Of all the options in the field, including Gravel, Paul, Kucinich and Duncan Hunter, Huckabee is the very last candidate I'd vote for.

Huckabee is a close associate of Bill Gothard, and has taken his 'courses'.

Gothard is not an ordinary evangelical Christian. He is a certifiable nut.

He thinks schizophrenia is caused by 'irresponsibility'.

He thinks cabbage patch dolls are possessed by demons

He thinks that any music with a rock beat, including Christian rock, is of the devil.

Religion is a strange bird indeed.

Mitt Romney, for instance, believes that in 1830 the Angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith and gave him some golden tablets containing a new revelation of God. Smith took the tablets home and dictated their contents to his wife (who, however, was not allowed actually to see the tablets – Joseph Smith hid them under the table out of sight while he dictated.) That task complete, the angel returned and took the Golden Tablets back.

The essential content of the Golden Tablets was that Jesus, during the day and a half between his crucifixion and his resurrection, visited the western hemisphere and revealed himself to the people there (the forerunners of the American Indians). This was because it wasn’t fair for only the people of the Middle East to have a chance to hear Jesus’ ministry. The Indians, however, did not really embrace this new religion, and the last teachings of Jesus disappeared in the Americas until the astonishing events of 1830.

According to Mormon doctrine, members of the African race, bearing the “mark of Cain” (a dark skin and a flat nose), were not worthy of full participation in the Mormon Church or the blessings of heaven. This is because they took the side of Lucifer against his brother Yahweh, two sons of Elohim, the supreme God who lives with his myriad wives on a planet circling the star Kolob.

However, in 1978 the U.S. government, acting under provisions of the Constitution giving Congress the right to regulate interstate commerce, put the screws to the U&I Sugar company, owned by the President of the Mormon church. Said President received a miraculous revelation from God that the Negroes had now served their time of penance and could receive the full benefits of church membership.

Mathman, religion is always a matter of faith. From a point of view of a non-Christian, something like the immaculate conception is just as odd a concept as anything you've listed about Mormonism. In addition, each culture is struck by various aspects of religion. For example, have you noticed that Mexican churches (at least older ones) almost never show Christ actually dead on the cross? This is because early Spanish missionaries found that local pagan population found it absurd to have a god dying - so they tried to circumvent this as much as possible, much as LDS church has circumvented many of its earlier believes.

The difference here from what Doris is talking about is that it's one thing to hold an anachronistic private belief, and a totally different thing to actually suggest that public policy follows. For example, nobody was bothered by the fact that Lieberman (not my favorite politician, but still) doesn't eat pork, because clearly he wouldn't have interfered with other Americans consuming this meat. If, OTOH, he publicly said "pig is an unclean animal, and G-d fearing Americans should not consume it" - then she should have been booted out of politics together with all of his believes. (Of course, Lieberman did say that the 1st amendment guaranteed freedom of religion as opposed to freedom from religion - but let's just ignore this for now, heh?)

Well, see, it's like this. Way back then God went around doing lots of miraculous and incredible things. Now, not so much.

That's intersting about Mexican Christians. A big difference in Catholic and Protestant religious imagery is that Catholics use the cruxifix to emphasize the sacrifice of Christ, while Protestants go with the empty cross, representing the resurrection.
