Mao Asada

Some quotes about Mao from last interview with Radionova (sorry for my English:p)

Who did you like more after first starts?
- Mao. She looked so beautiful as always! Doesn’t matter that her LP hasn’t turned out a little but she won. I respect her so much!
Surprisingly, but almost all of Russians skaters and their coaches are beginning to respond to this question with admiration of Mao Asada.
- That's right, it is. She is skating so beautiful, jumping a triple axel, especially after her break, it is very difficult. She deserves only a big respect.

Thanks for the post MaoRussianFan. Welcome to the forum. Could you post the original Russian quote?

I have posted this before, but I just found it again. It is a 2 part press conference with Mao just after Worlds 2007 where she gave such a great and inspirational free skate performance. There is a translation in subtitles. She is so adorable here, but there are definitely some inappropriate questions.

Brief comments by Mao after winning the Grand Prix Final in 2008 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4FzArV3ovE

Here is a really good interview from July with Russian subtitles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiH8pfU51Bk

I'm not sure about the validity of this source but it has some interesting things to say:

http://www.jprime.jp/entertainment/sport_player/21101

It says that:

- During the time that Mao was taking a year out, she had her triple axel form analyzed 'scientifically' at Chukyo University (which has a very famous sports department) and made modifications to her jump technique with the advice she got, which has enabled her to finally reach her ideal jump form and has increased her success rate.
- Mao has incorporated core muscle training to her regimen and now has noticably more chest muscle and muscle between her shoulder blades.
- While Mao used to eat barbequed beef, she has changed her diet to mostly eating chicken and vegetables.

Can't wait to see Mao again this weekend!!

I hope Mao gives a good performance come this championship (but not TOO good so she can save it for the Final). And I'm off work for the holiday so I'll be able to enjoy the event fully! :yahoo:

Thanks to rosewood for posting this translated article by Midori Ito about Mao. I think Midori is one of the reasons that Mao came back because Midori was her childhood hero, Midori encouraged Mao to come back when they had an interview together and Midori also made a comeback. Here are her comments about Mao:

One and only presence technically and artistically
Her 3A is reaching the high quality finished form. Her ideal timing and rhythm are sinking into her body. Besides, whether she executes the jump successfully or not, she can cool down and analyze the jump. It makes her capable of going back on the right track even if she made mistakes. That helps her a lot in competitions.

The reworking on skating skills and jump techniques under Coach Sato since the Vancouver Olympics is paying off. The underrotated 3-3 will be completed by continuing to do it in competitions.

Her skating has a matured taste which only a 25 yo skater can have. I really feel that she is a one and only skater. She delivers what only she can do technically and artistically. I think she is mastering her own ultimate skating. It was her comeback GP event. She won it under tremendous pressure while the whole world was watching her. After all, she proved she is extremely talented. Although she made mistakes in the long program, she displayed that she still possesses abilities to win Worlds again.

The one year break didn't have a negative effect on her, instead it was a good rest that had a positive result. She showed good skates at her very first competition. Also she found out the things to work on which is helpful to prepare for upcoming competitions. I'm expecting a magnificent skate at the end of this season. This competition gave me a big expectation.

First to skate after warmup again! So lucky :hap85:

Did the article say she successfully landed 3 3As and fell on one? or just messed up the landing on one

Most reports I've read so far mentioned 3 successful ones out of 4 tries, but no detail about if she fell or popped or anything happened to the unsuccessful one.
And re. Mao's 3A status at the moment, I think I'll come to believe Coach Sato's words from an interview done earlier during the summer time: 'There's almost no fall from Asada's 3A jumps now.' It's even far more interesting (at least for me) now to see if she can carry out a better outside edge for the Lz.
