2014 Cup of China Ladies Free Skate 11/08

That's what I thought too, except I came across with this in the code of ethics

Since she did not adhere to the rules in CoC..she technically violated e) which leads to P)......

That's very interesting. I wonder if the ISU will suspend her for life or just for the remainder of this season.

If Jason ever pulled such a horribly unsportsmanlike stunt like this, I would be very angry. And very upset. And I probably would not ever be able to look at him in the same way ever again.

Max, on the other hand… :p

Again, I present a fact for you all. And that fact is simply: unless in an exceptional circumstance (such as knocking yourself out on another skater, I guess), attendance at the medal ceremony is COMPULSORY.

And yet…it wasn't, after all.

And you are wrong.

Same here. If it was any of my favourites I would in fact be a million times more upset and disappointed.

I had NO idea what Julia ubers were like, and that is why I keep returning to this thread. I thought the Jason - Jeremy wars were "fun".

We keep returning (or at least, I do) to hear the semblance of an apology from an elite, experienced athlete. It will not go away (at least for me) until I hear it. Now, am I sitting home from work and turning away family and friends until I hear this? No, I am not. But it is interesting to me. Sad, but true.

However, now hear this: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH JULIA AS A SKATER. I have *never* watched Julia skate. Ever. I couldn't pick this red dress of hers out of a lineup. I am not an uber of hers, or of one of her competitors. But I do love how this is "gone", "done", and "over", *if* you're a Julia uber. A time worn rhetorical device, but one that is effective, which is why her fans return to it.

Now back to the Rostelecom GPF picks. Where, by the way, I always put Russian ladies who I have heard of (like Julia) at the top because they seem to be mowing down the competition. Even if I've never seen them skate.

MM, I know that you are providing comic relief with some friendly humor. ;) Love it.

But in all seriousness:

If Jason or Max Aaron ever missed a medal ceremony, I -- as a big fan of both -- would not feel right until the man in question promptly came forward with a few words of public apology.

For example, if Jason had missed the medal ceremony at Skate America, I would have hoped to hear within 24 or 48 hours something like:
"I feel terrible that I missed the ceremony, and I apologize. Congratulations to Tatsuki for his win, and to Nam for his medal."

Ditto for Max re Skate Canada -- with his congrats to Takahito and Javi.

Looks like it was a confusion, for example mixed the time zone. I know Russian sport a bit. And it is just implausible that Julia wanted to make a statement of any kind by not showing up. Only big stars who do not depend on federations like top hockey players can do it. Otherwise, it is strict discipline. The behavior was unprofessional indeed, they are embarassed, and I am sure they were not allowed to make any statements in the press before the Fed and ISU make up their mind on the issue. The chinese post confirms this.

She was emotional after her skate, went to the hotel, and fell asleep. She has apologized to the ISU and the Chinese Skating Association. She has been fined an undisclosed amount of money.

My take on all this put simply. Hold the girl to her contract and if she violated it punish her within reason and however applicable based on her contracts wording at the organizers discretion and also the ISU. She may face some repercussion in terms of fans but honestly I don't think anything is going to change a lot in that regard. I guess in the end its probably too soon for anything. Too soon to expect forgiveness and too soon to break out pitchforks. It is what it is.

You must be some sort of Yulia Uber... as someone who has never watched Yulia skate(I couldn't tell you about her flexibility), we need to break out the pitchforks because that's what else would we do on an internet forum. I need drama in my life.

That's perfect. Note that the hypothetical Jason did not offer any explanation or excuse, nor would we require one.

I am utterly dumbfounded at the legs this story has. There was not this much outrage when 1968 Olympic gold medalist Wolfgang Schwartz was convicted of abducting teenaged girls for the East European sex slave industry.

Yeww... is that even for real?! Hope he got his gold medal taken away by the IOC. What a disgrace!

I think this story got out of hand was because many saw her undeserving of the Silver medal, had she skated better but just not good enough for the Gold, people are likely to be a lot nicer. Also as a reigning OGM, people do hold them to a higher standard, but the higher they build them, the harder people want to pull them down for all sort of reasons. It was a silly but serious mistake, one she should learn from. As for everyone else....forgive and forget and all that. (Ha! Good luck GS)

How many folks on this forum were even born in 1968?
For those of us who were around then, I think a better analogy is the "black power" salute on the medal stand at the 68 Summer Olys. Caused a lot more chatter than 20 people for two days on an internet forum, as well it ought to have. People do take podiums seriously. This problem now looks as though it is being "handled", as it should be, and it will go away.
On to the next

And that's why this story has legs.

More importantly, it's good to hear that Yulia has apologized; just wish she had done it sooner.

I kind of wish the ISU could have gone farther and would have put one of those wheel lock type of devices like the cops put on scofflaw's cars on her favorite pair of knife boots for a couple of days :) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Denver_boot.jpg

FWIW: there was an article yesterday somewhere that said she was going to apologize before the gala. I think they just lumped todays news into the story with minimal details.

ISU made a decision to impose a fine on Julia for not attending the ceremony, the amount of fine is not disclosed

Another article also added that she appologised to the head of the Chinese Fed and the ISU.

I deleted a lengthy post trying to add this to it. :bang:

Thx to everyone for the updates. Appreciate the news re the apology and the fine.

(Sorry about your lost post, Sam-S. :ohwell:)

Since she has accepted her punishment and apologized to the federation and ISU, I will forgive her and hope that she doesn't do it again, I don't think she's an inherently bad person, no need for pitchforks

Being fined was expected, as it was written in rules and regulations in CoC. Was Yulia fined from ISU or just from CoC/Chinese federation? I can't read Russian.....

Who says I don't love a good scandal? Here's a bare-bones version of the Wolfgang Schwartz story from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Schwarz

Looks like his...er..."other" career didn't start until well after 1968. There's also a brief story about it on the Skate Guard blog (5/28/2013); the post contains some other interesting FS history, too.

ISU was involved and levied the fine. She apologized to the head of the Chinese fed and attended the gala.
