Never Been Done Music in Figure Skating

I haven't seen anyone propose classical music yet. One of my favorite pieces is the intermezzo from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana. There is an especially great moment at 1:26 when I could imagine someone skating a step sequence. I would think that someone like Machida or Takahashi could do wonders with this music. Here is the link and it is only 3 and a half minutes long.

Please someone skate to this!!! I don't think it has ever been done before.

Thanks, mrrice! I used it for a college newspaper column - I was so happy to see it turn up in, of all things, Queer Eye! I don't remember where I heard it originally to use it.

And also I share your enthusiasm for "On Broadway," someone should do a short to the Drifters version - maybe Max, it would suit him better than Nessun Dorma IMO.

I want someone to use "Classical Gas," and I think there are short programs out there to the themes from "SWAT" (the 70s version) and "Inspector Morse."

Ashley could rock Chaka's version but first I want her to do "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt.

Holy Cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just saw this post and let me tell ya.............:2thumbs:

I have a "Horror Story" for you. In Dance Drill Team ( Not Involving Skates/ Think ESPN ) I got the brilliant idea to dress my girls up in Swat Outfits and perform to "The Theme from Swat" We competed in the "Theme" Category. We even had the dads build a fake truck out of Foam Core that my girls came running out of to start the routine. I'd post it but, it's so old it's actually recorded on BETAMAX!!! :laugh2:

I have studied dance and music for decades. I watched a movie that had this song. It's hard. It's angry. It's Gob's version of Paint It Black. I almost see it all choreographed and I think Jason Brown with Rohene and his coaching team can do a bang up job on this. The ending percussion sequence is just asking for a straight line. I could help...

Call me crazy (or insane :scratch3:), but I really would like to see skaters skate to John Cage's 4'33. Only a true artist would be able to perform this piece IMHO.....

I know I've heard this before, but definitely not from watching skating. I think it was the orchestra who played it after I'd already graduated from high school. I have younger sisters who also played instruments, so I still went to a bunch of the concerts. :) I just know that it's something that I never played. I'll have to remember to ask my baby sister if she recalls playing this piece. The other sister would be no help because she was in band.

See Christopher Bowman 1989 slow section at 2:10 http://youtu.be/ACOoBZMltCU
A beautiful program with music not often used together.

Instead of the millionth Madame Butterfly or Puccini number, I'd also love someone to skate to the original version of Dido's Lament from Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Could make for a very effective :drama: SP for the right ladies skater -- maybe Pogo? It is sweeping and incredibly evocative music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9xwlWfHWv4

I think Punsalan/Swallow skated to a modern version of it as pros once, but I don't think anyone else has ever touched it.

I can definitely picture Anna Pogorilaya skating to it.

I got to thinking about some of the stuff I've played in high school, and I remembered St. Paul's Suite by Holst. I know I've watched skaters who have used The Planets, but not much of anything else by him.

The third movement of St. Paul's Suite was always my favorite. Movements one and four could also be used for a decent program. I'd eliminate the second movement from any sort of contention. It's the shortest part of the piece, and it's the least interesting of all the movements. I will own to a bit of a personal bias against the second movement because that section had the most annoying second violin part that I have ever or will ever have played.

Movement Two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXn2ViWX3Wc
(the second violin part is the run that keeps repeating)

Gave this some thought... and came up with three [very different] pieces that, while challenging, I think could really make for signature programs if brought to life by the right skaters:

1. I've always fantasized about the epic program Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" could make—though only if paired with a skater who could really bring out its nuances... Perhaps a less schtick-y, more grown up Javier Fernandez?

2.
Lara Fabian has become something of the skating go-to for *LOVE* + *HEARTBREAK* (you know, *FEELINGS*-with-a-capital-F)... But I'd love to see someone attempt something by the [tequila]-voiced ranchera singer, Chavela Vargas (I/K's FD made me think of Vargas' memorable cameo in "Frida")... This one's maybe too out-there, but I do think the right skater (i.e., mature/heartbreak-experieneced) with a back-loaded program could give us chills with this:

Chavela Vargas - "Paloma Negra"

3.
And for a more modernist classical program, I'd love to see someone try their blade at John Adams' maximalist minimalist "On the Dominant Divide" (from "Grand Pianola Movement")—probably one of the most exuberant, *triumphant*-feeling classical pieces I've ever heard. [...Has John Adams ever been used in a figure skating program?]

The entire Madonna back catalogue. I need to see them "Vogue" once in a free dance. Madison Chock would SO deliver on the performance aspect.
