This is the worst terrorist attack in France ever. They have declared a countrywide state of emergency for the first time in decades. The whole country will still be in shock & mourning tomorrow. I remember London after the 2005 attacks when the death toll was lower than we have seen today, and still for much of the rest of the week theatre shows & other public gatherings were cancelled or postponed - partly out of respect, partly for security. It would be in very bad taste to carry on with the event just hours after the attack; life must go on, but people also need time to come to terms with what has happened. Just use the SP standings for the final results, there are bigger things to worry about than skating at this time.

Absolutely. I live in Manhattan and had a friend killed in 9/11. If you let fear rule, then the terrorists have won.
I get you shouldn't let fear rule, but the attacks JUST happened, gunmen are still on the loose, no one knows what's what. It is not letting fear rule if everyone stays inside out of safety concerns tomorrow simply because no one knows if it's safe right now.

The day after 9/11, every access point into and out of Manhattan was closed, and remained closed for several days. All air traffic over the city ceased with the exception of helicopter patrols. I still walked close to 7 miles (actually 14 if you count the return trip) to visit a friend who lived near the WTC, because she was a bundle of fear. What I told her was this: yes it is a tragedy and don't go looking for trouble. But a little perspective helps. You have a better chance of slipping and falling in your bathroom and cracking your skull open than you do being killed in a terrorist attack. And if you live in fear, then the terrorists have won. I'm watching CNN- there is a curfew and boarders have been closed-travel restricted. So horrible, praying for Paris<3

I really don't think there's any right or wrong answer in this case. I know this is a cop-out answer, but whatever actions they chose, I hope that it'll work out the best for the safety of the people, whether it's continuing the event with a heightened security or halting it for a few days.

I rather like the idea of a closed-off judges only event. You get the event over with respectfully (you kinda have to let it go on given its role in the GP series and the fact that the skaters are unlikely to be able to leave right away anyway) and you minimize the number of individuals in the arena. Additionally, B. is quite far away from Paris.
These sort of attacks are scary because there's no way to stop them, only to minimize casualties and public panic. Political scientists have been talking about this sort of thing for years, terrorist attacks focusing on civilian casualties using readily available light weaponry that does not require skill or training. If anything, the "sophistication" and scale of 9/11 was an aberration. Conversely, I doubt that this incident will be the only one of its type even in this decade. It's just so easy to carry out and difficult to prevent.
My heart right now is with the victims, their family, and also the immigrants who will undoubtedly be scapegoated by many ignorant individuals over the coming days and months.

Quite honestly, I will respect whatever decision the organizers feel should be made in this situation. It is clearly not a simple problem and there is not a simple or obvious answer.
My thoughts and prayers are with France, its citizens, those within its borders, and those with family there, friends there, or ties to there. I certainly hope the worst is over.
