State of US Ladies in skating III: 2014-15 Season

SA is the first major international of the season and I think people are predicting a slow start for her. Denis Ten had unremarkable GP results the past two seasons but went on to medal at Worlds and then the Olympics. So it makes sense.

Also Denis Ten has never won a GP. (He's never even medaled at one!) Skate America could be his first medal if things turn out the way that people think.

I guess I'm looking at it from a momentum standpoint. If Gracie isn't able to beat out one of the top three Russians that means her chances at winning the GPF and worlds are pretty low. Her PCS will remain decent but what will happen is other skaters around her will catch up to/pass her...that's where she will lose her edge. She's already on the lower end when it comes to TES. She has the content but her 3-3s aren't nearly as consistent as Elena or Julia's.

I'm pretty sure Gracie will have about a 3 point cushion when it comes to PCS...that's probably a given. However, if she has issues on her jumps, I don't think it will matter. Elena score 72+ in TES in Japan Open, and that was with decent but not crazily excessive +GOE (several +2s but mostly +1s). Gracie will definitely need her 3-3s in both programs and, given that Elena has two 3-3s and Liza T has a 3-3 in the bonus, Gracie will have to be very solid on everything else as well. If she can't produce the content she will likely lose this one on TES despite winning in the PCS.

Saw Courtney Hicks perform at an exhibition at Harvard and her jumps and spins were hands down the best at the show. Worth mentioning...

Go Gracie, Mirai and Samantha! If Gracie does her jumps and stays on her feet, I think she will win. That assumes, of course, that the PCS scoring for Elena R. is realistic. Liza T. is also a factor, but I think a clean Gracie beats a clean Liza.

What are 'unrealistic' PCS for Elena? It's Gracie whos going to get unrealistic PCS. She already seems to get a major Frank Carroll boost to her scores since last season (that IMO makes her overscored herself), and she's having home town advantage.
If she's clean, she's going to win. Now if that should be the case, is IMO another matter (Liza by now has better quality in her jumps, Elena has more difficult content, both are way better and interpreting and performing to music).

Out of the American ladies she's probably the best jumper and on par with the best spinners in the US but the rest of her skating doesn't really appeal to me. I don't see her scoring that well in PCS internationally.

But jumping the highest doesn't equate being the best jumper. Her jumps are so high that she often has a hard time controlling the landing. And personally I don't find her jumps very pleasing to watch despite the wow factor.

Can the USFS/NBC stop trying to make Gracie Gold happen? She has never delivered performances worthy of the hype she gets.

I thought she was gifted the bronze (Park and Cesario were better than her, imo) by inexplicably receiving the highest PCS score for a stiff, expressionless performance.

Even the gifted PCS couldn't get her the gold because she's not delivering the technical content. She used to have great jumps a few seasons ago, but they are basically gone now. The jumps are small, with very hard landings. She can't beat the best ladies in the world with these weak jumps (her 2A, especially, scares me.)

And I am really tired of the Frank Carroll association. He has no idea how to package her. He is trying so hard to mold her into a pretty princess and it's doing nothing for her. Her programs and persona do not feel authentic. Johnny Weir was 100% accurate today when he panned her long program music and stated she needed to skate to music that had more fire.

Gracie beats those two on reputation IMO. Park isn't going to beat Gracie in PCS on US soil, and Cesario isn't well-known. Elena and Liza did not have particularly good LPs and also have awkward moments so I don't mind Gracie having higher PCS than the Russians either.

I think at this point Frank is hurting her more than he is helping. She needs to be totally repackaged away from the robotic princess skating to tired music. Her programs need to feel more authentic. I think she needs to have more contemporary music to give her some originality. If I were her I would get a different coach and choreographer ASAP. Sadly, I think her confidence has dropped to the point that she doesn't have courage to make such a move. Watching Gracie has given me new respect for Michelle Kwan's move away from Carroll.

This. The on-ice packaging of Gracie is not her off-ice personality (Johnny mentioned it today) and thus it comes off very fake and forced.

Could Frank's new position with in the USFS further hinder Gracie's courage to leave Frank?

I don't really care about US ladies and Gracie Gold, but I want to write one thing: this princessy packaging surely must make Russians happy. It doesn't suit her at all and after Caro, Mao and Yuna left she IS (still) the biggest medal threat to them.
For me, she is blond, hot-blooded, sexy young woman caged in and forced to perform the role that completely restrict her on-ice personality, she looks inauthentic there and despite her everlasting smile - unhappy. Yes, she has other problems atm - physical shape, jumps, nerves in competition - just like other skaters (Russians as well), but at least they're training to master the images that suits them and that they believe in.
Watching Gracie sitting there next to Frank Carroll, smiling and acting like a good princess should, I get the impression, she's become fed up with that magnificient golden cage they prepared for her. Actually, I feel sorry for her. :confused2:

I want Russian girls to win against Gracie Gold ofc, but I'd love them to win against authentic, free Gracie Gold even more. :rolleye:

I don't know how she is off-ice. But I feel like the program she had in 2013 and Chicago exh. number were better suited to her.
Who did the choreo of her FS this year?

Lori Nichol. Gracie might just be bad at presenting programs, and if so "pretty princess" might be their best option.

Every times she does her fake smile, I feel like I'm looking at a toothpaste ad commercial or a CoverGirl on a box of Kellogg's cereal.

This girl is believing her own hype. On NBC they did a little segment with her and she was like, "people said I'm the IT girl" Said who?
She's lucky to come in 4th at the Olympics. She wasn't even in the radar for a medal. The medals were meant for Yuna, Carolina, Mao, and maybe the Russians. It was ridiculous to see her randomly grin mid program. Urgh, NBC needs to chill out with this promotion.

Which American Lady is the Best?

The title is pretty self-explanatory, but who is the best American lady now? At the moment, I am leaning towards Polina Edmunds, but I feel as if the USFSA still believes in Ashley Wagner. I think they have hope in Gracie Gold still. They also seem to really like Ashley Cain, who I am not sold on yet.
