2015-16 State of Russian Ladies skating

:hijacked: Right there with you on the tights over skates thing, Lester. I know it's nitpicking but it really ruins the costume for me. But, I love that Adelina, Yulia and Elena stopped with that - looks much more refined IMO. Liza never did that if I'm not mistaken. I do hope Evgenia will join this trend, too. I love her costumes but the way she puts the tights over the skates - sort of half way, with the tip showing - it's just meh. But again, that's probably the lowest form of nitpicking imaginable, so I'll show myself out.

Liza did it in 2011, but she did full over the boots.

It's disgusting. Especially when it comes from people who think they have the last word in what constitutes "lovely" skating...their attitude is anything but.

I know I'm annoyed with it also. Anna's had some bad performances this season but she's also had some great ones, her most recent competition was at Nationals where she was great, she earned her spot to Euros and that should be all that matters. The people saying she'll definitely bomb like it's a done deal are not very supportive. I personally hope she can use the momentum from Nationals to deliver a great performance at Euros. Based on the form we saw from her at Nationals, I think she has a great chance to earn a medal and post a great score at Euros.

I wish Anna much success at Euros but I kinda wish she stopped that tights over the boots thing :(

She wears tan skates so I think that might be why she wears the tights?

I don't know if Anna comes across to me as suffering from nerves especially - I mean more than most are subjected to. I think rather that she tends to unravel if she has a fall - and with the kind of falls she tends to have, it isn't surprising; they must really rattle her! Which is why it seems she tends to skate either really well - or quite badly. She does look as if she has hurt herself, and one can't help but be really worried about her, when hose falls happen. Sometimes it looks as if she almost hit her head in the ice!

I wish there were something that could be done about that. Can falling be taught, so to speak?

It's a matter of opinion, personally I'd rather watch Anna than Yulia anytime.

As different as they are they're both my favorite Russian skaters, I like watching them. Since wishing Anna gold against Evgenia is kinda unrealistic, I wish her fabulous skate at Euros and a podium place so that she can make the Worlds team. Personaaly, I much prefer Anna than Tuk, so I'd be only too happy to see Anna at Worlds stage.

I don't even remember she had tights over boots. Maybe its me who don't care the boots over tights or tights over boots thing. Jumping quality is much more important.

I wish Anna much success at Euros but I kinda wish she stopped that tights over the boots thing :(

There are some new proposals to have Russia also compete at 4CC. Technically the country is eligible geographically. That more talented Russian skaters can make it out of country, particularly those who are not based in European part of the country as well as allow for regional figure skating growth.

That would unfair to the 4CC participants (who use their placement at 4CC to build their ranking). Russia (while geographically transcontinental) is part of Europe for all intents and purposes - certainly in the eyes of figure skating.

Greenland (Denmark) is part of the North American continent and yet Danish skaters shouldn't be allowed to compete at 4CC.

Kazakhstan is, like Russia, transcontinental but Denis Ten isn't allowed to compete at Europeans along with 4CC.

And how many skaters are actually from what you would consider the "Asian" part of Russia? Technically/geographically, part of Canada (St. Pierre and Miquelon) belongs to and is governed by France - and it would be unfair to send Canadian skaters (none of whom hail from St. Pierre and Miquelon) to Europeans accordingly. :sarcasm:

And what next? Sending Russian skaters to compete in the Asian Games?

I can see why they're considering it (and it's good for more of the Russian field to get experience) but this is a bad idea that deliberately favours Russia and their current state of skating. Nobody brought up this transcontinental conversation a decade ago, but now it's being brought up because, inconveniently, the field is suddenly stacked.

Technically, most of Russia is in Asia, and as a russian from Siberia myself, i strongly disagree that Russia is part of Europe for all intents and purposes.
So yeah, what is wrong to send asian people who live in asia to compete at asian games?

As for not bringing it... Well, i'd totally support that any time ot even because of the stacked field. But because, unlike Denmark (how many people live in Greenland again?) and Kazakhstan (how many square kilometers of it are in europe?) Russia is truly located on two continents. There are MANY people who live in european part, but also many people who live in the asian part. Its not something small and discrete, its half of the country.

While Russia's land territory is largely in Asia, roughly 22% percent of the population lives in the territory located in Asia, with the remaining population living in Europe, which, I guess, is why Russia tends to be considered a European country by many people. Russia is transcontinental, but the ISU shouldn't be giving Russian skaters advantages over other skaters by allowing them access to 4CC and Europeans since both of those competitions count towards World rankings. I am a huge fan of several of the Russian skaters, but competition needs to be fair to all. If the ISU decides to allow Russia to participate in both of these competitions, they should not allow it in the same year. They should alternate it where Russia, or any other transcontinental country, can send skaters to 4CC one year and to Europeans the following year, but never to field a team in both competitions each year. That way it is at least not being bias in favor of Russia. Better yet, they should leave it alone.

How would that work? Have 2 national championships - 1 for skaters in the Asian part of Russia and 1 for skaters from the European part of Russia?

:agree: I lived most of my life in Siberia too!

Sugarpova, I like reading your comments but really don't get this part. Who exactly is sick of that? Last I checked, Elena, Evgenia and Anna (to a lesser extend, sadly) get probably the biggest amount of love in here, so could you please elaborate on who is sick of them winning? (apart from trolls, and you know what they say: never feed the trolls!)

By some of the mental hoops one had to run through in order to support giving Russia extra international event spots, it also sounds as though skaters from Quebec should get to compete at Europeans.

Luckily the organization of events works fine as it is, where all countries have an opportunity to send skaters to EITHER 4CCs OR Europeans to make the division of events the fairest it can be. (Though if anything, it kind of sucks for non-European skaters simply because Europeans has much more prestige than 4CCs.) If Russia would like to stop sending skaters to Euros, however, to have them compete in 4CCs instead, I wouldn't have a problem with that as it would still be fair.

I forget... maybe it was mentioned earlier in the thread? but if so I'm blanking on it at the moment, I'm sorry to say - is there an actual serious proposal about this? Or are we just killing time before Euros? Just curious...

Also, maybe a separate thread would be appropriate? As, whilst this no doubt arose from the abundance of Russian ladies, this isn't specifically about the Russian ladies... Just a suggestion. If not, pray carry on.

I think we are just killing time before USA nationals =)
