Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I think the entrance into the swan lift looks a lot cleaner. I was impressed with the speed through that lift.

The Frida Kahlo Museum has this incredibly interesting article about Frida's style.
http://museofridakahlo.org.mx/assets/files/page_files/document/133/FILE_2_4.pdf
It talked about how Frida chose the Tehuana style of dress. This society was matriarchal and it was a way for her display "female power" and hide her "imperfections" with the long skirt. Plus, Diego was a fan of the Zapotec culture from where this style of dress originates. She wanted to distract people from looking at her waist down, so she chose to really adorn herself from the waist up.

This article said that Frida's friends said the more pain Frida was suffering the more elaborate her outfits were. http://www.theguardian.com/artandde...-wore-artists-wardrobe-locked-up-for-50-years

I understand their use of black, but maybe she could try a something with a type of Mexican lace/crochet and some colorful embroidery and a version a more form fitting version of the Tehuana dress. For Ruslan, I like the painting idea but not the black material he wore because it looks like practice clothes. From the pictures I have seen of Diego, he has been in suits and even overalls, so it's hard to get an idea of what Ruslan should wear as Diego.

Congrats Elena and Rulsan on your victory!

Congrats to Elena and Ruslan!
But I don't like the costumes... The main color is black, I don't think it fits Frida's inner energy much. And two black programs is a bit much for one couple...
Ruslan' s costume... It reminds me of a caterpillar with a bright spot on its back to frighten off birds and other enemies. The idea itself seems great but it's the only bright spot on his black costume and it draws too much attention. I don't feel like Ruslan's back should be the main part of the overall image...

True, I related with Frida everything except the black color. I wonder if they have problems with money to get a good designer, last season Elena´s friend made her SD dress (that was beautiful) and now her mother and her putting the flowers in the dress.

I don't think they really have money problems, Elena has always been very involved with her costuming, and they have a lot more funding this season than last season anyway.

The sheer difficulty of their twizzles is an interesting strategy. They're one of the best twizzlers in the world, if not THE best, and they're doing the most difficult twizzles in the world right now. On the downside, this does make it harder for them to be consistently in sync. On the other hand, it's not like other teams never struggle with simpler twizzles, and if I/Z can really polish these ones, they'll make all the others occasionally struggling with smaller, slower, easier twizzles look bad. And their GOE will generally go up with time as they establish themselves more. Both P/C and C/B had twizzle issues at worlds and yet both got positive GOE nonetheless. I/Z's twizzle issues are almost always sync rather than bigger mistakes. If they have trouble keeping their twizzles stable, I'm sure they'll make changes, but this could turn out to benefit them in the long run. Even if they do decide they need to change their twizzles, having spent so long doing such difficult ones will make any easier ones a piece of cake.

Congrats to Lena and Ruslan with the first win of the season! :cheer: Pity for those twizzles, but I love their speed and energy! This spot on Ruslan's back looks distracting, though...

Is there a video link to the press conference? When will be the awards ceremony?

The awards ceremony is today, Sunday, at 17.30, local time.

As for a video from the press conference, I'd also love to see one. And a video from the K&C after the FD, please.

Some photos from the press conference, from their VK group:

Yes I highly doubt that they have money issues with the costumes, I think Elena just really likes fashion design. As part of the A team, basically everything related to their skating itself is covered is covered financially by the federation. The costumes are included in this to the best of my understanding, as would changes to the costumes the skaters or coaches want to make (within reason I suppose- the federation might not pay for a new costume for every single competition but they would definitely pay for one change, maybe more if the skater felt it truly necessary for some reason).

This is a REALLY GOOD interview, thank you so much for posting it! I think it is really a must-read... she talks REALLY highly of Ruslan, explains why she wanted to do Frida and how it was her idea, talks about the media and how they are somewhat disingenuous at times, addresses Nikita briefly...

She really sounds in a very positive frame of mind and happy with their programs, RUslan, her coaches, and her life. Thank you agian for posting.

If they are really determined to skate in black to Frida, I would just suggest to change the colors of the flowers on Elena`s dress to red and orange to match the colors on Ruslan`s shirt. Maybe they could also change Ruslan`s shirt. I would suggest a fabric similar to Cizeron`s shirt he had last year. I have to say though that Elena`s hair was 100% on point for Frida.

I also enjoyed the interview very much (despite the google translate). She seems to be really fond of Ruslan, you also see it in the way she looks at him during the press conference. She's not bitter about the past and embraces life. And her devotion and vision as an artist is truly admirable.

My favourite part is when Simonenko talks about how some journalists still accidentally write Ilinykh/Katsalapov, and her response is just "it's not really an accident, you bunch of s***-stirrers". You tell him, girl!

 She really called the journalists out on what they are doing. I loved how complimentary she was towards Ruslan and their coaches. It`s great to see her so happy.

This girl is a gem, very intelligent, brave and sincere.
