Ban on Carolina Kostner Over

Update on the Schwazer case (in german): http://www.stol.it/Artikel/Chronik-im-Ueberblick/Lokal/Alex-Schwazer-wieder-verurteilt
He is now banned until the end of April 2016 (his sentence was shortened again, because he was so cooperative) and his goal is to compete in Rio 2016, he wants to show the world that it can be done clean!
Oh, and he said that he's not the one who got Carolina into trouble, because he's only told what happend.
So I guess we'll see this calculating guy in Rio next year! Forca Italia!
Hah so the guy who actually doped got shorter sentence thanks to throwing his ex under the bus.

Not shorter, when I remember correctly he got 3,5 years in 2012 (normal sentence: 4 years) for the actual doping and now he was sentenced to 0,5 years (normal sentence: 1 year) because he bought and owned performance enhancing drugs. So 4 years all in all instead of 5 years. Makes a huge difference when you want to compete in Rio ...
I still hope against all odds that the CONI won't let him compete.

I understand Carolina's culpability for lying, but the notion of banning her for someone else's doping is odd to me. None of this relates to her own performance. All of her athletic accomplishments are completely clean.

Okay, the point is setting a very strict ethical standard for others by making an example of her, conveniently after Sochi.

It reminds me of Martha Stewart getting sent to jail in the US for insider trading, when scores of male executives were guilty of worse offenses. I do find it sexist.

Well, she wasn´t banned for his dopping, she was banned for the lie.

He got lenient sentence thanks for being cooperative aka throwing his ex under the bus. what a man he is.

She could have chosen not lie. Even if she'd lied in the first instance, she could have chosen to admit her fault to the investigators, rather than perpetuate a lie. There are half a dozen paths she could have chosen which would not have led to a suspension or at the least a much, much reduced sentence.

1) I said nothing about whether I think she deserves the sentence or not.
2) I was talking about the guy who actually doped and got lenient sentence for being "cooperative" which was throwing his once lover towards CONI.

I guess no one would want a boyfriend like him. And the utter irony is that he might even be allowed compete at the next Olympic with his current sentence.

Strangely, Martha Stewart did not go to jail for insider trading, but rather for "obstructing a federal investtigation by making false statements" about insider trading.

When caught instead of making things worse for himself by lying he was honest.

His version of honest: Yeah, I totally got that ***** to lie for me! Now let me compete again! I _promise_ I'll be clean! (quickly hides needle behind his back)

Thank you Mafke. This really made my day when I read it over the weekend!

I have to admit, although I have been reading this thread, I have been avoiding posting in it as I had got fed up with the way it was going round in circles with the same people making the same arguments.

But I was just on Facebook and spotted a few people linking to the following story, and I had to share it:

Caro isn't the only one appealing the sentence. CONI have announced that they are appealing as well... trying to get it lengthened!!!!  :jaw:

I don't know what to say. The world's gone mad. :disapp:

Wasn't this one thing that was said whenever it was discussed that she was going to appeal the sentence that it could backfire on her and get her a stronger sentence.

But that's always the case when you appeal, everyone should know that, so why mention it?
So from CONI this sounds like a threat to me. I get it. They want this finished now. They have shown that they're really doing something against doping in Italy and Schwazer can compete in Rio. :bang:

Yes, because she actually got extremely lucky in the first place to get such a short sentence; there was a new legislation only just brought in, as I understand it, and they could have chosen not to apply it. Perhaps they're warning her to keep her head down and stop being a fool.

To be frank, this (and other) anti-doping crusades seem more like a mafia operation than anything related to fair play.

Yeah. She got a lucky break. As much as i love Carolina- the skater, i am convinced that Carolina- the person, knew something was up with her ex.
Lying to a sports authority is a big no no- no matter what. That really couldve lead her to a very long ban.

Whether or not her appeal is foolish should be up to CAS to decide.

It reads to me like CONI is trying to lean on Kostner to drop her appeal. "Do as we say and play the good little penitent, or else". That they're suddenly so eager to be lenient with Schwazer - remember him, the actual doper who cheated and lied? - shows that what matters is whether you play the game, not the offense or degree of culpability.

As others have noted, this seems to have very little to do with fair play.
