No significant fires near us this year. The major onces this year are north of Kelowna and just north of Vernon. But our air quality is quite another story

As I was writing this, a massive fire broke out about 15 km west of Summerland. The evacuation area includes all of Summerland and the highway to Kelowna is closed. Summerland is about 10 km north of Penticton. At least one person in my exercise class lives in Summerland.

As I was writing this, a massive fire broke out about 15 km west of Summerland. The evacuation area includes all of Summerland and the highway to Kelowna is closed. Summerland is about 10 km north of Penticton. At least one person in my exercise class lives in Summerland.

There's actually a bit of smoke in the air here today, but I notice the reports divide the metro Vancouver area into four, and where I am, the SW corner, has much better air quality than the other quarters. I guess it depends on what direction the wind blows. My cat's vet just diagnosed him yesterday with a new heart problem and put him on blood pressure pills. The vet phoned this morning all worried to make sure I was keeping the windows and balcony door closed for the sake of one of his favourite geriatric patients. (Not worrying about me, you understand.)

Now I'm concerned about the husband of one of my friends since high school days, who she had to install in a care home just north of Penticton recently when his increasing Alzheimer's caused him to create a flood in their bathroom. What do they do with hospital and non-independent care home patients if there's an evacuation for any reason ?!

AFAIK, there isn't anything like a hospital in the evacuation zone. But there are some care homes. They would be accommodated in Penticton. Our hospital had a massive expansion about 7 years ago, and the emergency and post-surgery departments have since been remodeled and expanded with many pseudo-rooms (walls on 3 sides and curtains on the fourth). When I was there, they were only using about 10% of their capacity. If they want to keep people and their caregivers together, they could use large empty spaces like the Community Center gym and school gyms.

Summerland proper has not had any fire damage. But there is no electricity, and they have bypassed the water treatment plant and are pumping untreated water into the pipes to keep up the pressure for fire fighting purposes. They have a boil water advisory, but water may also be contaminated by fire retardant, which is not removed by boiling.

In other words, Summerland expects to be evacuated for quite a while even after the immediate fire danger passes. The goodish news is that Peachfest is on in Penticton, but has been canceled for today. I expect the tourists to be scurrying for the exits, freeing up hotel rooms for evacuees.
