Alexander Petrov

Probably not a planned quad (at that point in the program) but a really stupid counting mistake from someone

Did they submit any planned content? If so, we could see what it was meant to be? I'm sure Mishin wouldn't make a mistake like that - so it must have been Sasha improvising. But what was it meant to have been instead? It's an odd mistake to make, however you look at it...

I can't imagine him planning a quad at that point in the program. Even the halfway mark was long past (had it been element 6, it would at least make some sense for the bonus points).

The only thing he could've replaced it with is... a double axel? I can't imagine him accidentally turning a double axel into a triple toe though--they're nothing alike. Maybe he was so panicked after his initial mistakes that he decided to just try a quad to make up ground, and popped it?

Maybe there's some illness spreading through Mishin's students, hence the shaky performances. (Oh, Liza, please nail your LP and prove me wrong...)

Yeah, maybe Sasha himself thought to throw in the quad? Possible...

Another idea could be to compare his test skates/Samara layouts - if they've been switching between various different layouts, it might be that, in the midst of his misery at a nightmare skate, he simply reverted back in confusion to some previous layout.

I think we have the most plausible answer here. And suddenly I feel a little sad.

I just looked back to his layout in samara and you are right, he did do a 3t there so he probably was confused and remembered that layout.

This is only a very small competition, and Sasha is still young enough to have many more opportunities ahead to prove himself. Don't worry too much, adelia. :)

Mishin's thoughts on Sasha's performance at Nice Cup:

""Petrov this year is difficult to come in the form, if in the short program, we were glad of his success, in the free program it has not reached the level that is needed to perform successfully in two ways. But we see that the boy is on the right track. He show itself in this season. I have no doubt, "- said Mishin calls."

The relevant parts of Mishin's interview from the team-russia website:

"-Start in Nice was very helpful - said Alexei Mishin. - In this season of my students behind in the form set by last year's schedule. The reasons to make public discussion is not necessary, but the fact remains. Competitions Nice revealed weaknesses that need to work on before the Grand Prix.

How do you evaluate performance in Nice of Alexander Petrov and Andrei Lazukin?
- How unfortunate. Although, if we talk about Sasha, can be identified and positive moments. The boy is now in the difficult transition to adulthood. From youthful discharge transition into adulthood. He has a great feature: fighting spirit. The beginning of this season happened to Petrov's very unfortunate, but in Nice in the short program, he looked decent. Virtually nothing has been conceded to Aliev. In the free program Petrov is not yet ready to show his potential. We will work, tighten.

Quad Alexander had already mastered?

- We work on this element in training. We plan to include it in the long program."

Alright, Mishin has said that the quad will be in the LP. I'm not sure why he didn't let Sasha try it at Nice then. Or maybe they changed their minds at the last minute? Anyway, this is probably the most Mishin has said about Sasha in an interview for quite some time so I'm pleased that we have some news at least. He also praised Sasha as a fighter, we all knew that but it's nice to hear it from his coach. :)

Obviously Sasha is not ready for it at this point. I am sure the quad will be added to his program at a right time in a right competition, and I fully trust Mishin's wisdom. :)

It would have helped if the LP layout wasn't changed 4 different times in the last 2 months. Just saying.

Well, there may be behind-the-scenes reasons for that that we aren't privy to - perhaps the quad isn't quite stable yet, and they're trying to figure out a good strategy meanwhile? Also, I doubt Mishin takes a Senior B all that seriously in this point in his career - he's probably trying out what is working and what isn't. The main focus now is probably to get him ready for the GP.

Also, did you see that Mishin called Sasha's SP "decent"? - gasp! - what an insult! ;)
