Watching Campbell's on TV

I completely agree about her stroking. I am really puzzled by the scores that she's been receiving for skating skills on the PCS. Skating skills better than Kwan, and Arakawa? I don't think so. I would also give Kostner higher ss than Cohen.

You know, I've watched SC's performance to see this "difference" that some are saying they see, and I just don't see it. To me she looks weaker, and her jumps looked like they've always looked. Actually, to me her jumps started looking strong when she was with Robin, her flow and stroking looked better too. Now, back with Nicks is "same old, same old." But it's the first comp. of the season, things can change.

ITA about the stroking. Her higher component marks than Kwan's were shocking last year. I do think her jumps (landings) at Campbell looked better than they did in the past. Her landings are often wobbly, except on the double axel (somehow she seems to feel very secure with that jump). However, that could be due to the lack of pressure (it's only a cheesefest). I do expect the program to get better, and I do believe the judges will continue to give her high component marks. She does deserve them for the positions and lines but not for the edge quality. Shizuka's overall skating quality is much better. For the first outing Sasha skated very well.

One more complaint about ABC's telecast:

They almost showed Sasha's whole program at the end AGAIN, pointing out various stretched positions. However, this came at the cost of #2 and #3 men (Weiss and Goebel respectively). That was not fair to the men nor to the viewers. We did not need to see Emily's struggles on the ice, after an illness. Cutting those two items and a little fluff would have given ABC room for 2 mens programs.

I was happy to see the new programs. Loved Sasha's program, I do hope they change the ending though. Sasha does seem older and for some reason she looks taller maybe that's why she looks so thin. I re-wound my tape to watch her program over at least 3 times.

I was really disappointed that they showed Alissa's program, it was painful to watch. Why on earth would they show that program and not Weiss and Goebel??

Shizuka seems like she doesn't want to skate anymore. Her spirit was not even there. I loved Tatianna's comment.........You have skate clean to win, something on that order. Someone commented here that Tatianna's skaters get her approval when they skate well, did anyone notice Pricilla Hill, Frank Carroll?? What do you expect from a coach??..........oh by the way, you fell 4 times, great job??? Shizuka was just not there and it showed and if she doesn't change her attitude, we will be hearing of a coaching change.

I watched Johnny's program a couple of times and he seemed like he wasn't there but I am hoping that he gets everything put together before Skate Canada.

OK, but seriously. There must be a reason, which they are not telling us, for why they showed Lysacek's please-let's-forget-this-as-soon-as-possible performance instead of Weiss' solid second place and Goebel's maybe-should-have-won efforts.

Maybe the tape messed up or something. That would explain (I can't think of any other reason) why they had to stretch the second hour out as long as possible by showing all of the ladies, even poor Emily, plus the entire ladies' warm-up, plus the hastily produced slo-mo/double-time replay of Sasha.

It was like the director was standing in the background holding up a big cue-card saying, "Stretch it guys, we got nothin'."

That's a good point that I never thought about...

I'm not sure what sort of connection you have. Did you happen to download Shiz's skate from JIP? IMO, it was not TERRIFIC but I thought it was better than this one. When I saw the "home video" version of Shiz's skate, I thought it looked like jet lag or something compared to the JIP - which wasn't perfect either. Just curious for the opinions of those who have the technical bandwidth, etc. to have seen both.

Evan is probably more marketable than Mike or Tim (I don't know why)

Ladies is the more popular side of the sport in the mainstream American media

it's all about $$ the men were all lackluster from most reports... and the ladies field was more promising I guess lol

can you tell I'm in journalism class right now? LOL

ETA :: Did anyone catch the credits at all for this event. Was Doug Wilson producing/directing? (some people are like me and want to know lol)

I don't think Shizuka's poor (relatively speaking) skate had anything to do with her attitude. That is a rather harsh assessment of her mental state, based on just one competition, IMO. Every skater has a bad day, and this was not a particularly bad skate; just not upto her standard.

You made similar comments about Shizuka and Johnny- "just not there". Yet, you had an optimistic view of his imperfections. Any particular reason?

Johnny's program looked like it was not quite ready, or he was not quite ready to skate it yet. Some moves looked incomplete/unfinished. He was not holding them like he normally does. From what I read, this is a relatively new program for him. That may have something to do with it.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like yelling into the TV for her to push harder. Her highlight moves are outstanding but her stroking IMO is weak. It is almost as if she is waddling. Perhaps it is because she is so tiny but she doesn't fill the ice when she skates.
It's not just you. Actually, I get almost Elvis Presley shooting the TV with a gun about it because there's just no reason for her not to have improved her stroking. As I've said many times before, for one thing, Sasha does not get down into the ice with a good deep knee bend. She also doesn't use her edges to create power, speed, flow, and ice coverage--exactly the things Kurt Browning said he worked with Takeshi Honda on. It boggles the mind that skaters like Cohen and Honda, the latter having been around even longer and with more coaches, have not gotten the basics of good stroking that will help them build to magnificent stroking. Russian skaters such as Kulik and Slutskaya have it, though I know some people don't like the way Irina uses her back. But believe me, when you see Irina skate live, three back strokes and she's half-way across the rink.

As for size, I'll use the example of comparing Sasha's stroking to Fumie Suguri's, who is pretty much the same size as Sasha. Fumie has breathtaking speed--again, when you see it live is when the difference knocks you back in your seat. Fumie covers the ice like nobody's business, I mean, she is everywhere and with magnificent efficiency. Sasha still seems to skate on the surface of the ice instead of down into it. Next time you see Fumie, notice the great knee bend. It's very difficult to actually see her edging on TV, but boy, you sure can see the effect. She's another one that can cross half the rink with three back strokes.

Just so it's said, Sasha has her strengths and she's made a great many improvements. But we're talking here about her stroking and jumps.

Bdreampixie, ITA with you that Sasha's jumps started looking strong and her stroking was better when she was with Robin Wagner. Plus, it was virtually an immediate difference after she started working with Wagner, at least to my eyes.

But unfortunately I also agree that since returning to Nicks, her jump technique and stroking have regressed. I find it sad, because I think she has the strength and work ethic to do it if her coach would guide her. Plus, I'm still going to be a broken record about wanting her to gain about 5 pounds of muscle, 2lbs. in her upper body and 3lbs. in her quads, hamstrings, gluteals, and lower leg muscles. I know 2lbs. in the upper body and 3lbs. in the lower doesn't sound like much, but if I were in the mood I'd calculate how much more energy she could generate with just that much more muscle. I'd actually like to see Sasha put on about 7 to 10 lbs. of muscle--basically one does it with high intensity weight training and a high protein diet; skaters at Cohen's level get enough aerobic work with skating--but that would have to be over a two year period so her body could adjust to the extra weight for jumps.

But for this season, I still think any gain in muscle mass would help. She may have done off-ice training during the summer to get stronger so she could save jumps she otherwise would have tanked. But if she did Pilates, which can do great things for a skater, but it's not good for building muscle mass. Without the additional muscle there's not the additional energy producing mass to help her get a deep knee bend for stroking, which builds more speed, which helps with jumps, or in the upper body, get more strength for pulling the arms in for maximum speed on rotation. I think the weakness in her upper body is the main reason she can't do a 3/3--JMO. Plus I think for Cohen more muscle, like she had at the '02 Olympics, would just help her all around. Sorry for going on and on, but the lack of improvement in her stroking and jumps irks the he!! out of me.

As an example, look what gaining muscle mass did for Michelle. She gained it mostly in her upper body--and doesn't she look great with it too!--but she also built some in her lower body. As a result, Michelle's jumps, IMO, got higher and more solid--at least in '03 when it seemed she had trained particularly hard in this area--greater speed with greater efficiency on her stroking, plus the ability to "move out" more. That is, stretch her movements out further and still maintain her center of mass/gravity. Example: The way Michelle was able to do her straight line footwork.

Regarding Cohen, I don't know who I want to kick in the butt more, Sasha or Nicks.

My last word on Sasha: I loved the spit. Really! My take on it is she didn't want to swallow the water, there was no cup available to do a "lady-like" hidden spit and it was time for her to go out on the ice. So she just spit over the boards. She had a little smile on her face right after she did it, which I interpreted as her knowing the camera was right on her when she spit and at least I saw the smile as an ironic, "So ya think figure skating is glamorous?" Also, one could spin the spit to say it makes figure skating look more like a sport.

In the future, in order to be concise, if I write "Sasha needs more muscle" I hope people will know what I mean. Of course it goes without saying that in addition to the added muscle she needs to be taught the techniques of edging and other skating basics so she can use it.

Okay, done now. Sigh.

Vash, it is just my opinion that I stated the Shizuka looks as though she doesn't want to skate anymore. I hope I'm wrong, because I like her very much.

I don't understand this question. I would like to answer but I don't get what you're asking.

I usually despise spitting but in my quest for FS to become less precious the "Sasha Spit' raised her up in my book, LOL. What would have been the harm of her swallowing one little drink of water though?

She's never going to have spectacular line, but she already has a lot of other spectaculars that SHOULD be rewarded by the judges under the COP, except perhaps a 3/3--or did she? I can't remember.

I love Rochette's skating as well, and she usually has a triple triple, and i think she just changed the combination today. Maybe not. Does anyone know which is worth more points? 3T3T or 3T2T2L?

So why are (we) people talking about this? I was wondering.

Baseball players are spitting all the time, and football players too. But in a "sport" like figure skating something like that STANDS OUT. That's why it was so odd. You usually don't see something like that in an FS broadcast.

Another thing...this WASN'T A LIVE broadcast. In other words the producers CHOSE to show us whatever they showed. They could have removed that footage if they wanted to. If this broadcast were live (and therefore the people didn't know what was going to happen) I don't think there would be such discussion (or as much).

I think even drinking the smallest amount of water might have made a difference out there, hence why she (might have) spit it out.

BACK TO SKATING

Hopefully Arakawa can get her "act" back together. She can really be a contender if she puts her mind into it. But maybe her heart isn't in it anymore, and when that happens what can you do?

I thought Rochette was better but she did fall. I think if she hadn't fallen she would have been 2nd. (Wasn't the total amount of points very close?)

I disagree about Suguri. I've seen her compete for three years in a row at Worlds, and I would not call her stroking efficient. I think she churns quickly, but loses at lot of her power laterally instead of pushing herself forward, and, in particularly in DC and Moscow, I could hear the scratches in her cross-overs from halfway across the rink. I've also noticed that she opens with more speed into her opening jumps/combos and then ends with a very fast spin, but that she loses a great deal of speed for most of the middle 2-2.5 minutes of her program. That is unlike Arakawa, Kostner, Sebestyen, Slutskaya, or even Rochette. Ando is, in my opinion, a much smoother skater in person than Suguri.

Live, to me they look quite different in size, and according to their ISU bios, Cohen is 145 cm tall while Suguri is 157 cm tall. That's a good 5 inch difference in height, although I wouldn't have guessed that much.

The "Sasha spitting incident" was so reminiscent of the 2002 Olympics and Alexei spitting right on the ice. He didn’t do it like Sasha, one big Pa----to-o-o-e-e-e right on the ice. When Sasha took the bottle of water Mr. Nicks said………….not too much now, so I think that’s why she spit it out. I give her a lot of credit for the way she did it, I know that I would have spit it out all over myself.

3T/3T = 4.0+4.0 = 8.0 points.

3t/2T/2L = 4.0+1.3+1.5 = 6.8 points

Just an interesting tidbit. I was discussing knee bend with my coach and he told me that a lot of instructors stress knee bend, but that is not always the best thing for skating. He said that really deep knee bend makes skaters very inconsistent on the jumps. Obviously that's not the case for every skater, but you mentioned Fumie and I know Sasha Abt had amazing knees (as well as Shiz) and those skaters are very inconsistent with their jumps. Michelle and Irina have good knee bend, but they aren't as into the ice as Shizuka and their jumps are considerably more consistent.

Ice dancers have the deepest knees, however they don't need to jump. My coach's theory is that the deeper the knees, the more control a skater loses. He's a very good coach so I take his word for it.
