Joshua Farris

Wow, how did this turn into a stalker thread?

Anyway, nice to see the article in Bleep magazine, so thanks for posting. Looks like the PR efforts for Josh is starting already to broaden his appeal beyond the FS audience. I wonder if he really would start a dual career as a recording artist? Teenage girls (and their mums) would eat it up with a spoon, lol.

By the objects of our affection being attractive and likeable!

As golden411 said, one of the downsides of social media. But in reality, there have always been stalkers in all sorts of random areas of life. One of the first female astronauts had a stalker for instance, a fellow astronaut wrote in his biography about getting a panicked call from her because he manged to find where she lived. And that was long before social media - working for an organization that should have some clue how to deal with publicity. So really social media is just changing it and making it more visible. Maybe seeing the behavior will help some young fans click sooner where the line is between fan and inappropriate. Maybe seeing it will help some people see see it as creepy, or maybe it will be like celebrity sex tapes and agents will want them, who the heck knows.

I find it interesting to observe to be honest. How much do you share? When do you share it? Where is the line between marketing yourself and being too available? How do you tell the difference between the weirdos you should humor and the ones that can be dangerous? These are questions that skaters and similar have to deal with and are dealing with as the very nature of social media evolve. No one can know the right answer, because everything is still developing. Frankly where all this goes is endlessly fascinating to me. How do you get fans and keep them, without some turning into stalkers? Where is the line?

At any rate, I do view it as an unfolding media case study that I am watching with interest. I hope that our skaters never have to deal with anything beyond mild annoyances, that bemuse more than scare them. But I also hope they talk a bit about the choices and policies someday in their biographies.

Lot of good food for thought in your post, Stitch.

Agree that the phenomenon of stalking existed long before social media. And could be very malicious.
Agree also that social media has changed how some stalkers think and operate -- in the same way that social media has changed other aspects of modern life, for better and for worse.

For me, the visibility of cyberstalking is one of the reasons that it is creepy. Can't believe how shameless some cyberstalkers are in posting public messages (extreme in pushiness and in number) to the person whom they are stalking.

Anyway, I hope that the skaters err on the side of caution in their online presence (as well as in their physical alertness).
Not blaming Jason at all ... but I hope that he quickly unfollowed that person so at least she could not keep sending him DMs. (Although as mentioned above, I do recognize that cyberstalking also can take the form of a relentless series of public msgs.)

I see this as "turning into a stalker" thread as a good sign of Josh's popularity. And it is an interesting topic for "our" skaters. The Jason thread has taken more twists and turns in its 200 screens, and not always strictly about Jason, but they always come back to the subject. The posts might not always strictly be about Josh, but they will come back to  for Josh.

So this Google Hangout thing... I'm not familiar with it, should you be present online to watch (which probably won't work for me) or you'll be able to watch it later?

The Google+ Hangout will be archived for viewing later.

FYI, the video of the Dec 2013 USFS Google+ Hangout that included Josh (as well as Max, Angela, Agnes):

You can watch it live like some in this thread will do, or you can make like me and watch it later :)

Thank you, golden411. Now that you posted the link I realised I;d seen it back then, I just forgot how it was called)

The time zone is a problem so I'll have to watch it later.

Something else I wanted to say is that it's interesting to compare 2 FS Online articles about Josh: this one from October (I haven't seen it being posted in this thread but I'm pretty sure it was posted somewhere else and most of you saw it) and now the recent one. Good thing both of them were written by Johanna Bear. So, I think, especially when you look at it side by side and you know what happened to Josh since October, it's another example of how he sounds much more confident and pleased with his performances, and eager for new achievements. I'm so happy to see that.

So. . . . Josh just said on the google hangout something about knowing which fan was from Australia. Could that be who i think that is?

I was thinking the same thing!

Anyway, the Google Hangout was super cute. I watched for Josh because I'm not really a pairs fan, but Chris and Alexa were both very charming as well! Josh seemed perhaps a little bashful, but definitely not awkward in front of the camera.

The link to the video of tonight's Google+ Hangout with Josh + Scimeca/Knierim.

ETA, I see now that satine gave the link in the post right before mine. Sorry for the redundancy.

They definitely were karne's questions -- I had seen what she posted on Twitter or FB before the hangout started.

So happy for her that Josh knows who she is ... so he does know that he has fans in Australia :).

I won't make other comments yet so as not to spoil the video for karne and others who could not watch live.

But I thought Josh seemed relaxed and comfortable on camera :).

[I've always thought that Chris Knierim seems like another great guy, and I enjoyed seeing him as well :).]

Oh dear, I didn't think the question was that difficult!

Josh said he watched Yuzu at Jr. Worlds! Maybe we will see some Josh-Yuzu interaction at Worlds this year?? Good luck to both of them.
It was funny that he said 'I hope it doesn't sound creepy.'

Do I have to hand in my Australian card if I admit that I can't snorkel/scubadive?

No ;), but the one and only time I ever went snorkeling was at the GBR. If you can swim (at all -- even with a life preserver), in a few moments you could learn to snorkel well enough to enjoy the underwater eye candy.

Or a ride in a glass-bottomed boat would be just as cool , yes?

And I hope that Josh would have a chance to see a wombat or two on his trip. They're cute.

Anyway, I love Josh's sense of humor . Dry at times, but he is quick to laugh at himself .

Would love to see some Josh-Yuzu interaction. They both competed at 2013 Skate Canada (I remember reading an article saying that Josh will finally have a chance to compete against one of the skaters he looks up to there) and 2014 NHK, but I still have to see photos/videos of them together.
