Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

I think she has the potential to still win a world medal on the "right" day and situation but is more prone to be out of the top twelve.

She will never win a world medal. That is the honest truth. If her goal is to go out and skate her best and win medals at nationals and occasionally GP events, that is realistic.

While I agree it is VERY unlikely, never say never. That is the truth too.

Yes, new season has officially started! I think I've mostly recovered from my aneurism over the Olympic ladies podium.

I am disappointed with Mirai's outing. I always think, aha, just you wait, this is the competition in which her 2010 self comes roaring back, we'll see the Mirai who outscored a healthy Mao at a world's short program, the one who came out of nowhere to win her first senior nationals.

....

I'm still keeping the faith. She's training well and she had tons of speed going into that flip. I also appreciate the changes they made to the choreography - she has a good foundation it's just going to take some time to get all the pieces together. I also liked that she stepped off the ice, said she didn't know what happened. and without missing a beat Tom said "I know what happened" and then went on to talk her through it. I get the impression that he's a real advocate for her and he's trying to help her take these missteps as learning opportunities.

I think back to Sasha Cohen, who always implied that she was close to getting over the mental lapses in her long programs, and it never happened. Mirai has been trying to make learning opportunities from her missteps for nearly 5 years now. I would not say she's getting worse, but she isn't getting better; she is still slow about about the first minute of her programs, her triple jumps are still shaky, and her performances still lack spark and intricate choreography. It's heartbreaking to watch her struggle and talk about her body not being to last until 2018, and I wonder if she even wants to be out there competing or if someone is pressuring her to continue.

I'm pleased she was able to go for it and pulled herself up to 6th place. She was still UR on several jumps, but hope she and Tom can work on that. She shouldn't pack it in yet!

Five <'s. This was her 3rd worst GP result of her entire career (13 in total) and even a better short program would have resulted in the same placement because she was 12 points behind the next highest place skater. I change what I said earlier, she is actually getting worse relative to the competition. She simply isn't competitive with the good skaters anymore.

Have to give credit to Mirai for really flying into all of her jumps in the LP and controlling the landings. She attacked and wasn't scored correctly in the GOE for clean landings on underrotated jumps.

Although many don't like talking about it, the issue is her body at this point. She is trying to put too much weight into the air. Every ounce of unneeded body mass needs to be gone in order to get these jumps around.

I think that is just her natural build to have thicker legs. She isn't overweight but it probably isn't the optimal body type to rotate triple jumps. However, while it is naturally going to be more difficult to rotate triples now than it was for her in 2010, she is able to do them; she just isn't a very good competitor.

Mirai once again did her robot imitation in the FS at Skate America. No facial expression, as usual, but no attempt to express emotion with her body movements either. And she got 5 URs.

A 6th place finish at Skate America is not at all encouraging, and her next event is Cup of Russia, where the competition is going to be even tougher.

The competition is easier at Cup of Russia, I'd say. She can get a Bronze there. Her usual pattern of doing poorly at the first Grand Prix event and better at the next. She's going to need a clean SP and a couple less < calls in the LP.

Thanks! :)

In this Ice Network article on the ladies http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/10/26/99692832 Mirai had this to say: "Obviously it was a better skate than yesterday," Nagasu said. "One-hundred and eight is an okay score, but I know I can get a much higher score. I know I under-rotated a lot of those jumps out there today but this was a very stressful week, because I was expecting so much more out of myself, especially in the short program."

She has a better chance to medal at Cup of Russia (Bronze) if she performs like she always has been in her past second grand prix events.

Sincerely thought her lutz and flip were within the quarter of UR during the youtube slowmo version. Oh wells, but good for her to bounce back to a somewhat clean programme despite the URs. It's been a while since we Mirai bounce back from a bad showing. (Or to crumble under the pressure from a good one too.) Now to put 2 good programmes together.

Would the competition at Russia be higher? I suppose there is Anna and Adelina, and So youn is competiting there too right? (I dont see a medal just but the sound of this!)
