I have to say as an am. historian, they got alot of the actual details right. And that is pretty impressive for a history movie. ( I watched the Awards tonight in 1 1/2 hours. Thanks for fast forward!) There wasnt enough time to elaborate on why the bomb was dropped But as Truman said in the Movie, (on 8 min. after midnight, March 10th) The 20th Airforce leveled 16 sq. miles of Tokyo with firebombs, killing 100,000 Japanese men, women and children, and an unknown amount of allied POWs (and then dozens of other cities were fire bombed over the next 4 months) there was no reason to believe the Japanese would surrender. (The US had to test the bombs on actual buildings and people as they were building 5-15 weapons for the invasion beachheads) In the Movie, Truman tells Oppy HE dropped the bombs, which was the truth....Oppy or the air crews or anyone else can not take the blame or credit...the buck stops at Truman's desk. It is also true that Truman pulled Kyoto off the target list of the 12 cites being saved for testing as it has alot of cultural history and he spent his honeymoon there.
This is one movie that demands an attention span so its a good idea to read up on Oppy as there is alot going on in the movie, and its a long one. It deserved 7 awards it got.

A seven part mini-series of the same name was done by the BBC in 1980, the title role played by Sam Waterston which was excellent. The complete series was available on YouTube; I made it a point to watch it again this many years later before seeing Nolan’s film. Both are outstanding. The 1980 version goes into Oppenheimer’s relationship with Jean Tatlock and the Communist angle a bit more, the filmography is dated of course but well worth a look. I went back to YouTube after watching the film and it had been pulled and no longer available.. shame.
