State of the U.S. Men's Figure Skating for 2014-15

Sad news for Ricky,, I just saw a post on fb about the death of Jeremy's father.

Sorry to learn the above. Praying for the healing of Ricky's mom and the eternal repose of Jeremy's dad.

Understandable if Ricky and Jeremy are thinking not just of skating right now.

Bad news from all sides for these guys.
Is it possible that Jeremy will still go to Nationals?

I would say it is certainly possible if he wants to. He still has about two weeks. Colorado does have training facilities. It is more a matter of if he will want to or not. That is of course a personal decision for him to make.

I'm fairly sure Jeremy is not even thinking about Nationals right now.

My thoughts with both Ricky and Jeremy and their families.

A Nats preview of the men's discipline by Nick McCarvel is at the link below.
Mostly about Jason Brown.
One quote from Nathan Chen + one from Ryan Bradley -- who picks Abbott as the winner.
A "Who's Who" listing of the top contenders.

Jason Brown learning to like his role as a favorite

Despite death in the family, @jeremyabbottpcf set to compete at #NC2015 per his coach Yuka Sato

I understand it must have been a very difficult decision to make, but at the same time, I do remember Jeremy mentioning how his father has attended many of his competitions. I think a couple of years ago, Jeremy's father fainted while he was performing his LP, and on his way to another National title. I am sure Jeremy would like to dedicate this year's National Championship skates to his father.... :'( It's such a sad thought to be put into such a situation.

I believe you are confused.
Jeremy's stepfather ("still very much alive," to quote Jeremy's tweet from Jan 8) is known for attending competitions -- and he is the one who fainted. Not Jeremy's father, whom Jeremy just lost.

You are correct golden411, previous poster has confused Jeremy's stepfather who had a medical issue at 2012 nationals. He is the man that shouts from the audience before Jeremy skates. Abbott's biological father passed away from complications of Parkinson's and other illnesses late last week. I presume that Jeremy is competing at Nationals regardless, because that's what his father would want.

The whole family is in my prayers.

Thx, IcyEdges.

Is it safe to assume that this photo shows Jeremy with his late father?

Anyway, I see that J's father will be laid to rest on Saturday, per J's mother (now married to J's stepfather).

And I agree that J's decision to go forward with skating at Nationals is what his father would have wanted.

(BTW, sorry, I should not have repeated the word "fainted" re J's stepfather. I remembered a medical issue, although not what exactly it was.)

Yes, that's Jeremy's father, Danny with him in that photo. Here's a photo of them together last June per Jeremy's instagram account. http://instagram.com/p/pXPVj9G8B8/?modal=true

Per the "fainting" reference and his step-father. He did black out and have something similar to seizures.

From what I can see behind the 'stache, glasses, etc., Jeremy looks a lot like his dad - same cheeks, nose, and chin.

IMHO, Jeremy's sister looks more like their father and Jeremy looks more like his mother.

:hijacked: Are we able to get back on topic now?

As someone from Western Colorado. . . . I know exactly what dad's shirt is trying to depict and where that view is. It's Mt. Garfield and the Grand Mesa. His shirt is basically depicting the view from my house growing up.

Becki, pls forgive my ignorance -- turns out that part of your post was correct.

From icenetwork:
Our condolences to Jeremy Abbott and his sister Gwen on the death of their father Danny, who died Jan. 8 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Danny attended the U.S. championships to watch Jeremy compete every year from 2005-13....

My apologies to Jeremy's father and family ... and to Becki.

ETA, so .... both Jeremy's father and stepfather have attended J's competitions year after year.

Sorry to read that about Jeremy. I hope he still skates. Parkinson's is a long, drawn-out disease, so this couldnt' have really come as a shocker. My ex's father died from Parkinson's and it was heartbreaking to see him worsen. You almost wished a peaceful death for him he was suffering so badly. May he skate and honor his father with two heartwarming programs.

Does this mean we shall not hear that voice boom out "Go, Alexander" this year? Maybe the crowd could arrange something, then. An all-together shout before Jeremy skates.
