Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Safe travels to everyone going to Barcelona for the GPF.
I eagerly await all reports back. I cannot beleive this thread has gotten so large for all of us Yuzu lovers, but I am very grateful that it has!
I cannot wait to see what he will break out for us at the GPF or what he will wear. As long as he is healthy, happy and does his best, I could care less about medals.

Here's some article about sales of his photobook, there's only one pharagrah talking about him though. It compares with some other books and says something about rankings (?) I think, can someone please translate this short excerpt? Thank you ^^

It's about a ranking of book sales in Japan (18 Nov. 2013 - 16 Nov. 2014)

As to the photo books, the top 3 are books of magnificent landscapes of the world or Japan.

And other books (of persons) are all AKB (Japanese idol group) related ones, except Yuzuru's photo book (8th; derived from the context).

It seems only Yuzuru was capable of competing AKB

Safe travels for those going to Barcelona! Rink temperature really varies; I was freezing at Skate Canada, had to wear my gloves even, but at Cup of China it wasn't as bad. Dress in layers is probably my best suggestions. ;)

I need some help from out lovely Japanese posters as well! From that pre-gala NHK interview with Oda-san and the three Japanese men, Hanyu-san mentioned his food of choice is rice. Then he said something about bring rice to eat with some hot water(?) before competition. Oda-san asked "from jar?" and he said"impossible from jar, but from pack..." Is this correct? I don't really understand what he meant. Does he just mean cooked rice ? Thanks!

Since I'm pretty much the only one who keeps the media thread going I just wanted to let you know that I'll be gone during GPF next week. Don't know yet if I'll go through the gazillion of pages I expect to appear during that time ;)

They are having fun.

Can't get high quality clips of NBC yet, but if you'd like to hear from Tracy, it's here and here.

I can't follow the thread fully. Has anyone posted Brian's interview?

from the vid
*he said that what he felt was not uncertainty, it was mistrust. He couldnt trust himself, but not as negative as fear.
*he felt split inside and didnt know what to do about it.
*the moment of the collision came back and said he was scared and wanted to flee
*he said that he could not stop crying in the dressing room as he thought about what he must do next.

Thanks panda_wei for uploading the clip

Yuzu's HD version , I apologize if it has already been posted .Thanks to the uploader!
It seems Yuzu is challanging Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation at 4:30

I've found this article which says that poor Yuzu will not like to see Brian's training plans.

A bit random but yuzuru's picture from nhk gala was featured on BBC's Day in pictures for 1 December 2014

Poster boy for blood donation, was this during the summer ?

Can Japanese or Chinese poster help me with this news. It seems they are talking about JSF and Yuzuru relationship.
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20141203-00000012-nkgendai-spo

I think the article is using Yuzuru's forced participation in his Grand Prix events as an example to illustrate bad treatment of athletes in Japan. I'm Chinese so that was just roughly what I could tell from the Chinese characters lol but I may be wrong.

Yes, you are right. This article indicates that Yuzuru's participation in the two competitions are forced by the feudal system existed in Japanese sports field, like Senpai-Kohai relationship. Also, the motive of JSF and Japnese media who desparately need a star, as Daisuke and others retired, and Mao is not performing this season.
And the article concludes that Japanese promissing athletes should go aboroad, not training in Japan.

I'm not going to deny the above totally, but still there are so many good systems to train young athletes in Japan. Besides, not all of them can afford to be trained abroad. And it is Yuzuru who decided to participate.

In any case, don't take this article too seriously. Gendai is one of the infamous gossip media in Japan.

From what I could string up from the kanji & hiragana I could read; it says that after the retirement of the more popular members of Team Japan (Miki, Dai, Akko [my poor Nobu's not even mentioned]) and Mao's year off the bulk of the task to maintain figure skating's popularity in the country and to keep the money from the sponsors coming lies with Yuzu.

It also discussed and gave examples of those in power "bullying" the athletes (i.e Hashimoto "harassing" Dai, punishing student athletes by making them eat bugs or drink kerosene, the suicide of the basketball captain who was slapped in the face by their coach to toughen them up). That sports is Japan is guided by the archaic code of absolute obedience to authority that was rooted in their military ways. [Hopefully someday JSF will experience Yuzu's "He would hear none of it" moments, unless Shizuka/Dai/Mao replaces everyone before that time comes]

The last couple of paragraphs says that if parents wants their kids to become professional athletes, sending them out of Japan is the best solution (i.e Kei Nishikori) where they could grow and be taken care of because being an athlete in Japan sucks [that is me paraphrasing because my brain reached it's quota].

And now, for another pointless. Yuzu's eye fluttering which caused me to spill coffee on my dress. My brother's too old for this so I'm going to teach my nephew to do it.

Aah, SuzyQ, already posted a summary. In any case, although I agree with how the athletes are treated, it was Yuzu's decision and as a fan even if I don't agree with it; all I can give him is my trust that he knows his body and abilities better and that in times like this my support matters to him.

I uploaded Yuzu's NHK Trophy FS performance broadcasted by NBC & CBC in case anyone is interested. Also a short clip of Tracy Wilson reporting on Yuzu's state of mind after the SP. The last 10 seconds of the clip is backstage scene of Yuzu before his LP performance (looking very serious).

And here is a more reliable article I assume

^Really appreciate the time and effort you put in in updating this thread, Pamina. I also apologize for not always posting the media links in my Yuzuru fanfest thread posts here, thus adding to your work. I'll try to do better. Have a safe trip!

Thank you, I appreciate it ;) but you really don't cause me all that much work if you don't post your links here. I follow the other thread anyway, save the quotes with links in a word document and then post them here whenever it seems appropriate. This wasn't meant so much as a complaint and more like an "FYI" for the people who only have time to look at the media thread.

About the rice…
He says that rice is the food of life for Japanese people. Oda strongly agrees
He also says that when he goes abroad for competitions he takes uncooked dry rice with him and boils it in hot water
Oda says that bread is delicious but that before competitions he also wants to eat rice.
Hanyu then says that when he is at a foreign competition and there is only bread to eat he starts to cry. This happened to him on his first foreign competition so now he always takes rice with him.
Oda asks him if he takes the cooked rice balls with him and Hanyu replies that he takes it in the natural form. Oda makes a joke saying like on the plant? Hanyu says that’s impossible and that the rice is in a sealed bag (ie. The way people normally buy bags of rice from the shops.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks channah! Wow I feel him because he's just like me  But does he mean he only eats rice when he's overseas? Or did I miss out something? He can't possibly be eating only rice right?

I think Yuzuru (like many Asians) eats rice everyday. So when overseas, he still wants to eat rice. I understand this completely. I'm American, but ate rice everyday in my parents house. My daughter is in college now, but her comfort food is rice and miso soup. Especially during competition (under stress) rice would be important! Of course he must eat other things too, like chocolate & eggs.

I wonder if the Japanese skaters bring a small rice cooker along with the bag of rice - no wonder their suitcases are so large.

Thank you, that was interesting. Poor Yuzu, having only bread to eat while being abroad and competing. Can't imagine how hard it must have been for him.

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean that there was only bread to eat but rather that rice wasn't available. He says that rice is the food of life so when he can't have it then he cries. And to make sure it is always available to him he brings his own and cooks it himself. Also he doesn't only eat rice, but rice is a staple part of the diet he has.
Hope that clears it up.

Bonesfan is correct too, saying that he eats other things, not just rice.

When I get home from work tonight I'll do a full translation of the 15 min segment with the three athletes and Oda.

hello :)
this is my first time posting in this thread, although I've become a silent reader for quite some time :D
I noticed Yuzuru because he won gold medal in Sochi, the first video of his skating that I watched is the SP in Sochi, the little smile at the beginning, that's when he stole my heart until now XD
Parisienne Walkways will always be my favorite SP, to see him smiling and flirting while skating is the best feeling haha..
Does any of you plan to celebrate Yuzu's birthday? maybe buy some cakes and eat with fellow Yuzu fans? :)
At times like these I wish he has social medias so I can say happy birthday to him directly :o:
