Lol, Maurizio again. I was worried when he didn't compete in the early season starts, but he's busy making up for it now.
The competition here will be a bit tougher than last week with Dias and the Turkish lads, so it's gonna be an exciting event (for me).
Good luck Maurizio! 🍀

Day 1 of the Denkova-Staviski Cup is starting now with a Chicks double-bill. A group of 3 Turkish boys, followed immediately by 3 groups of girls. There are 20 girls in total, all of whom are Bulgarian or Turkish.

But, I forgot that Bulgaria is 2 hours ahead of me rather than 1. So, I'll watch the boys and then leave to have my breakfast.

Livestream for the Chicks competitions is now on air.

OK, so I know one wee girl was late going out onto the ice for her warm-up. (A rare occurrance - they are usually chomping at the bit to get out there. I can't actually remember seeing this happen before). But, I still think we don't have a full quota of skaters in this opening group.

Right, time for breakfast. I'll pause and play catch-up.

I know this is out of position because I'm behind, but I had to comment on something.

The skater that opened Group 2 was skating to "Mickey" by Toni Basil!!! You know, the song that a few weeks ago I was saying that my Cypriot Ice Dance kids should have skated to instead of the song derived from it, "It's Tricky". She even wore a cheerleader dress, a nod to what Toni wore in the video! (Different colours, though).

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Anyway, it was a heartbreaking skate to watch. It started out alright. Then, about half-way through, she fell. She got herself up and continued on, but then had a hard fall on her next element. She started crying and, with the music still playing, went over to the gate to leave. And her coach got angry and told her in no uncertain terms to get back out there! So she did, and completed her programme.

Poor wee girl!

EDIT: The skater that did this programme was not the one I remember seeing before. I didn't realise I was still in the tab that contained the Time Schedule for a segment that is linked to in my next reminder post! :p :slink:

From a Chicks double-bill, we move to a Cubs triple-bill! A group of 6 boys, followed immediately by 20 Cubs II girls; followed immediately by 26 Cubs I girls.

Because of the sheer number of girls and, consequently, the lengths of their segments, I will do 2 separate posts. Unfortunately, the resurfacings are all in the middle of segments. But, I'll try my best to keep an eye out for the change in competition.

Livestream for the Cubs competitions is now on air.

Just watched a skater who I definitely remember seeing before, because she has the female version of the surname of a skater that I have adopted. And ever since I first came across her, I have wondered if my kid has Bulgarian ancestry. (I did some research at the time, and it is actually a common surname in Bulgaria).

She didn't look very confident on the ice today. To me, she was concentrating too hard on what she was doing. It would flow better if she relaxed a bit.

Being a local skater, she got a lot of gifts thrown onto the ice. Including some hard things that made a thud when they landed on the ice. I wouldn't have thought throwing things like that would be allowed, in case they damaged the ice.

[I'm about 7 minutes behind now]

Oh my goodness. The other day, @4everchan and @NoNameFace were talking about birds in the arena at the GP de France in the past, and now the camera is spending a suspiciously long time after skater #14 looking at the rafters here. I can't see any wildlife, though.

Now the camera is looking at the ice, and there are spots on it. Is the roof leaking or something?

Well, whatever was going on, they are now continuing on with skater #15.

After skater #17 finished, the camera started moving about again. It is clearly following something around the rink. It might be a large insect, perhaps a butterfly or moth. The fact that I can't make it out means that it's definitely not as big as a bird!

Now for the final part of our Cubs triple-bill. And this is the first competition of the day that includes skaters from somewhere other than Bulgaria and Turkey. Four of them: three from Serbia (including one that I remember seeing before, as she has a very famous surname); and one from Italy.

Livestream for the Cubs I Ladies FS is now on air.

Awwww.

The last skater in the previous segment fell flat on her face early on in the programme. And she hurt herself, as she immediately put her hands over her mouth. She carried on, but was clearly in pain as she was grimmacing.

After finishing her programme, she sat down on the ice with her hands over her mouth and her head between her legs. I think she was crying. After a while, she got up, but the camera didn't follow her at first. When it did catch up with her, she was picking up a whole pile of cuddly toys. In fact, she missed one that had gone over her head, and one of the skaters in the next competition went out and got it and brought it to her.

I hope the poor wee girl is alright.

Ah, it looks like it wasn't my computer buffering before I left. It looks like it was technical problems at the arena end, because they started a new stream while I was away:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2mpWqEhbCE

And it looks like we have missed a chunk of skating, as it only came on air 16 minutes ago, in the middle of a programme. (Due to the echoey sound, I can't make out what the rinkside announcer is saying. So, I don't know who it was).

EDIT: The girl that was due to skate after the girl the new stream started during was a withdrawal. So, I just checked the livescoring page, and there was only one withdrawal, skater #13.

Which means that we joined during skater #12, Milica DJOKOVIC (SRB)... the only skater in this segment that I know I have definitely seen before! I remembered her name (for obvious reasons!), but not what she looked like! :drama:

Awww. One of the skaters towards the end of the group I just watched was skating to "Palladio", and was wearing a black dress and black lacey gloves that went up to her elbows.

Afterwards, some gifts were thrown onto the ice for her. I think one of them was the same hard thing I was complaining about earlier. Anyway, it was relatively flat and she was having difficulty picking it up. You could hear somebody in the audience laughing loudly at this. And I was thinking "that's not nice, laughing at a little girl!"

So, she took one of her gloves off, and was able to pick it up then.

That resurfacing marks the end of the Free Skate segments for today. The rest of the day is spent with the Short Programmes for the Advanced Novices. We start with a group of 5 boys (all Bulgarian or Turkish), who are immediately followed by 29 girls, with a resurfacing in the middle of the girls segment.

Livestream for the Advanced Novice SP competitions is now on air.

I meant to point out earlier, Advanced Novice Ladies is a real departure from what we have become used to today. After so many segments with only Bulgarian and Turkish skaters taking part, this segment has a lot more variety.

For a start, there are more Italians (10) than Bulgarians (9) entered. 😲

And secondly, this group that has just started has no Bulgarians in it at all! :jaw:

That said, there are 2 Turkish girls. But, the majority (4) are Italians.

And all 4 of the Italians in Group 3 are coming up now back-to-back. :drama:
