Whatever happened to Nobunari Odo/Chengjiang Li?

Don't know if I spelled these names right, but I missed Odo from Japan all season, and maybe saw Li from China once. Does anyone know what happened to them and/or why they weren't in the Worlds?

Oda was not permitted by his Federation to attend any GP events because of his drunk driving violation. I heard that he decided to sit the rest of the year out afterwards, and plans to come out strong next year.

I hope Oda has a big comeback. The japanese media will either put a lot of pressure on him or just forget about him and replace him with new sensation Kozuka. I wish him all the best.

As for Chengjiang Li. He had a good 4CC results and he has a top 24 SB which will assure him a GP assignment next year so he can still continue competing but honestly I think his time has passed long ago.

Just after getting back from the airport after coming back from Japan on Ice show in Italy Nobunari got invited by the teacher staff from Kansai University to \"discuss his future\". Aparrently, the staff guys felt it appropriate to discuss a student\'s future in sauna & grilled meat stand at night, and faciliating the discussion with some beer. Around 10 at night Nobu went back to Osaka by train, but the jet lag kicked in and he fallen asleep. He missed his station, and it was a few hours before he woke up and got back to Takatsuki (his home city). He forgot his cell phone, so he could not call his mother to pick him up as he normally does. He had a meeting in the morning scheduled, so he was in a rush to get home. Not feeling any influence of alcohol, he took his mini-bike and went home. 50 meters away from the station there is a police check-up point, which, had he been suspected being still UI, he might have been wary of... The police, having nothing better to do in the middle of the night (about half past 1 AM) on an empty road, took interest in him. As one of the policement later said to the press, they were about to let him go when one of the policemen smelled beer and they decided to put him through the breathanalyzer test, which he failed. His BAC was low enough that he could be twice as \"under influence\" in Canada, UK or some USA states, but it was over the limit in Japan.

By the next morning the gutter media made Nobu into a Paris Hilton, implying that he just had fun and crashed his minibike, and generally was worthless scum that tries to use his celebrity status to get away with everything. He was under house arrest for a week, and forbidden to leave Japan for a month, less in a drunken stupor he goes mad and kills half the Japan and then go after the rest of the World.

The JSF suspended Nobu for 3 months from National competitions and 5 months from international ones and cut his funding.

He was expected to compete in the Japanese Nationals, but withdrew because of mental trauma. He also decided to prolong his punishment and give up his entire season. One might think that this show of repentance would calm JSF a little, but alas, one of JSF officials (most probably Chairman Ito) threw a hissy fit and called Nobu \"irresponsible\", \"selfish\", and to be blamed for the loss of 3 spots (underestimating Kozuka, who kept 3 spots by placing 8th).

After that there was an article by AsahiWeekly claiming that Nobu is still suffering from mental trauma and it is influencing his physical strenght (loss of muscle strenght, loss of weight).

However, just before Worlds, Lee Barkell, Nobu\'s coach, said that Nobu went back to Canada and is training as hard as if he was preparing for Worlds. He switched choreographers and is training ballet. His comeback is planed this summer, at one of the Canadian competitions.

Here is a thread dedicated to Nobu at Mao\'s forum; it contains the link to the article quoting Barkell:

Chenjang Lee competed at Worlds, but did not made the LP. :(

ETA: I was late. Oh well.

I've been WONDERING what the deal with Li is. Odd how someone who twice came close to medalling at Worlds (and one year SHOULD have, IMHO) is now getting the kind of results he's been getting the last couple of seasons.

Oda comes back with a vengeance... Kozuka, Oda, Takahashi. What a talented bunch. 1-2-3 at Vancouver ;)?

So glad to hear that he is doing well, training hard - I am looking forward to seeing him next season.

ISU needs to send one of the three to Skate America next season, it's traditional that Evan Lysacek is beaten by a Japanese guy at the beginning of the season.

Or course I hope that the JSF leaves Oda alone now, I think he suffered enough. He is only human.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I sure got my answers. So sorry to hear what Oda went through. Seems excessive punishment to me, but glad he's making a comeback. I think he's still young enough to be successful.
