Yagudin, Shen/Zhao headline World HOF class

karne did in her post (you Thumbs Up'ed it, so I assume you'd read it?).

And yup, Arakawa and G&G (and Mao coming 2nd in Vancouver, with 3 triple axels, was an impressive feat that you know Tatiana was instrumental in).

Karne said: "I can't believe it's taken this long for Mishin to be inducted when Carroll and Tarasova have been there for years." - I think this means Mishin's election was too late compared to Tarasova and Caroll. Tat was inducted in 2008.

Mishin is a true Russian. He didn't want to move and work in US despite the fact he was invited. Tarasova lived there and she was the coach of one of the most popular female skaters in US.
Are you Russian?? :coffee:
(What does the word "Russian" mean, by the way? There are so many nationalities in Russia. Tutberidze, Medvedeva and Averbukh are a nice company of Russians. Actually, I don't know much about their blood and I don't care. They are Russians for me.)
Tarasova didn't have a support in Russia. They payed for everything from their pockets, as they say. Yet Russian anthem was Yagudin's anthem, Yagudin is proud, that he is Russian, and he still works for Russia, he takes care about the Universiade in Krasnoyarsk year by year. He happened to say: "My country betrayed me". Yet... as for him, he still works for my country. And Tarasova works. So... what did you mean?

and Mishin's primary successes have been Plushenko, Urmanov, Gachinski and Tuktamysheva
Yagudin is also Mishin's student, of course. And Yagudin knows it. He is also Mayorov's student. Yagudin said, that the victory belonged only to him and to Tarasova, because Mishin was saying, that Tarasova didn't do anything serious in men's skating.

Think you need a reading comprehension refresher, CSG. I said it was disgraceful that it took so long when Carroll and Tarasova have been there for years. In other words, why on earth is Mishin getting added nearly 10 years after Tarasova did? What took so long?

Is this Hall of Fame in FS really important? It doesn't seem to be so.

Why didn't they invite Alexei Nikolaevich and Alexei Konstantinovich, so that these two could say: "We don't care!!!"? It could be so nice and funny.

:laugh15: alexei.yagudin: Today I was included to the Figure Skating Hall of Fame, which is located in Colorado Springs (USA, Colorado). Of course, being included to the Hall of Fame is an honour for me, I am happy. I want to thank all those who voted for me. Yet....... actually, I don't care!!! I try to think not about the past, but about the present, in which the close-knit family is my main victory, my Hall of Fame. Two charming daughters. This is the coolest thing!!!

:) This article says, that Alexei Nikolaevich also doesn't think, that it is important.

I'm assuming that the Russians have their own Hall of Fame (or something of a similar concept). Canada has it's own hall of fame for skaters.

These things always have criteria that is sometimes arbitrary. In Golf for example it's pretty much 2 majors plus 10 PGA tour victories to assure yourself a spot. However they have let in people with 1 major. Also there is a minimum age.

I think the HOF really matters in some sports. Baseball for example reveres its hall of fame. Not being names is insulting to players if they feel they earned it. There is a reason why one of the things they took from Pete Rose was the right to be in the Hall of Fame. You will quite frequently hear a retired player introduced as "Hall of famer..." and you never hear that in figure skating.

But congratulations to the inductees. I'm sure it's a nice feather in your cap. I'm a bit mystified as how G/P aren't in a Figure Skating Hall of fame. 2 Olympic golds, 4 World Championships should really qualify you.

I can't speak for Alexei Yagudin or Shen & Zhao (I'm tight with Trixie Schuba, though :) ), but in general I do think that it is an honor to be inducted. The reason being, that election to the Hall of Fame is a kind of lifetime achievement award, rather than just winning a gold medal or a championship.

Plus, the Hall gives us a chance to honor people for other kinds of contributions to the sport and its history. Frank Zamboni is there, for instance, as well as professional ice comedian Mr. Frick.

Because adding members to the Hall of Fame isn't based on chronological order of achievements?

And honestly, who cares if he's added 10 years later? I mean, Tarasova has been coaching champions like 10 years earlier than Mishin (like rodnina and zaitsev) and in various disciplines whereas Mishin was primarily a men's coach.

To be honest I never liked the way Mishin treated Yagudin. I remember one competition where Yagudin bombed the FS and Mishin was such a dismissive jerk to him in the KNC. Sure , Mishin was key in his technique but when Yagudin went to Tarasova he blossomed into a star - one who surpassed Plushenko as a rather poetic "screw you" to his former coach.

I've also noticed another skater who had success right after leaving Mishin - Sokolova. He might teach them the jumps but he is not good at packaging and some of his students have won primarily on the basis of consistent technical superiority (which, of course, is a significant aspect of this sport, so that's okay) and not because they're well-rounded skaters with well-choreographed programs.

Yagudin is kinda like when Jennifer Hudson was dismissed by Simon Cowell when she was eliminated from American Idol. Then she wins an Oscar and deliberately chooses not to credit them for her success even though they were, due to the awful treatment. That to me is the basis of some of Yag's comments. You could see he was not happy with Mishin even if he was successful, so when he wins the biggest prize of all OGM, why credit/praise someone who was a jerk to you? It's much better shade to credit your current coach when you won -- actually THAT is a solid "screw you", come to think of it.

Will Ottavio Cinquanta be eligible for induction next year?

Knowing the ISU, I'm surprised they haven't inducted Yuri Balkov.

Also, Tonya Harding for the 2018 HOF class - I mean she and Nancy practically saved the popularity of figure skating in the mid 90s!

Probably Mishin knew why he favored Plushenko. They built the Mishin's teaching method together . Many coaches use it today.

Two interesting Yagudin's videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMwbfo9vgZw - 1998 Worlds K&C after LP - Plushenko marks and Yagudin reaction

Yagudin wanted to move to US. Right? His daughter lives in Paris and she is schoolgirl there but you know this perfectly. You mentioned Mr. Mayorov, that wasn't a nice thing from Yagudin..you know what I'm talking about.

Yagudin is one of the unique and talented figure skaters ever! I don't know why it take so long to mention him, but anyways...just congratulations!!

Well, 1998 he was very emotional because he became World Champion (and just 6 days from being the youngest World champion ever at the time!). Yagudin certainly gives Mishin due credit for his success (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...iana-tarasova-olympic-champion-alexei-urmanov), but I don't think he would have had the drive/programs it took to win the Olympics had he not switched to Tarasova. Mishin's favouritism to Plushenko would have ensured that Yagudin didn't have the best vehicles or even have the champion mentality that Tarasova clearly instilled in him.

That Euro 2000 video Yag was clearly mad at himself (it was rude to walk off though during the marks and he could have waited until they were done) - he knew he messed up, and gave Plushenko the edge going into Worlds... but then pulled it together to win there. :)

No, he was angry on the judges, and you know this. :) Plushenko was only 17. You don't forget Plush was younger as Yags was in 1998.

Plushyfan, you are charming! :coffee: Do you really hope you'll explain to me what is a true Russian? Do you really think, that these videos are so impressive? On the second video he went away. Anything else? When the journalists ask Yagudin's opinion about something like this, he says gently: "What happened again? Somebody didn't shake somebody's hand? Somebody stepped on somebody's skis? That is biathlon."

You mentioned Mr. Mayorov, that wasn't a nice thing from Yagudin. you know what I'm talking about.
Comrade Mayorov decided to leave Russia, because he needed to feed his kids. Yagudin didn't blame him. What wasn't a nice thing? :coffee:

His daughter lives in Paris
They try to spend with their children as much time as possible. So when somebody thinks, that Yagudin and Totmianina should change the place they live, Yagudin asks: "Could you tell, where Tatiana and me live?" Yagudin says: "We live everywhere". So? :coffee:

Well, 1998 he was very emotional
:) "Was"? Yagudin IS emotional, and that's wonderful. Don't worry. He wants to have a right to cry. He has such a right. He skates with a smile, he works all out, and when he is asked: "do you ever really rest???", "When are you going to sleep?" or "Please, could you be more careful, think about yourself." - he answers: "will rest in the future! In grave))))))", "The grave will take care about me! )"

If he promises to work, he does all he can. (As far as I know.)

What are we talking about, Plushyfan?? :coffee: Isn't it funny?
