated every year against kennel cough (the Bortadella vaccine), but two of them have been very sick with a new strain of kennel cough that both my vet and the local emergency vet are seeing a lot of. Apparently, it does not matter if you have had your dog(s) vaccinated, they can still get this illness.
It is a virus and lasts about 7 to 10 days. At the first sign of your dog coughing, PLEASE GET HIM/HER TO THE VET ASAP! The kennel cough itself is not fatal, but the dog is weakened and can develop pnuemonia and other life threatening illnesses. Both of my dogs who are ill have been given cough suppressants and two week courses of antibiotics in order to ensure that the kennel cough virus is all they get. So far, my other two dogs have not come down with it, I am keeping my fingers crossed! My vet said that my cat cannot get the virus, it does not cross species.
Several of my friends' dogs have come down with this virus, and my vet said it is making the rounds. Please watch your own dogs for it, and warn your friends!
Simba, my shih tzu, is almost completely recovered, and Panda, my peke-a-poo, turned the corner yesterday. Panda only woke us up twice during the night coughing, so she is definitely getting better. Simba is no longer coughing after 9 days.
