I heard that Gold is practicing the 3A and there is a video. Do you know anything about it?
Thanks. So it's not a new video, then. Do we know how is it going now?
Am I the only one who noticed that the guy holding the fishing rod is clearly helping keep Gracie in the air. It's not that uncommon and I see it a lot in person when coaches go fishing around my rinks but it is very apparent that he is helping her achieve extra air time. Regardless....it looks pretty good but her 2a is already not that great so I'm not expecting anything to come of this. She was a much better jumper back then anyway.
I agree Ashley is skating the best she's ever skated right now, and has a very good shot at the podium (...maybe even the win, but hopefully she doesn't read this; she does better with underdog status).Agreed. Ashley is (at the moment) better than she has ever been, and the competition is the weakest it has been in 8 years with Adelina, Carolina, Mao, and Yuna out. In fact, no World or Olympic singles ladies medalists will compete. If one of Ashley or Gracie doesn't medal, it will be a huge missed opportunity.
I thought helping was the point of the pole. Isn't part of the point so the skater can get a feel for it and figure out what they need to change. It seems that even with the support, you still could get a feel for how high you need to be, how fast you need to be, how far you fall from the apex to landing, etc. Basically even with help, I would think a skater could get some idea of what they need to change/work on.
I don't think we have heard anything. I don't think it is a high priority right now.
I agree Ashley is skating the best she's ever skated right now, and has a very good shot at the podium (...maybe even the win,
Frankly it has been that way for almost 2 full Olympic cycles. Hence why the U.S. has been missing from the podium in 8 years.
But this is one of their best chances yet. In the past they've found some way to blow it so I'm not getting my hopes up, but at least the possibility is there. I guess what's different about this round is that for the first time we have TWO possible contenders so the chances are a bit better. Both Gold and Wagner (independently) have come up short at past Worlds, hopefully fate doesn't strike again.
Well...4CC update:
Edmunds probably had the competition of her life to win - Gold, the favorite, failed to even medal(!!!)...and Cesario, despite solid skating, still stuck in the middle of the pack, not making much headway.
She will not medal at Worlds this year.
I don't know that I would say that. Gracie bombed big time, and Satoko had uncharacteristic mistakes. Even Polina put it best in her interview afterwards: "I'm very happy that I ended up being a champion today."
She will not medal at Worlds this year. But great job for Polina for pulling out a win tonight.
______________Just a quick look at their competitive records (major events):
OTP = Off The Podium (or out of the top 3 to be exact)
Length of career
Cohen: 2000-2006 (7 seasons total - not counting 2010 as she only did one event)
Wagner: 2008-present (7 seasons total - currently competing in her 8th season)
Both have had the same amount of time on the senior circuit! In fact, Wagner's career will be longer if/when she gets through Worlds.
Grand Prix
Cohen: 5 seasons, 11 competitions total (5 titles, 2 silver, 1 bronze, 3 OTP - 8 medals in all)
Wagner: 8 seasons, 16 competitions total (3 titles, 3 silver, 5 bronze, 5 OTP - 11 medals in all)
Interesting that despite a longer career on the GP circuit, Wagner does not have the gold medal haul that Cohen had. Wagner does have more overall medals, however.
If you do it by percentage, Cohen medaled at 73% of her events vs. Wagner's 69%. But Cohen won 45% of her GP events, a fairly impressive stat - compared to Wagner who won 19% of her GP events.
GPF
Cohen: 2 appearances (1 title, 1 silver)
Wagner: 3 appearances (1 silver, 2 bronze)
Wagner has qualified for 3 vs. Cohen's 2, but Wagner has never won GPF (Cohen was never out of the top 2). Impressive for both is that they have medaled in all the GPFs they've qualified for.
Nationals (not counting WDs or non-senior appearances)
Cohen: 7 appearances (1 title, 4 silvers, 1 bronze, 1 OTP)
Wagner: 8 appearances (3 titles, 2 bronze, 3 OTP)
Wagner has more gold medals, but Cohen has more medals in general (6* vs. 5*) to show for the same amount of time on the scene. Wagner was off the podium 3 times in 6 years while Cohen was never OTP from 2002-2006.
*Not counting 4th place finishes (but even if you did, the stat remains consistent). US Nationals for some reason awards a medal for 4th place as well...
Worlds
Cohen: 5 appearances (2 silver, 1 bronze, 2 OTP)
Wagner: 4 appearances* (all OTP)
This is where Cohen really kicks Wagner's behind - Cohen, even though she never won gold here, has 3 medals - in fact, she was NEVER out of the top 4 in any of her 5 competitions and, in fact, medaled 3 years in a row (2004-2006). Wagner, meanwhile, has no medals to show for her 4 competitions - a 4th, a 5th, a 7th and a 16th(!).
*2015 will be Wagner's 5th appearance at Worlds if she competes. Result pending.
Olympic Games
Cohen: 2 appearances (1 silver, 1 OTP)
Wagner: 1 appearance (OTP)
Cohen wins out on this comparison just having been to 2 Olympics vs. Wagner's 1 (not to mention Wagner had an earlier chance but failed to qualify). Plus, she has a silver and a 4th to trump Wagner's lone 7th. Although Wagner did win a bronze in the team event, that competition did not exist during Cohen's career, so it doesn't really apply in this case.
__________
Make of this what you will!
To me, it shows how far US ladies skating has fallen when the most successful US skater post-2006 doesn't even have a single world or Olympic medal while a skater who was often criticized/given a hard time for her skating in the shadow of Kwan still has 3 world medals, an Olympic silver and a very impressive GP record (including a GPF title). Today's US girls would only have half of that in their overly ambitious dreams...
Very true. Puts a different spin (pun intended) on Sasha's career, where she was often seen as a headcase or not fulfilling her potential when compared to Kwan.
I still think Ashley has a lot to be proud of in her career, and clearly she is not done as she wants to medal at Worlds this year.
It's also a different world out there with COP vs. 6.0. It's no coincidence that US Ladies started to decline once COP was established.
