Tatsuki Machida

Since I was the one who posted this rumor back in June 2014
Very important news!

According to reports from Japanese fans on twitter, Tatsuki has changed his mind and is continuing his career until Pyeongchang Olympics.
Phillip Mills is doing the choreography for his SP.

I happened to stumble over some actual sources to back that up so I think it's fair to clarify. On July 29th Tatsuki visited the mayor of Hiroshima and told him he was working on a program that was better than Firebird. He then told him he planned to continue his competitive career one step at a time and he wanted to work hard and give his best year by year because he also had the Pyeongchang Olympics in mind as final target.

I think Tatsuki at that time really thought he could combine studies and skating. And being a student of literature, I am sure he is familiar with this quote from Emerson, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds..." ;)

He is entitled to change his mind and retire when did. But oh, he broke so many skating fans' hearts in the process, including mine. I just know I shall not see his like again.

After watching Casablanca, Celos, Happy Feet, and Dark Eyes (EX):

Already a distinct improvement over his 2008 performances, imo. There is a real intensity to his skating, especially in Casablanca and Celos. His basic skating also seems better: his crossovers are more powerful, and he seems a lot steadier during one-foot segments. He doesn't emote with his face quite as well as he does today, but he conveys the music with his body movements--most notably with how he thrust out his arms in the Celos step sequences. I guess some people would call him "too dramatic" again (), but I love it.

It's interesting you see Casablanca as the birth of current-Tatsuki. In my (relatively ignorant) eyes, Celos looks like the start of Diva Machida :) It was also my favourite performance of the four. Casablanca, for me, was a program with more old school charm (the long delay until the second 3A, the "slow section").

I didn't know what to expect for Happy Feet music, but I think he captured the right mood. Especially with the straight line step sequence. It's wonderful that he took the opportunity to do steps like that, which couldn't be done in competition with the stifling 2006-2010 rules. I was also impressed by the steps in Dark Eyes--he moves very quickly, considering the content in the steps.

Yes, he's come a long way with his skating - both from a technical and artistic point of view. He's always been a musical skater though, even without the rest of the qualities he has today. His technique wasn't necessarily bad either, his jumps were pretty good when he hit them. About Find Love - he might have been a bit of an Enigma fan since he was also using a song by Enigma for his SP (Push The Limits). But that and his FS The Red Violin were the programs that got him the Junior National title and a participation at the Junior Worlds.
I think his jump technique looked good even in the earliest videos (that triple lutz in Find Love was +3 worthy!) He didn't have a quad yet, true, and he sometimes made silly errors like doubling jumps, but his technique seems like a strong base from which he built his later success. I see improvements mainly in artistry and SS. And, er, camel spin :hopelessness:

He wouldn't be the first person to take on more projects than he could handle. I'm sure he thought he could make it work at the time. It's a shame things didn't turn out that way... I'm still trying to figure out how a skater like Tatsuki only went to one World Championships (and came within fractions of a point to winning!)

I believe because Japan has so many good skaters such Daisuke, Kozuka and Oda who dominated between 2006 to 2012. Even though Machida started competing since 2003 (started junior level) his breakout season was 2012/2013, and when he surpassed Dai, Kozuka and Oda at Nationals in 2013 thus gained berth to Olympic and World. And at World he gave it all out :agree:. I think this was when more fans take notice him plus also because retirement of other senior skaters.

I love that moment, you can tell he had been waiting to give that kind of performance at the Nationals his whole life. What's even more impressive is the fact that he delivered an equally strong and clean FS the next day and put a big distance between him and the rest of the field so that the federation would have no way to replace him. He was amazing.

Although I still need a little more time to fall in love with the firebird program :) (I can't get over this season's amazing free program, so wanted to see him complete so badly), I believe that repeating it might give him a confidence and stable consistency on his jumps. Whenever he stumbled with East of Eden such as GPF and Olympics, the firebird greatly salvaged him leaping from 6th to 4th at GPF, and from 11th to 5th. If he didn't fall at all in the FP, he might have worn a bronze medal around his neck at Olympics though.

When I saw the performance for the first time, I was so curious about what is the story of the original folklore and how the bird is described in the original ballet. I had never had a chance to experience the works except the music, so just assumed those from his performance. It was interesting to watch the dramatic transformation from almost a quite but emotionless bird at first (so some misapprehended him who came out of nowhere, as a mere jumper without artistry during the last season ) to a flamboyant and energetic soul roaring like a tiger with a very explosive face as if he indeed became the firebird reincarnated from a burning fire. I think he delivered the program quite well at the Olympics and was a good storyteller in this regard.

Not sure if I should post this at all but oh well I think it's something nice and we all need something positive. There's a rumor going around among Japanese fans on twitter that Tatsuki is dating Haruka Imai. When I logged in yesterday people were retweeting a bunch of pics of Tatsuki and Haruka (they have since been deleted because apparently they were leaked from Haruka's private facebook account) so I searched around and it looks like this information is not necessarily new. The rumor has been floating around since 2012-2013 and it resurfaced in April 2014 when Tatsuki visited Niigata (Haruka's hometown) and went to her hair stylist (the stylist actually posted pics on his instagram back then). The rumors got stronger over the summer when Haruka started working with Phillip Mills and traveled with Tatsuki to the US and back several times and then they somehow got the same GP assignments.

Now I've seen the leaked pics and I'm pretty sure they are close friends for starts. The dating rumors are to be taken with a grain of salt but I thought it was cute so I shared the story. Haruka is one of my favorite female skaters so it was nice to see they get along very well.

Yes, I've heard that rumors but didn't know the stories in detail, so thank you for the heads up. It is not strange to speculate that they are close friends, and even possibly lovers given that people saw them together a lot and her commission to Mills for her programs could've been affected by Tatsuki.

However, I was foolish enough to think that he could change his mind on retirement as reading your post until the passage, "There's a rumor going around among Japanese fans on twitter that Tatsuki is "... :hopelessness:

Haruka looks like a sweet person, so they could be a good partner to each other.

Oops! Sorry about that :hopelessness: I admit I am as foolish when it comes to this and my naive side still hopes for a comeback. Just for reference though, when Dai retired he said "I will also face this decision in the future, and it's a very difficult decision to take - but there's always an option to come back."

Thanks for the comforting words. I really wish at least see him around ice links like working on some ice shows, or choreography during his school vacations. His talents are so immense not to be wasted.

He used to say he wanted to become a show director / choreographer after his retirement. I expect him to attend Fantasy On Ice and/or Prince Ice World this summer.

Ha, earlier in this thread I was wondering who among the female TJ members should partner Tatsuki, and thought Satoko would be a good match though there is a bit of an age gap I must admit. ;) I missed out on Haruka. If true, I will be pleased for both of them. Having the same hair stylist is a good omen. Thanks for keeping us posted on this, ionap.

I understand. I think Icekiwi may be on to something when she/he posted to the effect that the Tatsuki's abrupt retirement is like a tragic love story (alluding to his SP's theme) between him and his fans who are now feeling bereft. Part of that is hoping against hope that he may still come back to compete.

I admit they look great together. These are not Haruka's private pics so I think it's ok to post them here.

yes they look good together, i really like her, she seems so elegant, humble, kind, if its true then i wish them happiness, i hope she will bloom like tatsuki did cause i think she has many good qualities, who knows maybe tatsuki might even make program for her :yay:

According to some info I've seen on twitter (bless all those Japanese fans ) the graduation ceremony at Kansai University will take place on March 20th and it will be streamed live. This means we're most likely going to see Tatsuki proudly wearing his academic dress. ;)

In a way I guess both Celos and Casablanca were a pair of programs that showed the birth of "Diva Machida". What made me think Casablanca was closer to Tatsuki of today was his intense interpretation; he really seemed into it. Like right after the 3F at around 3:25 in that video for instance. Feelings, intensity, drama

Happy Feet was a funny and cute program and probably a good example that he is able to have some fun on the ice. It always makes me smile whenever I watch it. Nebelhorn 2010 was actually a competition he won and he was skating as the champ. I didn't post this video in that list but this is his Nebelhorn FS, "Legends Of The Fall" choreographed by Nanami Abe. He landed an effortless, clean 4T!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCb5cjTDviI

As for Dark Eyes he also kept that for 2 seasons in a row and 4CC 2012 was probably his best effort at performing that program - by that time he learned to emote with his face a bit more.

I think his jump technique looked good even in the earliest videos (that triple lutz in Find Love was +3 worthy!) I agree, his technique really had a strong base (and most of the errors he made were almost always due to mental factors :slink:). As for the lutz, that's probably my favorite jump of his because you see a lot of skaters cheating and taking off from a straight edge to almost inside edge but he always deepens the outside edge when he reaches back for the pick and counterrotates.

He used to say he wanted to become a show director / choreographer after his retirement. I expect him to attend Fantasy On Ice and/or Prince Ice World this summer.

I really hope so.

Tatsuki will be awarded the 58th Chugoku Sports Award for his outstanding achievements in 2014.

There's some talk about a ceremony being organized but nothing official so far.

Also, Tatsuki and Haruka Imai are featured in the newest issue of French magazine Patinage

Congratulations Tatsuki!

Can't help but notice that the pictures of Tatsuki and Haruka are wonderfully well-matched!

Thanks ionap for the update.

Very beautiful pics indeed ;) I suppose those are the ones that are featured inside the magazine. Still very grateful to the Trophee Eric Bompard organizers for inviting Haruka to the gala to skate her lovely Defying Gravity EX.
