Edmunds' edge calls for FS at COC

Anyone know what's up with Polina's edge calls from the CoC FS? She gave up a ton of points and possibly bronze (if you factor in what would have otherwise been more positive GOE). Like Yu Na getting that phantom lip call in her SP, it's kinda weird when a skater who never gets even ! calls gets two lip or two flutz calls out of the blue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzv8GSKqtH4

It's not really a big deal but I wonder if this will cause Polina to switch from a 2-lutz 2-flip layout, which sucks because she's one of the only skaters who attempts both of the hardest triples (save for 3A). I also think she got hosed on the 3Z< but I don't have a closeup so it's a little less certain. But from the slow-mo of the videos, it seems like her 3F should be a clean or ! at worst.

She should for sure swap one of the 3F for a 3Lo. No point in having two flips in there until she is consistently not getting edge calls.

I recall Edmunds (occasionally) getting edge calls on her flip last year, so perhaps it might sometimes be too flat (!) or even a shallow outside (e) edge at times.

The CoC caller was unusually harsh with "e" calls, but only with some skaters. Up to this competition, most edge calls have been "!".

Last year Polina wasn't getting any edge calls at all, now she's getting "e"?. Weird. Yulia WAS getting edge calls all last year, and today she got none!

In fairness Julia had no edge issues today... her issues were far worse, namely she was essentially unable to remember how to do a triple jump.

Yeah, I think that might be a good bet in her next event. Seems silly to get docked so many points for edge calls. Better to do 1 3F and 2 3Los.

Yeah I'm a bit confused as to the standards for the "e" calls. For the first one it's a bad camera angle so it's hard to tell, but for the second one it looks like Polina was pretty clearly on an inside edge at takeoff:

Compare this with her lutz where she was clearly on an outside edge, but which received an under-rotation call that at first glance looks somewhat questionable (but I'd wait until better video to better see how she landed):

I guess maybe an issue is that for both she's pretty clearly on her outside edge as she arcs her edge foot around for the takeoff -- but my understanding is that this is pretty common on both lutz and flips (to be on the outside edge post-glide but just before takeoff -- just that for the flip the edge switches to inside as the free foot's toe pick hits the ice). Isn't the determination of the edge based on the angle when the foot leaves the ice though?

She also did twizzles coming out of her 2A but her GOE's were mostly 1's for that -- either it's easier than I thought to do or it seems like a lot of work for not much gain in points.

Well, she does clearly take from the outside edge, so these calls were fair. It's even more evident in the slow motion. The 3-turn before her combination 3F-1Lo-3S was not shown and so the commentator thought it was a 3Lz at first. The wrong edge was even more obvious in the second flip. She also gains some speed directly before her flips and that is not because she deppens the curve but because she changes it to outside edge, which is another evidence of this flaw in her technique. It's exactly the same as Arakawa's problem with flips.

I checked her WC and Nationals free skates and even though the angles were worse in those videos I think the edges were better before. Back then, she could have received ! but now the e is correct in my opinion. She will most probably change the second flip to loop but still this problem should be adressed.

OT At the Olympics she got a ur on her flip in the long and one on her 3/3ur in the short.

Hmm, just from memory, I think her flip did have an outside edge. And like Cherryy, I seem to remember the commentators thought her flip was a lutz at first.

The UR call may have been a little harsh though.
