Yagudin, Shen/Zhao headline World HOF class

Yagudin wanted to move to US. Right? His daughter lives in Paris and she is schoolgirl there but you know this perfectly. You mentioned Mr. Mayorov, that wasn't a nice thing from Yagudin..you know what I'm talking about.

Making money at home but spending abroad is a very popular way of living, you know.

:coffee: Sorry, Plushyfan, but something is wrong with your head, if you think, that "Plushy" doesn't spend money abroad.
It is not normal, that I answer, but all Yagudin's family spends much time in Russia (they don't rest in summer, they are in Sochi), he likes to fly by Russian planes, he has a house near Moscow, his mom and grandma are here (Petersburg). I'm not sure, but maybe his beloved dog never leaves Russia.
Do you ever think about your own behaviour, when you try to judge, who is good and who is not good? You were funny, but... well, OK, count every Evgeni's ruble and dollar, if you think, that it's OK to do that.
:coffee: Yet keep smiling, of course.

Yagudin is kinda like when Jennifer Hudson was dismissed by Simon Cowell when she was eliminated from American Idol. Then she wins an Oscar and deliberately chooses not to credit them for her success even though they were, due to the awful treatment. That to me is the basis of some of Yag's comments. You could see he was not happy with Mishin even if he was successful, so when he wins the biggest prize of all OGM, why credit/praise someone who was a jerk to you? It's much better shade to credit your current coach when you won -- actually THAT is a solid "screw you", come to think of it.

Mishin never was jerk with Yagudin. This is not his style. Yagudin was not telling the truth to the Western media. Do you know why he is not Russian champion?

This is has got to be one of the pettiest arguments I've seen on this board. This is to honour people inducted into the Hall of Fame. Do these discussions always have dive downwards into a petty argument about who's better, who's worse, cast judgment on the skater's life choices and then insult other board members? You have got to be kidding me.

I'm sure Plushenko will be elected to the Hall of Fame right after the waiting period (5 years?) is over as he finally announced his retirement from competition. His name will be a great addition to the Hall. I haven't been a big fan of his skating, but it is no doubt that the two Russian skaters are legends to have flourished our sport. So let's congratulate Yagudin's induction this time. :)

Yes, sorry, I absolutely agree. I try to say only positive things in such cases. Sorry.

Sorry. :) Yagudin works so hard, that he will have a right to cry, even if he will be the only man who may cry. He works with a smile. He does all he can to make other people smile, to help everybody to be brave and confident. And not to care about less important things.
The readers of his instagram and Tatiana's instagram write to them: "You are our sunshines!" Actually, it is hard to translate those words which people invent for Alyoshenka Yagudin and for his family. Navka comes to his instagram and laughs, when they say "Alyoshenka". Alyoshenka laughs together with her.
A family of "sunshines" looks like this :)

I'm not a fan of his skating either (surprise!), but he has definitely earned his place in the HoF. And yes, his rivalry with Yagudin, and comeback, was one of the greatest in figure skating history.

I got a kick out of this wording regarding Trixie Schuba:

She is considered the greatest compulsory figures skater of all time, as she earned untouchable leads after the figures portion of the competition. Schuba was so dominant that the International Skating Union altered the weight of scoring figures from 60 percent to 50 percent...

This makes it sound like the ISU decided that it wasn't fair that other skaters had to compete against Schuba -- she was too good -- so they changed the rules to give someone else a chance.. :)

By the way, the Hall of Fame solicits nominations from the public. If there is someone that we would like to see nominated next year -- Yao Bin for instance -- we could all write in next year.

All this talk about Mishin, Yagudin, and Plushenko.

I want to direct some love to Shen and Zhao. Pairs used to be my favorite discipline to watch behind Ladies figure skating. I was a big fan of Gordieva and Grinkov and was heartbroken when Sergei died so young. I still watched Pairs whenever the Olympics came around though. Shen/Zhao were kind of ignored by media during the Salt Lake Olympics because of the Olympic rigging happening that led to today's scoring system. Too bad though, since they were the first Chinese Pair to ever get an Olympic medal. The next Olympics the story was focused on Zhao's recovery from Achilles surgery and I was thrilled that they pulled off a repeat Bronze. They finally captured the elusive Gold in Vancouver and I couldn't be happier. I went to see my first ice skating show just because they were going to appear in it and they performed their Olympic gold winning SP 'Who wants to live forever.'

Now days, I don't follow Pair at all really. My new favorite discipline to watch is Men FS. Still Pairs is an exciting field to watch and I'm thrilled that this hard working duo is being acknowledged.

Also, I get a kick out of seeing Zhao as a coach next to today's crop of Chinese Pair skaters.

Really happy for everyone, especially Shen/a hao! By the way, they felt very honored to be induced into the HOF😍

And Shen and Zhao are the first Chinese inductees to the Hall of Fame. :agree: Had not Hongbo been injured, I believe they would've won the 2006 Olympics already. I was a bit torn over the medalists at Vancouver because the gold should be only awarded to one team and they all were brilliant teams with different strengths and powers. Though, I was more than happy for them finally winning the elusive gold and happily being retired from competition. It was a fairy tale-like career ending. :)

Wow there have been some weird discussions in the thread. I agreed with Karne that it was surprising that it had taken this long for Mishin to be inducted, but if I had to nominate one coach for the HoF it would be Tarasova. I cannot think of another in her league across all disciplines and working for so long (and she can make me laugh at times). I don't see surprise at Mishin not already being there, being any kind of argument about him deserving precedence over Tarasova. I am thrilled that Shen and Zhao are being inducted. I saw them first in 1996 and didn't think much of them (oddly given how things have turned out, they didn't seem to relate all that well). I grew to love them. I would also really advocate Yao Bin being in the HoF. What he did for Chinese pairs skating is amazing.
