Jason Brown

Jason was absolutely great here in his FS, especially his 3As. Congrats to him on a great performance and the standing ovation for him was lovely. Japanese audiences are the best!

The edge calls were strange. He hasn't gotten any edge calls since 2012-2013 JGPF . Maybe the TC wanted to have a little throwback. :)

I'm no expert, but it looks like Jason only received one "not clear edge" call, on the Lutz in his FS. There was no deduction and he got a +.60 GOE. (He slightly outscored Mura on their FS stand alone Lutzea, but poor Mura did get an "e" on his Flip!)

He did get -GOE in the SP with the !

Still he hasn't even received a ! at all this season so these three ! at WTT seems sort of random. Maybe the tech panel wanted to balance out the drunk judges.

In all honestly, while I'm delighted that he skate a clean performance, I'm sort of curious how that score will hold up in the future. I absolutely think that 87 TES is doable, especially with some adjustments (and better +GOE -- some of his jumps had much lower +GOE when compared to other comps) but I wonder if he'll stay in that upper 80s range come fall.

89, even with a perfect performance is a huge jump....granted the judges may have been caught in the euphoria of the whole thing...I guess, I won't be surprised if they come back to the mid-80s.

No, actually he got .3 positive GOE on the SP and .6 positive in the free. His only negative GOE was -0.10 on his loop in the free. A bit odd, but whatever.

I am not overly concerned for the ! calls. In some ways this is an example of them being used how intended. He still got positive GOE for them as the judges felt they were fine. The tech controller thought there was some iffiness so he marked it as such rather than making the call himself. I wonder if part of it is that he did not hold the outside edge long enough for this controllers tastes prior to jumping.

So did anyone else find it funny that Evgeni "men need quads" Plushenko announced his comeback right after Jason bested Plushie's PB without a quad

I agree it will be interesting to see if drops back from 89 PCS. His average component score here (just further averaging the 5 marks) is 8.91. An average mark of 8.5 would yield total PCS 85.

The good news, though, is that if he improves his jump GOE by just a couple of points, he can make up some of the difference if PCS does go down. He got a good amount of +GOE here (11.57) but only 4.93 was for his jumps. In contrast, Yuzu got 17.61 points in GOE, with 11.91 of that from jumps. Interestingly, with 1 quad, Yuzu's base value was only 5.34 points higher than Jason's.

According to this tweet from Jason's Japanese Fan Club, he's been invited to the Gala. I hope the Japanese audience enjoys Cotton Eye Joe as much as I do.

Bing translation:
Jason player was invited to the Gala. Seems to have this national competition for fun with a comical touch that you can dance gala program. Gala tomorrow I look forward to. Photo: about receiving gifts by juanmi glad Jason players.

It doesn't surprise me Jason was invited - he was 2nd in the men's, and with the pairs result, it is possible that Team USA will be the winning team - and if I understand correctly, all the winning team members are invited to the gala as individuals, as well as a group. (At least, I seem to recall that happened at WTT2013. I know Max was at the Gala there.)

congratz to him for new PB and 2nd place finish overall :cheer: and today he looked ridiculous in that costume, i loved it

Jason was so adorable in the Kiss and Cry in his flag onesie. I noticed Alexa wore one too. I wonder if she borrowed Gracie's or bought her own.

I see StitchMonkey has posted the ISU total personal best clarification.

Yeah Jason! :cheer:

I realised only just now that his FS was a new US record as well! That's just insane without a q!

So happy for our Jason :)

Just to record it for posterity:

I am happy. :)

But keep I'm mind re: beating Evan... that 1.) BV for certain jumps, like the 3A were lower and 2.) judges were really stingy with pcs. At that event Daisuke Takahashi had the highest PCS and he only got 84+ (and Evan got 82+)

Otoh, the scale of values for jumps were much higher, so a +3 on a 3z was worth more than now and there were two level-based step sequences (vs one w/choreo) .so maybe technically cancels out...

For sure it's the highest among all us men under current rules/judging philosophies.maybe if I had time, I can calculate it and see how the math plays out with Evan.

Eta: Kozuka's FS from Worlds 2011 really has held up all these years, which tells you what a brilliant performance it was...it make me sad he hasn't been anywhere near that number since.

I know! I saw on some of the protocol for the 2010 Olympics that a fall on a quad was over -4 points. And I was like, "YIKES!" Glad they changed it.

Well on the flip side a well executed quad does not get as much GOE as one pre-2010. The quad was really under valued and you had the whammy of a < it going all way to a triple base value. I think the thought was to reward proper execution of the quad....but I think the outrage of Evan winning without a quad and a desire to encourage guys to try the jump they upped the BV and utilized the 70 percent UR base value.

He is only twentieth in all time short programs-that is where a quad could really help.him, if he can rotate and land it.
