Well, some of you were not even born yet....but in an age before much of our technology, Mt St. Helens was awakening...I was on a motorcycle trip from Urbana Illinois to Cambridge Idaho to see my college room mate who was the veterinarian there. I knew nothing about the volcano activity. The next day, I was on US 95 headed for Cambridge and kept seeing trucks covered with some sort of ash coming south. When I pulled into my friend's driveway, the first thing he said to me was "You dont know, do you?" The ash completely missed Cambridge, but covered my future home outside of Spokane. For years after we bought our land in 1991, you could still find ash on my property. Since then, I have toured Cambridge and Mt St Helens many times. Including 2012.

A relatively easy date for me to remember :love2: . The previous week in Ventura, California, I had just met the lovely woman who later became my wife. She told me later that she and her parents drove from Portland to Seattle just before the freeway was closed due to the eruption.

Although still living in Vancouver at the time, I happened to be visiting an older friend in Richmond, where I also ended up living years later. We were outside admiring her garden when there was a very loud bang and we jumped and looked around. Our friend said it sounded like either it was yet another car accident at a notorious intersection nearby, or a bird had been immolated on a power pole. After we went inside again, she turned on her radio and that's when we heard it was the mountain blowing its top, about 500 km to the south over the border.
