Mao Asada

Maybe this has already been posted, but Rosewood at fsuniverse made a post saying that the famous photo of Mao crying tears of bittersweet joy from the Sochi long program had won the news photo of the year award as announced by the the popular newspaper Mainichi-shinbun.

It is named:
"A Tear on the ice"

Rosewood said that the winning photo is "on the cover of the latest issue of a Japanese popular sports photo magazine." The most recent issue is entitled "The face of 2014".

I saw that Asahi Shinbun website and it moved me so deeply while I was reading her comments and looking at the photos of her Sochi performance. That performance to me spans the full range of human expression: from sorrow to jubilation with redemption balanced delicately somewhere in between. I don't know how someone could do that while skating, but somehow Mao channeled all her feelings about life in four minutes time, so that we all had a chance to see the sensitivity, complexity and resolve she carries deep inside.

I found this relatively old interview of Mao when she was 16 at the time of Worlds 2007. She is so cute here. She is also asked some really unusual questions. It has subtitles in English. It's in two parts.

Greetings to all,

This is my first post on this forum. I do this at the behest of a most articulate and discerning fan from another forum. His contentions are: that Mao's performances and achievements should be known to as many people as possible globally, that she truly is the greatest figure skater of all time. I whole heartedly agree.

I admire this girl for her dedication, aestheticism and fierce Samurai-like discipline
in achieving her goal; perfection on the ice. Her artistic performances, (a physical moving meditation), ensnares audiences who witness her acts and wakes a slumbering spirit in them and graces it with an elevated awareness, newer eyes to see hidden beauties in the world. It seems the peaks of her achievements were the inception of my awakening. This is what she has done for me and where she has taken me.

Mao embodies the concepts of Shibumi.

Welcome to the forum ShibumiMao. The word SHibumi means subtle and unobtrusive beauty, doesn't it? I really love your phrase "a physical moving mediation." It also suggests an emotional impact that is moving. In addition, I like the phrase "a slumbering spirit in them" compared to "grace and elevated awareness" because not only is slumbering the opposite of elevated awareness but the phrase lumbering movement is the opposite of graceful movement.

I look forward to your next post.

I watch Mao's performance as if I am eavesdropping on an artist painting a masterpiece on an icy canvas with their balletic movements, inducing a soothing sense of meditation that draws me in slowly and once my attention is captured doesn't let go. Then, tears begin to flow because of the supreme sense of transcendent beauty she displays, as she unveils the great depths of her sensitive soul. I hope you post a lot and often.

she's soo cute

She also mentioned that she will participate in some ice show next year. she didn't comment about her future in competition though.

aww  I can't wait to see her programs when she participates in the ice shows! I hope they're new ones and not ones that she has already done, because I would really love to see her do one that I haven't seen :)

I want to see her back in competition, but I don't know if it's wishful thinking or not lol.

You know I think Lori said that Mao was born to skate to Chopin. Mao is the most beautiful skater of the last quad. She had up and downs but no one makng a fair assessment can deny the beauty of her blade. Breathtaking:love:

Minze 2001-Here is an article that talks about Lori Nichol's view of Mao's skating to Chopin and why she loves Mao's skating. It also talks about her views of Daisuke.

I would love to see Mao back in competition too. I often don't like how she is scored, but it often brings out the best in her performances, though I think she is also the best at exhibitions. I still dream of seeing her skate to Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto and some traditional Japanese music. What music would you like to see her skate to?

I'll like to see her come back competitively, but I just wonder how the new edge rules and underrotation rules will affect her scoring... I love her exhibitions! I think she could always do more exhibitions like the Mary poppins one she did at 2012 GPF, like a fun and upbeat one, though I would also love to see her skate to something really lyrical. Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto is actually on my list of music that I would like Mao to skate to haha. I think she would do well with it! And i was just thinking about Yuna's Arirang and was hoping that maybe someone from team Japan could also do a homage to Japan with traditional Japanese music

Actually I would like to see Mao skate to the 4th movement of Dvorak's 8th symphony. It's slow at some parts and then it gets faster and more intense (would be great for a step sequence). I find it weird how no one ever chose that particular movement for a competitive program because I think it'll fit so well  And maybe Liszt's La Campanella , Chopin's Tristesse etude, and Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.

Edit: Think she did Tristesse before but apparently it was a version with vocals for an exhibition?

Great post and you wrote it so fast with so many good links! The song based on Tristesse is "So Deep is the Night" which Mao skated to as her exhibition during her 2007 / 2008 season. I love her hair and deep blue outfit during that program. We talked a lot about that a few pages back. Great program.

My favorite exhibitions by Mao are Caprice and Por Una Cabeza, but I really like them all. I want her to bring back her spiral sequences from these programs. But, I know she's not 19 anymore, so it may be too tough.

First impressions on the ones you mentioned. La Campanella sounds perfect for Mao, but wow that would be fast. I like the Pastoral symphony a lot, and it has some good dramatic parts for step sequences. But, I need to listen to the Dvorak more to become more familiar with it.

I agree with you on the new edge rules and ur rules. I don't really look at figure skating in terms of scores though. Another system could have been created that would give more points to other qualities like spins, spirals, steps, line, extensions and beauty of air position, and Mao would have won a lot more. Mao fit in well with the system well sometimes, but I often like it better when she doesn't. Like the beauty of her delayed jump rotation that she used to have. That's what makes her so unique.
