Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

Ohman :( would she get even a 4cc? Sigh, why why why I guess Mirai's luck is pretty much hiding in some far away corner of the world...

Polina would probably go to Worlds because Karen is too young. I am wondering if maybe Courtney, Samantha and Mira would be sent to 4CC?

I think this year it's likely that at least one of Ash, Polina, Gracie are sent to 4CCs. Even if not, Bell is a real possibility. I have not much hope for the rest of Mirai's season. I am pretty sure it is over.

I do hope she will be beck strong next season though!!

I'm sympathetic, just not the way many here are. I think she needs to talk to someone about her self-sabotaging. There is a pattern here.

I don't agree in this case. If you watch in slow mo what happened, it is VERY obvious that in this case, it was truly what could only be described as a freak accident. Whether she could have IN HINDSIGHT prevented what happened, the fact is that IN REAL TIME, she was skating with good speed, doing some basic crossovers to gain more, close to the boards but with what should have been enough room. It wasn't, her skate banged the boards, and she fell.

While I am a huge Mirai fan, I honestly do believe I'd be saying the same thing whoever this happened to or if I disliked Mirai. In fact, liking Mirai as I do, it's actually harder for me to accept it was a freak accident that did her in- it would be easier for me to accept her falling and URing all over the place.

A lot of skaters seemed to have trouble with skating too close to the boards this comp. IIRC, it was what forced Gracie to double her combo in the SP and a couple of the lower placed girls ran afoul, as well. It seems the rink was just an odd size for what people were used to.

I totally disagree. What is the pattern? Did she sabotage herself last year when she won bronze but got left off the Olympic team? Or in her short program? Mirai is just the unluckiest skater. She was too young for her first trip to Worlds and the skaters who went in later years, like Rachael and Alyssa, couldn't regain three spots. Then, when they finally had three spots, she gets left off the team. Also, when she was at her peak in terms of age and experience, her coach moved two and half hours away and she had to find someone new close to her home. Now this.

her skater career is really a roller coaster ride.
:drama:
more lows than highs

While it is hard and maybe mean to say - all the ladies had to skate in this small rink. Truly it was a horrible, unlucky and painfall fall for Mirai. But before we worry about if she gets to go to 4cc's or a spot on the American team - my big concern is - is she okay? Did she get a major injury? Forget 4cc's or even worlds how is she!!!??!!! She loses even more funding with this placement is my understanding. I know she said she was continuing but I guess we'll see. Just heartbreaking!

Thank you for all the support today. I aggravated an old bone contusion and strained my hamstring. Other than that, my knee is intact!
From Mirai's twitter.

It's so hard being a Mirai fan. So much heartbreak involved.

Mirai has had more lows then highs but that's mainly her own fault. For years she looked like she didn't give a damn, just coasting off the natural talent that she made no real attempt to build on.

She deserved to be left off the Olympic team. You can't sleep walk through a majority of the competitions between Olympics and then suddenly flip the switch at nationals the Olympic year and expect to be put on the team. Her competitive history for 3.5 years prior to 2014 nationals said no way. Especially over a skater who worked her *** off on every competition and pretty much carried the torch for the country. Pretty much every other sport would probably have done the exact same decision the USFSA did last year. Only in Figure Skating would it be considered a scandal.

She had her chances for 5 years and she threw them away. She had the perfect chance at last 4 continents and all of this season to show the USFSA that leaving her off the Olympic team was a mistake but she didn't. She went straight back to her sleeping walking half hearted performances.

This nationals was pretty much the first time you could consider it bad luck. Everything else prior to tonight was self inflicted.

I don't think anyone's arguing with you. She did coast for a while. But is it fair to say it's all her fault when Rachael decided to skate injured at Worlds, taking a spot which should have been Mirai's? She was horribly sick last year at 4cc's, probably depressed beyond belief too.

Her efforts have not been in vain. Until she caught the board with her blade, she was looking fantastic. Heck, rink size seemed to be a problem in every discipline - Kayne/O'Shae in pairs, Aldridge/Eaton in dance, many of the men... Heck, Polina, Gracie, Leah Keiser, Mariah Bell... They all got very close to the boards multiple times, enough that I noticed it very easily.

I truly do believe that she loves skating, and I also think that she's working insanely hard.

My issue wasn't even Ashley. It was sending Polina, who had no body of work on the senior circut, over Mirai. Pick - podium trio or experienced trio? There was something fishy about that entire thing. But even now, that's not what people are arguing. It's just disappointing to see someone so talented and hardworking constantly get pushed back down every time they almost reach the top.

Seriously? Polina has no body of work? Skating in the Olympics doesn't count? I think Mirai has made her bed. I felt badly for her tonite but would not have considered sending her anywhere over Polina. Technically there is no comparison. I will give Mirai the nod on presentation but her "body of work" is sketchy and inconsistent and, as of tonite, unlucky. But I imagine this thread will go another 79 pages while we discuss Mirai's future! Personally I really don't think she has one in figure skating.

Interesting. So now they're saying that an MRI revealed a cartilage contusion in Mirai's left knee last month, and that was the knee she banged up tonight. Ouch. I was looking forward to seeing how much she had improved/how many jumps she could get ratified tonight. I will not use this as an opportunity to dump on her. I hope she keeps going.

How I feel exactly, and at times, figure skating is just so hard - luck in peaking the right moment having things go your way...
Happens to many in figure skating, but as a fan I get a heart break every time...

Sigh, well the sad? thing is I feel this IS madame butterfly, with the beautiful butterfly, her hopes and dreams just crumbling away from her. It's sad, it's painful and man, tears for yet another reason.

I think it was in reference to pre-sochi, when they were picking team USA for the olympics. Then Polina had only junior GP/GPF experience.

But all that's in the past, Mirai's CV is defintely not as impressive as a lot of others, but post 2010 there were sparks, and throughout her 2008-2013 career there were times when she did well but the wind didn't blow in her favour as fleeting mentioned.

I have no idea what she can rectify now, with so many bumps and people/tech callers losing faith in her. But I guess only time will tell what happens! Still enjoying watching her and hope whatever happens there is a happy outcome for her!

Poor Mirai. "If if weren't for hard luck she'd have no luck at all."

Oh please! The driver about whom Martin Brundle uttered this immortal quote would show Mirai that she doesn't know the meaning of the word bad luck!

I would think the 4CC team would be the 3 top finishers like in previous years though i think Karen is to young so it would be Polina going instead.
