TEB is Cancelled

I have tickets for CoR next week. Should I be worried? We live under terrorism threat for years now. Just hope that the authorities will find the right balance between security and convenience. Sochi was perfect in that sense. Rammstein concert once in Luzhniki was a nightmare. They had at least 5 security checks with 3 narrow corridors. It took me no less than 90 minutes to get inside.

Cancelling CoR will likely not happen by the Russian authorites. Hope that ISU do not have this in mind. At the same time, a couple of days ago there was a video by ISIS that Russia will soon wash in blood. Then, anything can happen. Scary...

I am disheartened by so many of the posts here.

Over at 130 people have died, and yet people are worried and angry about the Grand Prix Final results?

I love figure skating as much as the next person, but I think those crying "lack of fairness" need to consider perspective. The families of those whose lives were lost don't have the luxury of worrying about whether Patrick Chan "got a fair shake."

This is a lot of self righteousness imo, Sorry.

Yes, but baseball has rules for that. I don't remember a skating event that had to be stopped. I know that after the plane crash in 1961, where the U.S. figure skating team died the World Championships were cancelled. And because there are no rules I guess all national associations have to agree to a solution. This could take a while, but I don't think it's really that important. GP Final is fun and great and we all want our favourite skaters to attend, but it's not as important for them as Europeans, 4CC and Worlds. The easiest solution obviously is to use the result from the SP and they'll probably just do that. I wouldn't expect them to come up with a complicated solution within the next couple of days.

But rules in other sports are instructive of what's considered fair. I'm sure major league baseball tried to come up with a rule that would give credit to the team that had performed well enough to credit them with a win. Halfway through was the conclusion. I think that crediting a win after just the short program (approximately a third of the way through) is not very fair, especially in the current system where the scores carry over. We have seen with some frequency in this system (unlike the 6.0 system) skaters moving up from 6th place or even lower sometimes to the medals. I don't know what the answer is. If the long program could still be held somewhere else, that would be best.

Look, I'm not trying to pick a fight,
i'm just being honest, Why are people here judging each other all day?

I don't know. Perhaps, this is a forum about a sport that judges people?

I guess it rubs me the wrong way when people are being ridiculous xenophobes?

I'm not sure how I feel about this idea. It might encourage some very inflated scores for certain skaters who would be at risk of not making it to GPF at upcoming events. Comparing scores across competitions is dicey.

I agree that this proposal would open up a big can of worms. There is no perfect or completely fair solution. I think letting the SP placements serve as final placements may be the best way to go. The skaters all earned their placements in the short programs. I do feel bad for skaters such as Chan, Tuk, and T/M, who had a good, though not certain, chance of moving up the the FS.

I kinda feel like we managed to keep this debate today mostly (!) Xenophobia free? :confused2:

I did disappear many times though, So dunno...

To show support for France, our favorite skater/illustrator Max Settlage has made a short #PeaceForParis video.

It is similar to the "time-lapsed" videos in his Inktober series showing the process of making Max's black-and-white illustrations.

But in today's video, Max sketches the #PeaceForParis symbol based on the Eiffel Tower -- and adds the colors of the French flag .

I agree. The sp result is the best solution. The skaters had an equal chance to skate well in sp. Nobody can know for 100 % sure, how many places somebody had moved up in the freeskate as the ice is slippery even for top skaters of the world....

To all the posters on here who want the show to go on.....how would you feel if it was your child, parent, spouse or sibling who died in the attacks...your country is in turmoil, police are trying to protect it's citizens and you want them to use resources for safeguard sporting competition the day after such terror and sorrow. The country needs to mourn and get itself back together not worry about a competiton. When 911 happened here in NYC sports events where cancelled. Reading the post on here, I worry about the future of humanity as we snark at each other on here in the aftermath of such horror. Yes I realize this is self righteous but most of you all are acting the same way.

See I'm trying to think it's the most feasible way as well, and then I think how close 2nd-7th place were for pairs, and two GP champs this season not doing so hot. And wish they had the chance to show what they are.

There is an article here on Golden Skate that notes Peter Krick, ISU sports manager will formally offer a proposal that the SP placements will count as final standings, so that the participants will have some sort of chance at the GPF. He states he is sure that the ISU will adopt the proposal.

I love Max's art and I love this! So thankful he's a part of the skating community.

As for all the arguments, I hope we can put our disagreements aside and stand together for those who lost their lives and be thankful that our favorite skaters are safe - even if their chances at making the GPF are slim.

They had that chance in the SP.

They had that chance in the SP.

And I agree with that. But you know, it's just we know that figure skating has two parts: short and free. And combined scores. Which anything can happen.

But you are correct that those who scored high in the short gave it their A-game and the ones who didn't do so hot, didn't really either.

And yes money-wise, physical health-wise, visa-wise, time-wise, it is the most logical one. I agree, but I think a lot of us wish there were other solutions.

I won't complain if that ends up being the decision though.

You're not self righteous, This is your opinion and you're very passionate about it,
Telling people they're abominable for talking about skating here is self righteous imo.

Maybe we could all slightly come down from where we are and finish this insane day with some calm conversation?

Of course Mishin, Gorshkov and Trankov don't want the TEB SP results to stand because that would mean Russian skaters Tuk, Lipnitskaia and Tarasova/Morosov would be out of the GPF for sure. Some of them would prefer to have the GP series and/or the GPF cancelled. Now that is a purely self-serving, throw the baby out with the bath-water attitude! :rolleye:

Gorshkov, as head of the ISU Technical Committee, does have a lot of say in the outcome, and he is one who is against having the SP count as the results for TEB. If TEB is eliminated, then all the skaters who had TEB as their first or second GP event couldn't make the GPF, and that's a whole lot MORE skaters disadvantaged. :noshake:
