Your Hopes for US NATIONALS

Zhang is the one Lady, I would hope does well. i expect the others. In spanish language, esperar is both hope and expect. Nifty, eh?

I can't do much more than hope all of them do well with a little more hope for Abbott because he is now a contender.

I'm hoping all the Pairs do well with a little more for McL & Bru to skate better to Bernstein.

I love them all, but I want to see The Hubbells in he podium mix somehow. They are America's best bet after the Olympics, imo.

I'd like to see the improvements in her skating that people were talking about over the summer. It sounded very promising, which made it all the more disappointing that she didn't do well at SC. But learning that she was coming off of tendonitis and a twisted ankle, it made more sense. So hopefully we'll see improvement here. For the ladies, I am expecting it to be between Flatt, Wagner and Zhang. I'd love to say Mirai too (and I'm definitely not counting her out), but like the others I'll wait and see.

Well said. I'm just butting in to remember Nikidinov who probably had more hope than even the mighty Kwan. Now we have Czisny in a similar situation.

I don't want any major disasters like withdrawals or skates like Kimmie had last year at Nats.
I want to watch great skating and then I want to see the one who skated the best on the top of the podium no matter who it is. However, of course I do have my favourites that I want to do well.

Ladies:
I want to see a big smile(hopefully without brackets) from Rachael Flatt after an awesome skate. I really hope she can challenge those two 3-3s. I hope Kimmie Meissner pulls it together even if she possibly won't make the world team I want her to gain confidence with two decent performances. The same goes for Emily Hughes. I'm also looking forward to see Ashley Wagner, last year she did great at Nats and I hope so she will this year. I'd love to see Caroline Zhang to go into those 2A's with speed and without hesitation. And I want Mirai Nagasu and Alissa Czisny to stay on their feet so that we can enjoy their programs. Lots of hopes for ladies that I have....

Men:
I don't want to be spoiled with the Evan-Johnny-Rivalry... I'm looking forward to seeing both of them! I want to see a couple of decent 3A's from Adam Rippon and I want Jeremy Abbott to hold things together and skate as well as he did at GPF. Also want to see Stephen Carriere skate well...

Pairs:
I really, really want to see Brooke and Ben at the top of their games and making the world team. I keep my fingers crossed for them, they deserve it after battling all those injuries. That's actually my only hope for pairs...oh, wait, no on-ice proposals please...

Ice Dance:
I want D/W and B/A to tie for first place... not that I really would want that to happen but I just can't decide whom of those teams I want to win. I'm looking forward to a great battle for third place but I want at least four teams to get it...

I would be perfectly happy just to see Kimmie finish ahead of Mirai and Caroline. WAY ahead of them. And I'd also like to see B&A kick some D&W butt in dance.

My hopes are:
Seniors-
Ladies- Flatte, Wagner, Gilles
Men- Abbott, Weir, Bradley (come on Ryan, I know you can do it!!)
Pairs- McLaughlin/Brubaker, Castille/Okolski
Dance- Davis/White, Belbin/Agosto (looking forward to how close this might be), Summersett/Gilles

Juniors (don't forget-they are our up and comings!!)
Ladies- still trying to figure this one...Dobbs?
Men- Dornbush, Mahbanoozadeh, Messing (Go Keegan!!)
Pairs- Castelli/Shnapir, Bautista/Hopson, ?
Dance- Chock/Zuerlein, Gilles/Donohue (hope she will be back-they really could challenge-had a great first season), Shib's

Looks to be a great week of skating!!

Pairs:
1. McLaughlin/Brubaker
2. Castille/Okolski
(result at Worlds: 2 US Pairs spots for 2010 though I could see the US only getting 1 pairs spot)

That's interesting, why do you see them getting only one spot? Castile and Okolski managed to get two spots at World's this year. I think M/B could do even better than them at Worlds.

Castile and Okolski didn't managed to do that alone, they placed 11th and Inoue and Baldwin 10th. 11+10=21 < 22
The placement of both teams got The US 2 spots.

I can't see the US getting less than 2 spots unless ML&B withdraw of something like that. Castille & Okolski will probably stay in 11th but ML&B have a good chance to place much better than 10th.

Seems like you are the Gilles family cheer leader ;). I think they're very good but not all will be on the podium this year.

Senior Dance, politics always play the major role. I can't see US will send any other teams to Worlds except these three: B/A, D/W and S/B. These teams did well at SGP, high likely that they're locked in for those three spots.

Ladies and Men will be more interesting, depends on who skate the best that night at the Nationals. Good luck to all .

I wish they would suddenly announce a change of mind about the CD being used. Instead of the Viennese Waltz, the Finnstep!

I think that relastically, the US has to be looking at 2 spots for the ladies in Vancouver. The current American ladies just aren't strong enough to get those thirteen points, barring injuries or meltdowns by Mao, Yu-Na, Joannie, Caro, and whichever other Japanese skaters are sent to LA (also Sarah Meier and at least one Finn, if healthy). I would like to see Flatt do well at Nationals because other than her unfortunate posture, I think she has a lot of potential and would really benefit from doing Worlds this year.

Face it! Until very recently Rochette has a tendency to implode under pressure. She had two very good GP performances, but then reverted back to her old habits in the GPF. Kostner is in the same ball park. Both can go quirky under pressure, and both can be wonderful. They are extremely fine skaters, no doubt about it.

Rachel? In my books she has a conditioning problem. She is slow, rather lethargic, but dependable and likeable. She feels the music, but unless she gets more speed and spunk, I think others must fail for her to win. Zhang has some of the same traits, but her skating has charisma. She must skate with more power and speed. (If she must "walk" into a double axle, let her do it from a near-standstill at the beginning of her program, a la Surya Bonaly.) Her "pluses" are those fantastic spins and sprials--and --her connection with the audience is like no other elegible U. S.

An aside: CoP, in the last couple of years has really put things in a flux. First (for ladies), a Biehlman was da riguer as well as a high leg on the spirals. That has been relaxed a bit (Yu Na has a so-so sprial position--her head is so low she must look sideways at the audience, albeit with a radiant smile. I don't recall her doing a Beilman. Same with Rochette.) Now this year has initiated the year of the UR and take-off edge. My take----if a judge can't detect it "live", and if the powers that be think that it so super important, make sure judges are employed who can idenitfy the errors without slow-mo. This past year, the penalties are too severe--and skaters are getting shell-shocked by the picky/pettiness. Two former World Champion Ladies have suffered severly, the latest being Ando who skated a beautiful GPF, but was so flattened by minor UR calls that she ended up behind many a less-talented skater. For shame!

First, I hope all the kids bring their A game.
Second, my hopes are based on how they might fare at Worlds.

Ladies: My hope is that Meissner and Czisny conquer their jump demons and get back on the podium. Especially Czisny. She was the only senior lady to win an international event this season, with a score higher than those posted by Meissner, Flatt, Nagasu, Zhang, Wagner, and Liang on the GP and at 4CC. That said, Flatt (coming in a close second to Czisny points-wise) probably has the best chance of a top ten finish.

Men: With Buttle, Lambiel, and Takahashi out, Abbott, Weir, and Lysacek all have the potential to medal at Worlds, so that would be the ideal podium for me. I'd love to see Abbott continue his winning streak, but any order is okay. Carriere and Bradley are capable of making the top ten at Worlds, so if they medal at Nationals, that would be fine, too.

Pairs: McLaughlin/Brubaker, Castile/Okolski, Vise/Trent in no particular order.

Dance: Belbin/Agosto, Davis/White, Samuelson/Bates.

Last but not least: A dark horse contender in any of the above disciplines pulls out from behind and blows everyone else away. That's my fondest hope at any figure skating competition.

Unfortunately, save 2007, Csizny does not have a history of doing well at Nats.

True, but the thread is about what we hope, and my hope is that Czisny and Meissner can pull it together this year.

Actually, I don't understand why everyone's so down on Caroline this season. To me, she looks like she has improved a lot on her speed and power this season.
Her TEB SP:

Her TEB FS:
http://www.dailymotion.com/muffin14/video/x7f7pb_caroline-zhang-2008-teb-lp_sport

(I wouldn't worry too much about her SC results, since she had tendonitis beforehand, couldn't practice her triples for weeks before SC, and outgrew her FS dress in the meantime. Even for TEB, two weeks later, she said she only had the chance to do a few full LP run-throughs beforehand.)

She's much faster and more fluid this season than previously, especially in the SP -- she skated that slss with more spirit than I have ever seen her done, even though this was called only a level 2. Missing that 2A was really unfortunate. She also lost valuable points by having the 3-3 downgraded and the spiral sequence called level 1. But she only had downgrades on the 3-3 for both SP and FS at TEB, which is something only few senior ladies are attempting these days. This is also a big improvement from last year, when she was getting downgraded a lot more often. She also has a reliable 3S now, another improvement.

Even though she didn't score so high in the SP, I feel like she's skating with noticeably more fluidity and comfort than previously. I think the choreography for both programs suit her well -- they are beautiful and exciting at the same time. They are both wonderfully choreographed programs with great potential.

Now, the issue with the flip and lutz take-offs are a real problem, which are leading to downgrades, 'e' calls, and falls (at SC). And her hesitation going into the 2A is a problem, too -- see how she missed her 2A altogether at TEB. Remember her shock loss to Mirai Nagasu at National's two seasons ago? She had a fall on the 2A in the SP, and on the 3F in the FS. At the time, it seemed like a fluke (as she had perfect programs all season long on the JGP circuit and JW), but now it seems like the 2A, 3F, and the 3Z are her recurring weaknesses. But if she should be able to land all her jumps all cleanly at National's, despite the flawed take-off techniques, I think she has a good chance at medaling, and non-trivial chance of winning. Only Rachael Flatt could reliably deliver a 7-triple FS (which she hasn't done yet this season), and I think Caroline has slightly better programs and presentation. So it may all come done to whether Caroline can deliver on all the technical elements despite the flawed techniques.

What's interesting is that Caroline seems to have grown a whole bunch more since TEB:

most noticeably on her thighs. It's definitely a big year in terms of physical changes for her. I'm surprised that she has thighs as thick as (if not more than) Tanith and Rachael.

It could play in her favor, as allowing her to skate with more speed and jump with more power, or her new body could throw her off. At least it looks like she's mainly gaining muscles, and her body shape is still very compact.

(On the other hand, what happened to Shawn Johnson?!! It's only been a few months since the summer olympics!)

Anyway, this thread is about hopes. I hope that Caroline can secure one of the two spots to World's, which is in her hometown this year. I hope that she skates beautifully, cleanly, and *freely* with joy and confidence. And I hope everyone else skates well, too, and make it a very exciting competition.

I noticed during the GP that Caroline had gotten taller and more muscular since last season. She seemed to skate faster as well. Her exhibition at TEB really blew me away. If she can fix her issues and land those jumps like she did at TEB, she will be unstoppable at Nationals.
